Official University of Chicago RD Decisions Thread - Class of 2014

@maxxwell. ahahahah thanks. that really made me laugh :D

And you wonder why UC rejected your application. Your negativity shone through loud and clear.

@madhukar so your saying the reason why your “black” friend was accepted to UC is solely because of her ethnicity. WOW

Decision: Accepted

Objective:

SAT I (breakdown): 800 CR/640 M/680 W

ACT: 31

Extracurriculars: Varsity Swim Team (Captain), Literary &Art Magazine (Editor-in-Chief), School Newspaper (Features Editor), Theater (Costume Manager).

Job/Work Experience: House Page in WA D.C.; Nanny this summer

Volunteer/Community service: Mostly local homeless-relief organizations, plus I volunteer as counselor at a natural science camp for underprivileged 6th graders.

Essays: One started with the line “The beast’s nostrils twitched with uncontrolled bloodlust” and utilized the mortifying way I was caught on a kitchen chair, crying and convinced I was going to die, by my demonic new foster baby bunny and segued into an examination of my daily life and what led to me to react that way. Another pondered the meaning of life in relation to my personal education goals, without (hopefully) sounding so psuedo-philosophical.

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes

Intended Major: International Relations/Tajik (Foreign Language)

State (if domestic applicant): WA

Country (if international applicant):

School Type: Private Jesuit

Weaknesses: Grades for sure.

Why you think you were accepted/rejected: My essays. Plus, my interview went spendidly.

General Comments: I’m absolutely stunned to learn I was accepted. For all of you who were waistlisted, there is still hope because, although I’ve desperately considered all possiblities, there is no way I can afford University of Chicago and still go on to grad school. Good luck!

Waitlisted

Quick Stats:
4.2 gpa (top 5%)
2080 SAT
Really good ECs (don’t really feel like specifying right now)
I’m hoping that I got waitlisted just because of my essays, which I don’t think were as good as the ones I wrote for the other schools I applied to (or at least I’m hoping that’s the case)…

I was accepted :). However, financial aid was not that great, so I will probably not attend. +1 spot for wait listers.

[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): URM
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: GPA
[] Weaknesses: SAT
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Even though my SAT scores suck, I think I was accepted because I am the first black-male valedictorian at a very white suburban public high school (I don’t think we’ve ever had a student go to UChicago).[/li][/ul]General Comments: I still don’t know if I’m going, waiting for 5 other decisions and I got into Cornell and UF. At this point it’s about the Fin Aid because I basically have a full ride to UF an my dad won’t let me leave FL if I have $100,000+ in student loans.

raganar, out of 5 kids who applied from my school, 2/2 IB candidates got rejected and 2/3 non-IB kids got accepted (including me). IB is not the end all and be all. It’s about how you challenged yourself.

@kitkatkatie: of course it isn’t the end all, be all.

Question though: what grades did the candidates achieve/were predicted? & You can’t rely solely on your grades to get you in, but it does help. :)

@jeankara, relaxxxx buddy.
thats not what i said. or meant to say at least. there might be another reason but i don’t see it. we have virtually the same GPA/courseload/grades. my scores were couple of hundred points higher than hers but her writing is significantly better than mine. that being said, my uchicago essays were some of the best i’ve ever written and according to the numerous people who read them, they were extremely well written. so now that you know all that, i was TRYING to say that her and i were practically the same applicant coming from the same school and are both on the lower end of the financial spectrum, therefore i cannot think of any other reason she got in over me besides affirmative action. i mean no disrespect to her; shes a good friend of mine and im happy for her because shes smart and a hard worker from what i know.

If she’s a better writer than you, there’s a good chance she also wrote the essay of her life. That alone, given the importance U of C places on its application essays, would have given her an edge over you. Perhaps she had a few other things, like ECs, a sense of perspective, leadership, and life experiences that U of C felt would better round out its class.

Just saying.

Decision: Waitlisted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2200 - Math 740, 730 CR, 730 Writing
[] ACT: 32 composite, didn’t send an official report
[] SAT II (if submitted): 780 US History, 720 Latin
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[] Grades in AP/IB/honors classes (if applicable): All A’s
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 2/242 or so, last year it was 2/450 (school rezoned)
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): APUSH (5), Latin:Vergil (3), Chem (3), Human Geo (4), Calc AB (4)
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Bio, AP US Govt, AP Lit, Latin IV, stats
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Finalist, some random JCL things
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership and number of years participated in a certain activity in parenthesis):
[] Job/Work Experience: waitress/cashier (Mar 08-Feb 09)
[] Volunteer/Community service: ~165 hours
[] EC short answer (subject and personal opinions on it): Wrote about how I volunteer every summer at the public library’s summer children’s program
[] Common App Essay (subject and personal opinions on it): Hmm, a bit random; about how I’m still not sure what I’m going to do with my life, but I’m still ambitious
[] Optional Favorite Things Essay (subject and personal opinions on it): Twee little list of things I like.
[] Why Chicago (details in the essay and personal opinions on it): On how I’ve never gotten to go anywhere interesting and how Chicago would’ve helped me with it.
[] Extended Chicago Essay (subject - if you want, include essay prompt if you did #5 - and personal opinions on it): I did the caught prompt, but my essay was a bit disconnected from it. It was stream of consciousness on my search for cookies. I actually thought it was pretty good, but you never can tell with these things.
[] Teacher Recommendation (only if you saw it): Pretty good.
[] Counselor Rec (only if you saw it): n/a
[] Interview: Didn’t get one.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Three Areas of Interest Listed: I don’t remember a spot for this?
[] State (if domestic applicant): TN
[] School Type: Med/large public, very few go to top schools
[] Ethnicity: Half white, half Korean
[] Gender: F
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): My parents didn’t go to college, so first gen I suppose. I didn’t play it up in my app, though.
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Essays, grades (but my school isn’t very strenuous, so grades might not have been a big factor)
[] Weaknesses: ECs are sort of wishy washy and thin.
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Hmm, I don’t know. I guess my ECs weren’t too great, but these things are still a crapshoot, especially given the massive app increase. If the admit rate is around 10-13% as rumored, I feel pretty good to be on the waiting list. Then again, I don’t know how this bodes for my other schools. Wait and see, I guess.[/ul][/li]General Comments: Well, at least I wasn’t outright rejected.

ACCEPTED and very pumped about it!

congrats everyone!! i am super excited for the april visiting days!

is anyone planning to go on the 22-23?

Decision: Accepted

[] Optional Favorite Things Essay (subject and personal opinions on it): Letter to Captain Jack Sparrow (favourite character)
[] Why Chicago (details in the essay and personal opinions on it): Wrote it as though I were a product in an infomercial. I think this one was successful because it showed UChicago what appealed to me about them while stating how I’d contribute to the university.
[] Extended Chicago Essay (subject - if you want, include essay prompt if you did #5 - and personal opinions on it): “How did you get caught?”; I wrote about being “caught in stereotypes about only children” and how I cope with the public’s perception of only children.

[] Country (if international applicant):Canada, but with US citizenship
[] School Type: Private (non-denominational)

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Definitely interview and essays
[] Weaknesses: SATs and I don’t think my marks were amazing either
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I don’t know the reasons, my school counselor said it was probably because they recognized that academically and personality-wise, I fit very well with their school. Although I don’t think of myself as academically strong (screw you math!).
[/ul]**General Comments: ** To those accepted, I look forward to meeting all of you (perhaps at a scavenger hunt?). To the others, I want you to know that you’re all amazing people who I hope to meet some day. Of course, you won’t know if I’m really magic_fantastic, and I won’t know you, but I can imagine that we will all learn at least one thing from each other.
