[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Eagle Scout, fluent in Spanish, Governor’s Honors Program (for Spanish), awesome essays
[] Weaknesses: I should have done more with extracurriculars. Too many weekends spent hanging with friends instead of doing sports/volunteering.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I mean it’s a super competitive school, and I had no hooks (white christian male). My extracurriculars could’ve been stronger.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Accepted: State school (University of Georgia)
Rejected: Brown, Duke
Waitlisted: UChicago

[/ul]**General Comments: Really bummed. This was my top choice and I spent god knows how many hours perfecting my application. I know there’s still a chance I’ll get in off waitlist, and my state school is alright and super cheap, but this just sucks. Congrats if you got in though, and I hope my stats are helpful to future applicants! **

[ *] School Type: public
[ *] Ethnicity: white
[ *] Gender:female
[ *] Income Bracket(mention if FA candidate):
[ *] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):absolutely none.

[ /list][ b]Reflection**[list]
[ *] Strengths: I really emphasized the importance of women in engineering, I had good essays, good grades, ok extra curriculars. I am a good runner but not quite D1 college level
[ *] Weaknesses: test scores could have been better, I’m from a very noncompetitive school from the midwest. In fact, I can count the number of students in our 75 year history who went to an Ivy on one hand. Our school also has strict scheduling limitations, making it hard to fit in AP classes early in high school.
[ *] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: The admissions officer must have been in a good mood that day. I was shocked and just got lucky.
[ *] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Accepeted at the University of Michigan and Johns Hopkins
Waitlisted at Duke
Rejected at Yale, Harvard, Princeton, Columbia (those were major reaches anyway)

[ /list][ b]General Comments: Totally surprised I got in. I have good extracurriculars and grades, but I was worried I wouldn’t stand out. I have no MAJOR acheivements. After applying to a ton of reach schools, I don’t regret it. To me it was better to try and fail then wonder what could have been. I was in the total mindset to accept my U of M offer, but now I have a tough decision. Congrats to everyone who is accepted!**

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Personal essay, supplemental essay, experience in the major applied to (Art History)
[] Weaknesses: SAT Scores, interview, lack of a coherent resume with activites well-understood by the admissions officer
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Personally, I feel that the SAT was the weakest part of my application. Test scores aside, my application is really not outstanding.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Columbia (rejected), Boston University, McGill University (Accepted)

[/ul]**General Comments: There are plenty of others willing to call you a failure. A fool. A loser. A hopeless souse. Don’t you ever say it of yourself. You send out the wrong signal, that is what people pick up…You care about something, you fight for it. You hit a wall, you push through it. There’s something you need to know about failure, Tintin. You can never let it defeat you. - Captain Haddock **

Accepted SEAS, stats on Yale’s RD Decision thread

Decision: Rejected - SEAS

[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National AP Scholar, biology olympiad semi-finalist, UN Representative in UNDPI, some other stuff that doesn’t matter anymore
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): a bunch of stuff with plenty of awards also in math and science (like AIME 4 times, science olympiad national medals, acadec, a lot of math competitions, other stuff that every asian does); won some writing contests; I write for local and online newspapers; varsity tennis, some stupid music awards, ongoing research with professor; german stuff, representative of UN; oh and I absolutely love learning from coursera and EdX courses, especially the ones on philosophy and human physiology; some other stuff that no one should care about since I was rejected
[] Job/Work Experience:
[] Volunteer/Community service: president of non-profit that helps funds education for underprivileged children in China and India; tutoring inner-city children, hospital stuff, religious stuff; wrote and published a short children’s chapter book to encourage children in inner-city places to read
[] Summer Activities: tennis, research, community service, studying
[] Essays: obviously my opinion of the essays isn’t valid
[] Teacher Recommendation: no clue, probably decent
[] Counselor Rec: no clue
[] Additional Rec:

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant):PA [] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: public competitive
[] Ethnicity: asian
[] Gender: male
[] Income Bracket(mention if FA candidate): 100,000
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: I’m not sure anymore; really not happy right now
[] Weaknesses: probably everything; I really need to work 20x harder if I want to accomplish anything in life
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: not strong enough; I just finished reading Mahatma Gandhi’s autobiography and Malcolm X’s autobiography: man, they worked 1000x harder than me and they didn’t even have the same resources and support that I have. I really am pathetic. I’ve got to seriously push myself the next 4 years
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: rejected basically every Ivy except cornell; probably going to state school though

[/ul]**General Comments: I know people say these college decisions aren’t the end of your life, but I can’t help but think back to my childhood when I used to have dreams of going to a good college and of accomplishing things to make my parents, friends, and society proud, and if I just worked a little harder maybe, just maybe, I could’ve done something for the world. I also can’t help but feel idiotic because I used to be so smart in middle school, but I seriously downgraded in high school. whatever, basically, the lesson is to work hard **

Decision: Accepted - CAS

[] Essays: I don’t know how “good” they were because I only asked one friend to proof them as I didn’t want anyone changing their sincerity. I think they were good though.
[] Teacher Recommendation: should have been good, I don’t know for sure, I never read them
[] Counselor Rec: Great! she has helped me so much throughout high school and she had a lot of great things to say. I cried while reading it, it was so nice.

[] Essays: I was proud of them, but they weren’t extensively edited.

[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Choice of an unpopular major, maybe?

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: ACT, CR score of my SAT, demonstrated achievement/passion in the field of my prospective major
[] Weaknesses: GPA, math section of the SAT, lack of leadership positions or extensive service projects
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I suppose I fit one or more of the demographics they were looking for in their freshman class. And perhaps they were enticed by my theoretical ability to pay for the vast majority of the tuition.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at Georgetown, Tulane (full tuition), Fordham (full tuition), Stony Brook (full tuition), UMich, McGill, UIUC, Rice, and the University of Arizona

[/ul]**General Comments: **
I’m honored to have been accepted by Penn, but I won’t be able to afford it, unfortunately. I guess this has more to do with my family’s financial situation than Penn, though. Still, the whole admissions process has left me quite disenchanted with the American university system and how image- and money-based it is.

[] Counselor Rec: Amazing, also.
[] Interview: Went good. Made her laugh and we had a really good, chill chit-chat. I took courses at Penn, so I knew the campus. Not only from the outside, but the actual inside. I took Calculus at Penn in the David Rittenhouse Labs, and took Statistics at Wharton, and a couple others…so I was able to talk to her and be like “Oh, I already found my favorite spot to study before class, and the best place to eat.” So we connected right away and had stuff to talk about.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: I dunno…
[] Weaknesses: I dunno…
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Because I’m freakin’ amazing. But seriously, because I go to the worst school possible. The average SAT score is around 1100. So an ACT score of 30 is considered 99.999% here. I’m from Philly, so Penn knows about the schools in the surrounding area and knows that my school has the worst teachers. They look at applications in the context of where you are. You could have 2200 SAT and be 60th in class rank, and they will chose someone with a 30 ACT in 3rd class rank over you.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Temple University, La Salle University, Drexel University, Arcadia University, Penn State

[/ul]**General Comments: ** However, I did take courses at Penn through their Young Scholars Program and got all A’s in their courses. I always had the best score out of the whole class (with actual Penn undergrads). I had my professor from Penn write me a recommendation, so that could have really boosted my application.

Congratulations to all those who were accepted. I look forward to meeting you all if we do decide to attend. To all those who were rejected, I wish you the best of luck with your other decisions. Trying to get into an Ivy is akin to drawing from a lottery and hoping for a win; it is not a reflection of your self-worth, intelligence, or potential. I was denied four Ivies, and waitlisted on the one other. I’ve seen mirror opposite stories.

I do this because I want to help future applicants and show the most unlikely of applicants that it is possible to be admitted to schools like Penn…

 3. Officer of State Student Councils group
 4. Captain of Junior Varsity Women’s Track and Field team
 5. Teenage Leader of My Christian teenage group that participates in community outreach programs
 6. Founder of Infinite Pride Tutoring Services
 7. Captain of VEX Robotics team

Job/Work Experience: State Position
Volunteer/Community service: I work a lot in my church. I also work with a teen community outreach group for 5 years now. Also:
• A community walk to raise money for water wells in Africa
• Pittsburgh Project: Rebuilding houses for the needy in the city of Pittsburgh, PA
• Junior Achievement

Summer Activities: Baby sitting, tutoring, working with children, summer community college courses for those necessary classes that my high school doesn’t offer, like AP Physics. I did Stanford EPGY once the summer after freshman year. I wanted to do it again because it was awesome, but it’s expensive.
Essays: I worked soooooooo hard on them. I think they were pretty good. PM me to learn more.
Teacher Recommendation: Great! I asked my AP Calc teacher and my AP English teacher. I was called a “renaissance woman” lol.
Counselor Rec: Good! My counselor knows me very closely. She’s wonderful!
Additional Rec: From the state superintendent of schools.
Interview: In person. We met at a Starbucks and the interview lasted an hour and 15 min. My interviewer told me she liked me! It went great! I learned so much from her. I believe she had an impact on the decision.

Reflection
Strengths: Writing, Passion for each one of my many interests, GPA and rank
Weaknesses: Test Scores
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I have NOO idea why any of these acceptances came for me. Not that I don’t think I’m capable, but there were so many other qualified applicants!
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Acceptances-- Carnegie Mellon, Duke (diversity likely), Johns Hopkins, Cornell (diversity likely), University of Maryland Full Ride Banneker/Key, Univ. of Pittsburgh Full Tuition, George Mason Full Ride, Drexel, American, UMBC, NYU Poly
Wait list: None!!
Reject: None!!

General Comments: It’s 2 AM and I’m still in awe after today. No rejections!! I cannot believe I got in! I didn’t submit the recommended physics subject test score, so I didn’t think I got into SEAS and I hadn’t heard ANYTHING from Penn for the past 3 months, so I was expecting a, “We regret to inform you…” letter. So pumped! I think I may go here (or Duke. Or UMD. Gotta compare financial aid) My advice to those who want it: be yourself. Be yourself be yourself be yourself. I can’t say it enough. I had to learn that colleges want you, not your scores or achievements. Remember that those numbers are only representative of what YOU can do, so if there is any other way for you to showcase your abilities, DO IT! Participate in activities that you are passionate about and activities that will allow you to learn, grow, and develop. Write your essays passionately. Allow someone who doesn’t know you well to read it. If it doesn’t evoke any type of emotion, then rewrite it. Lastly, apply even if you don’t think you’ll get in. I didn’t think I’d get into Penn or get any of the scholarship offers and acceptances that I got because I doubted myself. This process allows you to grow and you learn a lot about yourself. You just may be surprised! That’s about it… Good luck!
