[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Numbers, some of my essays
[] Weaknesses: Not much in the way of EC’s (by CC standards), a couple of my essays
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: The good essays outweighed the mediocre ones
[/ul]General Comments: Wow, after getting deferred I really did not think I was going to be accepted. I still sent in my answer to the optional Favorite Things essay (which I didn’t do EA) and then updated my regional counselor on a couple of Latin awards I won, in addition to turning in grades. I guess this was enough - I even got a 5k merit scholarship. So if you’re deferred, don’t give up! To others accepted: I might be joining you, might not. It will depend on how my other schools and their scholarships shake out. But I’m very glad I’ve got this opportunity. And to those rejected: this isn’t a judgment of your worth as a human being (as I took it when I got deferred, when MIT rejected me, etc.); it’s a judgment of an application you submitted to the committee. The application isn’t you. You can succeed outside of UChicago. Good luck!

Note: in my state, this score translates to a 99.3, which puts me in the top 0.7% of graduating Year 12 students. I forgot to tell Chicago about this statistic.
[] Senior Year Course Load: As above.
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): None really - a few awards bits and bobs all over the place, like writing competitions, science essay competitions, etc. I was on a very generous scholarship at my high school.

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership and number of years participated in a certain activity in parenthesis): Debating (4 years, school debating captain, coach, won regional competition one year, runner-up the next).
Public speaking: won several regional competitions, often a state finalist.
Choral - dedicated to choir for all of high school, conducted and arranged music for house choral competition (When You Say Nothing at All - we won!).
[] Job/Work Experience: 3 years at a bookshop, about 3 months in a fruit shop. Internship with a cosmetics company in 10th grade.
[] Volunteer/Community service: Youth Ambassador for local charity which supports education in underpriviledged children, Friendly Visitor for socially isolated resident in an aged care facility.
[] EC short answer (subject and personal opinions on it): Work in the bookshop - a bit cutesy to be honest.
[] Common App Essay (subject and personal opinions on it): About “friendly competition” with one of my friends - she was also fiercely academic, involved in debate, etc. It was light.
[] Optional Favorite Things Essay (subject and personal opinions on it): Quite messy - just about different things I liked, movies, singers, artworks, etc. I did not take it too seriously.
[] Why Chicago (details in the essay and personal opinions on it): I quite liked it - again - lighthearted. It was about how I heard about the university, what I wanted to do with my education, and why I liked the city (I visited when I was 12).
[] Extended Chicago Essay (subject - if you want, include essay prompt if you did #5 - and personal opinions on it): Number 5 - the exact prompt was “Describe an everyday moment a moment that to any other person would seem boring or uneventful. Bring the moment to life.” I wrote about driving practice with my grandpa, and about a philosophical argument we once had.
[] Teacher Recommendation (only if you saw it): Didn’t see it. From History and Physics teachers.
[] Counselor Rec (only if you saw it): Didn’t see it.
[] Additional Rec (only if you saw it): From bookshop owner, didn’t see it.
[] Interview: Quite strange - over skype - we chatted about different things. I think my favourite part was when the interviewer told me that kids at UChicago can be a bit fierce in arguments and pull out whiteboards and everything. I told him that my boyfriend and his friends were very similar to the guys off The Big Bang Theory, and at times I feel like Penny from across the corridor.

[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Luck?[/li][/ul]General Comments: I actually had a spazz attack when I read my letter and didn’t even finish reading it before almost falling down the stairs. [li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: 42%^[/li][/ul]General Comments: Well, everyone, I think we all got very unlucky this year. Chicago obviously wanted to be more selective and I think they have met their goal.I think the planning for this was not great considering the EA acceptances. This is the first year they have had an applicant pool of this size, so we can expect that the transition to higher standards could be a little shaky. I obviously did not have the best stats, but I think I would have been in last year, and so would everyone else. The only thing we can do is hope for the best and make sure we know that this is in no way indicative of HYPSM admissions. UChicago is a strange school and they look for different things. I know it can be very discouraging because a lot of us were expecting to get in, but no one could have anticipated such an increase. Congratulations to those who were admitted and good luck next year!
