• Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Recent immigrant. Financial difficulties. Learn English and achieve despite language barriers.
Reflection
• Strengths: Unique ECs. High achievements on writing. Nice scores for students of my background. Good and caring teachers!
• Weaknesses: Senior schedule- no math and science senior year. Very slacking schedule (got me into depression several times lol). Didn’t list volunteer hours on app
• Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I prayed. God’s mercy then poured on me. Also, I think Dean Furda was able to look past my weakness and into my stronger characters
• Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Rejected from all Ivies except D& C-- didn’t apply (without waitlisted), Rice, UT Austin, waitlisted Oxford college of Emory. Accepted: UPenn and Emory, 1 local school. Waiting on Stanford.

If I have one piece of advice, please take strong course load senior year (4 APs are enough) and never underestimate your situation. I went into senior year thinking I’m a strong enough applicant to the Ivies, and as you can see, I was rejected from everywhere.

Please don’t do Questbridge Match program. Be a finalist, and that’s it. But no more. The truth is getting match is very hard (1%). Take that chance to apply to your favorite school EA/ SCEA/ ED.

[] Essays: Common App was unique but a little risky (about my illiterate grandmother), Penn Supplement was very sincere and “me” (linked it to my entrepreneurship competition), and for my optional supp, I wrote a poem about a chess game that was a metaphor for my journey/character, so that was definitely risky but it paid off!
[] Teacher Recommendation: Didn’t read any, but one of them was definitely awesome (my teacher ran over the word limit)
[] Counselor Rec: Read it, very flattering

Rejected: Harvard, Princeton, Wesleyan
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I honestly have no idea - I really didn’t expect anything at all, especially from such a prestigious school and program, since I am ORM + International + never got an interview!

[/ul]General Comments: Congrats to all those who are accepted! I am still trying to decide between Yale and Wharton, which is super super super hard! Anyway, good luck to you all!

Decision: Accepted - CAS (Likely)

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2270 (710 CR, 780 M, 780 W)

[] Volunteer/Community service: Medical/dental clinic with a lot of patients who didn’t speak English, hospital, tutoring (including some foreign language stuff and English to ESL/immigrant students)
[] Summer Activities: See volunteer/community service.
[] Essays: Passable/good? Common App was about how my personality clashes with the way my parents raised me and the perspective I gained from that (pretty much screamed, “Hey, I’m Asian” to be honest). Why Penn was about how I often suffer from the [Tetris effect](Tetris effect - Wikipedia) and as a result, continue to blame tadpoles for hiccups.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Decent. From my physics teacher and psychology teacher.
[] Counselor Rec: Really great! He knows me and my story pretty well and his letter reflected that.
[] Additional Rec: N/A
[] Interview: Didn’t have one.

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): TX
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Large public school
[] Ethnicity: Asian-American
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: Upper middle
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None.
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: I have no idea honestly! My likely letter had a note from the Dean of Admissions about the accomplishments my GSA and I have managed to achieve though, so I’m going to assume ECs even though on paper they don’t stand out (I did write about GSA for the extracurricular short answer). Possibly essays and counselor rec.
[] Weaknesses: Asian interested in STEM without any outstanding STEM ECs/awards, awards, and when compared to others who are qualified I’m honestly pretty average!
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I have no idea! While I didn’t spend as much time as I should have on my apps, when I was completing them last minute, I knew I wanted to convey my motivations and personality as clearly and as well as possible and how that is all present in everything I do.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted Tulane, UT Dallas, UPitt. Rejected at Yale. Waitlisted Brown. Waiting on Harvard but fully expecting a rejection.

[/ul]General Comments: I originally wasn’t going to post my stats on here, but I remembered what it was like as a junior trying to figure out where to apply and how intimidating and disheartening it was to see Asian Americans with 2400s and 4.0s and great ECs be rejected so I wanted to post this so others would realize you don’t have to prodigious in order to get into a top school. I am so excited for the upcoming year and am glad I went with the strategy of only applying to schools I love.

Decision: Accepted - CAS

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): CR 780 M 700 WR 680
[] ACT:31
[] SAT II:Bio 620 (shouldn’t have taken it) Math 2: 660 Lit, 720
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1 of 134
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): taking them this year

[] Senior Year Course Load: Calc AB, AP Lit and Comp, AP US Gov, Physics, Spanish 4, do band and choir count? and PE?
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Commended Student, not major at all but it’s the best I’ve got
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): every choir imaginable, lots of theater type stuff, cross country manager, church activities… I could go on for a while
[] Job/Work Experience: local grocery store for about a year
[] Volunteer/Community service: mostly through church, 3 mission trips
[] Summer Activities: Iowa Ambassadors of Music Choir (summer tour in Europe)
[] Essays: pretty good, kinda strange
[] Teacher Recommendation: both were rather good, although I found out later one mistakenly thought I asked him to write me a scholarship recommendation
[] Counselor Rec: probably very generic but nice
[] Additional Rec: none
[li] Interview: none
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): Iowa
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: small public
[] Ethnicity: white
[] Gender: female
[] Income Bracket: upper 100,000 range
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): nothing, unless you count being from Iowa
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: most essays, scores, gpa/class rank, heavily involved in ECs
[] Weaknesses: I thought my “why Penn?” essay was pretty generic, also not enough leadership positions
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: my intro to penn essay was probably the strangest essay I’ve ever written, but I’m guessing they liked it.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: accepted to the U of Iowa, waitlisted at UChicago, rejected UNC Chapel Hill, Duke, Harvard (that was for kicks and giggles), still waiting to hear back from Stanford (dream school) and Georgetown.

[/ul]General Comments: I honestly can’t believe I got accepted to an Ivy League school. I will probably end up going here, and I’m so excited! This may be cheesy, but to everyone out there who comes from a small town where no one cares about going to a decent college, there is hope! I’m so happy :)

Accepted to Jerome Fisher!!!

I am so excited.

Also was waitlisted at Columbia and rejected at Harvard.
