Official University of Chicago Transfer Fall 2009

Do you guys have any ideas for reserve options just in case your UC transfer won't work? If, so what are your picks and why? One place I have spotted is Reed, as their commitment to learning is phenomenal also, but it isn't as selective.

Welcome back, Rhode, and I hope that you are alright after your hospital scare!

I'm fine just working too hard I guess. I plan to stop stressing myself out and work smarter and honestly have a bit more fun.
Oh yeah I have other schools that I am applying too; here are a few in order of "likability" (is that a word?):
William and Mary
UPenn
UCLA Berkley
John Hopkins
Northwestern
Tufts
George Washington U

I have selected these schools because they offer both of my majors and minor, which as i have said before are not offered at my current school. Also great academics and extracurricular/study abroad opportunities. Obviously UChicago is number 1 on the list, but these are also options

I also agree with you on Reed PatriotUSA unfortunatly my second major is not offered there :(

The students with the most balanced approach get the best results, Rhode! Perhaps this is something you can work on this year. Whenever I get stressed, I find the best quick fix to be meditation; it works wonders.
Likability is indeed a word!
What are your major/minor choices, if you don't mind me asking?

That is an interesting selction; I had many of those myself. I am only just coming to learn of American Universities so thanks for the list. I wonder why William and Mary is your first choice?
It is vital to have other options and not to "externalize happiness" too much by fixating on UC as some breed of panacea. Do your best but be careful of those traps (and overwork)!

Rhode, how did you find your coursework in your Freshman year? Were you able to get a good GPA, even on courses that you had never taken before? I ask because I have to do BioChemistry, though I was a physics student through High School. Getting a competitive GPA might prove to be even more challenging than I thought. I will see what happens but I am open to the possibility of a junior year transfer. I'm interested to hear what qiao thinks!

Hi! I'm back again. So busy working on sat and tons of procedures before coming to US. I plan to start working on essays later after I arrive at school and know more about it.

For courses, I think it will be better to take more strong science courses. I will take calculous, writing, physics and chem in the first semester.

And I have some ideas about other schools to apply, but I haven't decide exactly which schools to apply. I prefer some small universities, because the efficiency of my current school is extremely low due to the huge student body.

You may have spotted this on another UC discussion board (which I recommend perusing, by the way) but just in case, this article may prove invaluable, even hopeful!

That was strange... Just replace the asterisks with "www" and that link will work.

Meditation does indeed help, thank you PatriotUSA. W&M is high on my list b/c it has alot of the amazing qualities that I love about UChicago and it's a wonderful liberal arts school, it also has a fantastic price tag :) . It is the second oldest university in the country, just behind Harvard, and has a well established history of producing fantastic and well rounded scholars. And surprisingly it is public, but very selective. I intend to have a double major and a minor. A double major in anthro and near eastern studies, and a minor in Asian studies spec. south east asia. My second major and the minor are not offered at my current university. I have only attended my current uni. for about a semester now, but i find the coursework to be quite manageable. It is somewhat demanding of quite bit of time, but you an certainly handle it with good time management skills.

You are welcome, Rhode. I know that meditating was invaluable to me during my final exams in Ireland and I have been using it ever since.
WM sounds interesting; I will give it a look. It has been fascinating for me finding the sheer difference between colleges here - in Ireland, we don't have a school "ethos" or mission beyond a factory-like production of degrees. It was almost a shock to me to find that there were places out there that would "fit" me as opposed to merely providing me with a degree.
Those are some very interesting and select courses you have! No wonder you must be discerning in your choices.
Thank you for the advice. I am aware that I am setting my sights high in aiming for transfer-worthy performance in my first year, that I need to "hit the ground running", as it were, so I was keen to find how you dealt with it. I will do my best.

Qiao, I am in a similar situation in many ways to you - college search in particular - so I will try and pool some of what I find.
I hope that you can manage such an intensive science workload!

Just wanted to wish you guys luck. I was accepted as a transfer for Fall '08, and I'm really excited. I thought I was a longshot, but I tried anyhow, and things worked out-- so, don't give up!

That is fantastic news, "oatmealia", congratulations!
I'm curious - you say that you thought that you were a longshot, yet it worked out. What do you think swung it for you and do you have any details or wisdom to share?

Thank you Oatmealia

I have one question. I want to transfer to UC and other schools majoring in Math. Can I change it to double major in Math and Economics after enrolled?

Can anyone help me with that?

Well qiao272002 I don't see why not, but i could be wrong. As far as i know, and this applies to just about every school, the student declares his major junior year (I think) but before that you're free to change, switch, drop, or add a major to your hearts content. Being a transfer student would not affect that in any way. Hope my info is right, maybe someone who is more knowledgeable can offer better advice.

Thank you Rhode. I checked some policies regarding double-major from UC you're right about that. I figure it out. To add a major is much easirer than I thought

Glad I could help qiao

Fall is approaching quickly; anyone have any questions about your upcoming class schedule?

BTW the common transfer App is now available for online completion, but the UChicago supplement is not yet available. I am already starting mine so that everything will be set come march :)

Just got the email, the supplement and application are now available on the common app website. :)
