[] Essays (Include Subjects):
[li] Common App Main: I don’t think I can rate these fairly haha…I thought this was okay, I wrote about Harry Potter and how the books have shaped me[/li][
] EC Short Answer: I don’t remember this one? maybe that’s why i got waitlisted haha
[] Extended essay(which topic): I did the odd numbers one…compared the “plight” of odd numbers to feminism, kind of rambly and disorganized
[
] Optional Essay: I wrote about different books, movies, YouTube channels, and TV shows that I like
[] Why Chicago: I used a passage from Gone With the Wind, which was maybe a little dramatic…I wrote why I liked the core curriculum, the scav, the environment…pretty standard
[
] Other:[/ul][] Teacher Recommendation #1: from my junior year English teacher, probably good, she likes me and writes good recommendations
[
] Teacher Recommendation #2: from my statistics teacher and also my sophomore calc teacher had some input…should’ve been good
[] Counselor Rec: good, she knows me very well
[

[
] Weaknesses: activities were too typical, probably essays for this school
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I’m not sure, I thought I’d be rejected after being deferred. Might come down to the fact that I wouldn’t fit very well there…hmm
[
] What would you have done differently?: I would’ve edited my essays more. They could’ve been shorter and more focused. I also found a typo in the optional one, yikes. [/ul]Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: I was deferred from EA, now waitlisted…I guess they really don’t know what to make of me haha. Congrats to all those accepted!

Waitlisted
OOS
3.5 uw / 4.4w
2150 SAT

Posting for my D:

Waitlisted, after EA deferral
3.86uw/4.53w
34 ACT

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2200 superscore (highest sitting was 2130, highest CR 800, highest M 670)
[
] SAT II: didn’t send
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): school doesn’t do GPA (I’m from the UK)
[
] Weighted GPA:
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): school doesn’t rank
[
] Senior Year Course Load: 3 A Levels - Spanish, History, English Lit predicted 3 As
[
] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): None really! a few MINOR national comps based on the school system im in (for other girls schools) [/ul] Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): Short film company, won 2 national awards, some acting stuff, internship in spain were my main ones. Also stuff like debate club, etc
[
] Job/Work Experience: Kumon!!
[] Volunteer/Community service: Tutored in a local Deaf community club[/ul] Writing (Write a brief description and Rate Quality on 1-10 Scale; 10 as Best):[ul]
[
] Essays (Include Subjects):
[] Common App Main: On internship in Spain (the growing up prompt). TBH it’s hard for me to judge how good any of these were - I don’t know anyone else applying to the US, and the essays are sooo different to UK ones. PM and I’d send any of them though, if you’re interested
[
] EC Short Answer: I don’t remember doing this?
[] Extended essay(which topic): The language one ! Quite general, incorporated some stuff about my Welsh heritage (I used a saying rather than a word)
[
] Optional Essay: This was my fave!! On all my favourite books that I keep on a specific shelf
[] Why Chicago: Kind of bland tbh (and I’m not just saying that)
[
] Other:[/ul][] Teacher+Counselor Recommendations: Didn’t see any of these! I assume they were good because my teachers all like me and they didn’t have to write any other of these types of recs (we have shorter ones in the UK). Alternately, they could have been kind of bad, because they had no idea what they were doing.

[
] Interview: Lovely! My shortest interview but it was nice
[] Art Supplement: Didn’t submit one! Ironic because most of my ECs were arts-y but I got really worried it wasn’t good enough and would damage any chance I had
[ b]Other**[ul]
[
] Date Submitted App: Whatever was the deadline
[] State (if domestic applicant):
[
] Country (if international applicant): UK (England) but I’m a US citizen so that may have helped in some way
[] School Type: Private, small, girls
[
] Ethnicity: Latina (half mexican, half english)
[] Gender: female
[
] Income Bracket: umm approx $105,000
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM I guess? [/ul]
Reflection[ul]
[
] Strengths: My ECs
[] Weaknesses: I genuinely thought nothing would really make me “shine” if that makes sense? My scores were pretty average, below average I’d say for admits
[
] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted in the UK to Cambridge, Durham, Edinburgh, Exeter, and Bristol . This is my first American decision!!
[li] What would you have done differently?: Revised more math stuff :’) [/ul]
Other Factors:[/li]General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: I’m literally in shock come back to me in a weke and I might have something eloquent to say

[] Strengths: First gen, salutatorian, lots of leadership, no other apps from my school
[
] Weaknesses: Testing, lack of awards maybe??
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I didn’t really show any interest at all, and I think they track that.
[
] What would you have done differently?: Shown interest.[/ul]
Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: I am really agitated about this, as I knew I would be, because it makes me feel like all of my other reaches are going to reject me and I’ll end up at UT (not a bad thing but it’s def not my top choice). I keep telling myself not to feel like this, but I think I know it’s just a passing thing; every school takes different kinds of people, and I guess I just wasn’t what they were looking for. I’m glad someone else got the spot, because they could have been dying to go here. Congrats to everyone who got in!

[
] EC Short Answer: What is this
[] Extended essay(which topic): French language, talked about music as a language, yeah - but didn’t really include any discussion of my extracurriculars, which I probably should have done (7/10)
[
] Optional Essay:
[] Why Chicago: Talked about the work of composers that I admire that teach there, more or less - included some unconvincing BS about the school itself, but it was mostly about the teachers (6/10)
[
] Other:[/ul][] Teacher Recommendation #1: APUSH teacher, she writes great letters and we know each other well (9/10)
[
] Teacher Recommendation #2: My English teacher, we’re great friends and I’m sure it was a good rec (8/10)

[
] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Unusual major (composition)[/ul] Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Very good as a composer, pretty good stats, passion
[
] Weaknesses: Generally weak EC’s
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Definitely could’ve done more to play up my EC’s in my essays - and more than anything, I think the stars just didn’t align for UChicago this time around. It really does take luck to get into these schools, and for this particular university, I didn’t have it.
[
] What would you have done differently?: Probably would’ve talked more about my EC’s, and if I really cared, then I would’ve visited, contacted faculty members, contacted alumni, and played the whole game properly.[/ul]
Other Factors: Meh
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: I already got a likely letter from my first choice (Columbia), so I’ll be taking myself off the waitlist. Of course, congratulations to all those who were accepted and my condolences to everyone who was rejected / waitlisted - everyone is going to survive, and everyone is going to be happy with where they go to college. Everything is gonna be all right.

Will post momentarily on this comment…

[ b]General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc:**
TO ANYONE reading this who feels so hopeless when they read through these threads… you’re not hopeless. I’ll be honest, I’m not really involved in school. I don’t really do clubs or any organized activities, but it’s not because I don’t care: I do what I’m passionate about. I love learning Russian and writing to penpals online; I love making music; I love writing. Be authentic. Don’t be another drone, and I hope you see great results. I did.
I also got a LL from Cornell and a Vision invite from Rice.

Waitlisted :disappointed:

Double legacy, founder and/or president of two organizations I am extremely passionate about and some other fairly strong ECs/national awards, more proud of the 3 essays I sent them than any other essays I’ve written, 2350+ SAT and 800s on two subject tests. (To preserve my privacy, I won’t be providing any other details.)

Judging by the mixture of decisions/likely letters I’ve received thus far, my application is much more polarizing than I thought lmao.

Anyway, not sure what else I could have done; I was so excited too lol.

Ah well, congratulations to those accepted!

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: I initially applied EA and didn’t think I had any chance. I was basically forced by my dad to apply because he thought I could get in and I didn’t. Looks like he was right. So don’t get down on yourselves if you don’t believe you have a chance. Congrats to all who got in and best of luck to those who didn’t.

[
] EC Short Answer: I forget
[] Extended essay(which topic): hands down THE best essay I have ever written. 10/10. What’s so odd about odd numbers? Used number theory (“weird” numbers), multiple mathematical jokes, and a John Lennon reference. I got inspired and wrote it in 20 mins while visiting uchicago.
[
] Optional Essay: I can’t really rate my own taste haha, but there was a lot of Tennessee Williams on it.
[] Why Chicago: 7/10 decent. I wrote about how UChicago’s own embraced quirkiness made it the perfect place for my idiosyncrasies.

Congratz to the people who got in!
