Official University of Michigan Class of 2015 Decisions [Only] Thread

@fairness:

Those are some excellent stats!! But what I have seen from CC is that many others with such stats have been deferred EA or RD. Nonetheless, I would stay very positive.

Cause there are rumors going around that many top students have been deferred since the adcoms believe they might not join the class of 2015 anyway and think of UM as a safety. So, I recommend you to send in additional pieces of information that show unique interest in the college. There have been fellow deferred applicants who have been since accepted with lower stats than your daughter.
Good luck to you and your daughter. I was deferred EA too btw!! :slight_smile: (but haven’t got a decision yet)

Thank you! My daughter IS very interested in UMich, that’s why she applied last December. Just hope she can eventually get in.

I agree. Those are very competitive stats and she should get in by continuing to show interest.

Fairness, you daughter certainly sounds well qualified, and of course only the adcoms can guess why they might have deferred her. Perhaps she did not, however, directly express the seriousness of interest in UMich? It might be worth it to review her Michigan specific responses and submit another reconfirming letter of interest – since she did not apply EA she might have been perceived to have considered Michigan an “afterthought.”
Also, was her schedule rigorous, eg., mostly AP credits with that unweighted GPA? On your HS naviance system, how many students are accepted at UMich and what historically has been their rank (ask her Guidance counselor to get this info for you.)

On the admissions website, there is a PDF download that outlines the areas/aspects involved in the holistic admissions. The most heavily weighted areas are GPA combined with course rigor (hardest classes chosen) AND known quality of the High School from which the candidate comes.

All of the above said, it is entirely possible that “deferral” has become a function of communication given the workload – meaning “we can’t decide right now so we’re going to let you know we can’t decide right now.” Best wishes. I am optimistic for your daughter’s chances.

I honestly think they were so overwhelmed by the number applications this year that they just deferred the applications they didn’t get to. Just a theory though.

My daughter has 5 AP courses (out of 8 due to schedule conflict). Almost all other courses have been advanced courses. She is also bilingual. Her school councelor is sending her midyear report out to UMich (with another 4.0). Hope this will help and she will hear good news from the university soon.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - The University of Michigan is sending more deferred admissions letters this academic year because of an increase in applications and a cut in the planned size of the entering class.

The Detroit Free Press says applications to the Ann Arbor school are up about 18 percent this year. At the same time, the university has reduced its target for the 2011 freshman class to 5,700.

The university says it admitted about 6,500 freshmen for 2010-11 – about 400 more than its target.

Recruitment director Erica Sanders says Michigan must be more cautious about its early admissions decisions until it knows how big an increase in applications it will get.

Sanders says the university hopes to be able to admit a larger number of wait-listed students this academic cycle.

Fairness, i know how you feel. michigan was definitely a “match” for me as people with 1900s get in, yet i scored a 2200, am student body president, 2 varsity sports, 9 APs… it totally discouraged me; i thought, “if i can’t even get into a match school, how could i possibly get into any of my reaches?!” but i keep telling myself the same thing that others have reassured me with - that the college application process is a crapshoot. your daughter clearly deserved to get in, and who knows why she didn’t, but maybe a “better” university will truly appreciate and recognize her. everything will turn out for the best.

does anyone know when deferred applicants will hear back again? from last year’s thread, it looked like notifications weren’t sent out until mid-april and people on cc were up in arms lol. i hope it’s not the same way this year…

^^In rough numbers then, if you had a 50% chance of admissions last year, this year it is only 37%.

2010 assumption of 6500/13000
2011 assumption of 5700/15340 (13000*1.18)

[/ul]General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: Just a highlight of my past community service at my high school. I was a tennis mentor/assistant coach for kids grades k-8 for 2 years during the summers of my freshman/sophomore years. My junior year, I helped set up many class fundraisers and donations for Riley’s Children’s Hospital and ALS research. I was also involved in many community service projects regarding our communities elementary schools. We helped gather donations of school supplies in what was dubbed “The Great Crayola Caper” and passed them out to needy children at various schools. In addition, we also ran a book fair in order to supply each first grader with their own book to keep and read (we didn’t quite meet the goal so we instead divided all the books up to be shelved in each of the elementary school’s libraries). Many students also volunteered to donate blood at our Student Council sponsored blood drives in which we earned an award for the highest donating school in the county. All of these same services have been repeated for the 2010-2011 school year with even greater success. Our annual National Honor Society book fair was sponsored by Barnes & Noble this year as we met our goal for one book for every first grader with even a few left over for their libraries. We continue to be the #1 school of donated blood in the county and we continue to provide donations via various fundraisers to Riley’s and ALS research. Additionally, in light of recent events in Japan, our National Honor Society has decided to start a “HOPE” for Japan drive in which “HOPE” t-shirts will be sold and all profits made will be donated to the American Red Cross to be sent over to Japan to lend a helping hand.

In addition to above if it even matters ~

Awards from sports aside from captains positions: Swimming: Mental Attitude Award (9 & 12), Scholar Athlete (11 & 12), Mid-state academic all-star (12). Tennis: Sportsmanship Award (11 & 12), Scholar Athlete (12), Mid-state academic all star (12).

I have sent one letter of expressed interest In January to the Office of Admissions highlighting my recent accomplishments/activities and my continued commitment to my school. I plan on sending another soon even though, at this point it may be pointless unless I am on the chopping block due to my horrendous SAT’s :(. Good luck to everyone!

My daughter actually applied on Nov.15, 2010.

Another student at my daughter’s school was accepted with ACT 29 (non-URM, lower GPA and similar class rank). The whole admission process at UMich seems very confusing. I’m not saying that student does not deserve a seat at UMich, but it does make my daughter feel bad when her friends asked her: “How could you be rejected?” Fortunately, my daughter has perspective and usually gets over a bad feeling quickly. She just said to her friends: “Oh well, I guess UMich is testing my patience and giving me a free lesson on how to handle rejections.”

By the way, her class rank goes up by 2 spots on her midyear report. Hopefully UMich will notice this and her other new achievements. She sent an email to the Admission.

General Comments: U of M is my safety. I’d really be happy to go there (especially if I got a scholarship), but I’m holding out for some other schools.

UMich is no one’s safety. Not even you.

@whatislove

well, technically, if one is almost 100% sure that he will be accepted to a school then he can call the school a safety. You can give someone a percentage chance but in the end some people will definitely get in.

Yes it’s not the easiest school in the country to get into but with good scores, Michigan’s decision is quite predictable.

@kobudnik

I’m pretty sure they get to every application. I applied on February 2nd, one day after the deadline, and still got the response today.

Definitely exciting to finally get into a good school after a few rejections

@impetuous

I was talking about early action dude.

Yes it’s not the easiest school in the country to get into but with good scores, Michigan’s decision is quite predictable.

Sorry, but I have to disagree. My S was deferred EA & ultimately waitlisted. He had a 33 ACT, a 3.7+ GPA, great teacher recs, 6 AP’s, and very well written essays. His achilles heel was EC’s/leadership.

I am inclined to think that perhaps it’s a “surer” thing for OOS students. UM does not provide much in the way of need based aid for OOS, so the money they bring in seems to be quite a hook in itself.
