@DSNJ2016 Thanks! S is really interested in UMD but ideally wants UIUC, so are counting down the days. Not sure if he’d go with UMD instead of Purdue, although he is leaning that way, depending on a couple of other apps and more importantly, if he can get any merit aid anywhere.

in state, accepted to honors college
major: env science and tech, undecided concentration

1570/1600 sat, 790 and 800 on sat ii’s (not related to major)
3.9 UW, 4.6 W
pretty typical ec’s

Accepted: College Park Fall 2016, FIRE Program

Materials Science and Engineering

Objective:
1280/1600 - 640 math, 640 reading

Had very strong essays about startup business and my own product development/website. (solving problem prompt)

Lots of EC’s with Leadersip - VP Rotary Club, Captain Lacrosse, NHS, SNHS, SHS, Science Olympiad, FBLA Etc.

OOS - GPA 3.8/4.0

I think my Essay was very influential on my decision, I did not know that UMD actually does holistic app reviews and this ultimately led to my acceptance. I never visited and didnt think Id be accepted but was pleasantly surprised. The FIRE program sounds awesome and especially some of the science based research streams. Ill be visiting and strongly considering UMD. Congrats to everyone who got in!

General comments:
I originally had applied for Clark School of Engineering, but then I thought/realized it was a reach for me. I considered changing my major to Computer Science, then decided to wait it out. But I started reading up on rankings/courses on both schools, and I noticed that Computer Science was higher in rankings. (15th in the nation, 28th in the world, according to USWN). Furthermore, I looked at the CS courses I would have to take, and they appealed to me more. Also, my experiences from my internship led me to lean towards a more programming-centric major. After a while of debating, I ended up emailing the admissions officers to request a change in major. UMD is one of my top choices due to the really strong CS program, and all the opportunities I will have coming here.

I honestly did not know decisions would come on 1/29. From the website, I assumed they would come on February 1st. The only reason I found out is because I checked my email during class, and UMD had send an email saying that my decision was up.

Also, I’m a little disappointed I didn’t get into honors or scholars, but I guess they just got more competitive this year.

Daughter got accepted.

General Comments:I had the housing glitch!
I loved Maryland and getting into the Scholars program was an awesome surprise so this is definitely at the top of my list!

My DD was admitted. OOS, 33 ACT (34 superscore) 4.0 unweighted/4.2 weighted, tons of APs, 2 year co-captain tennis, 2 year co-captain mock trial, National Honor Society Treasurer, ski instructor since the age of 13. Admitted to Clark School of Engineering and Honors.

We don’t know if she had the housing glitch because she forgot to check on Friday. She is also accepted to Georgia Tech, Temple, Pitt, Louisville, and Alabama.
