• 4 years Marching band on mellophone (section leader two years)

[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Legacy, I think - my dad went to Penn for grad school.
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: GPA, challenging course load, legacy, having attended SAAST at Penn
[] Weaknesses: SAT score, definitely, and maybe essays
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I honestly think being accepted had a lot to do with having attended SAAST, or at least that it gave me a solid reason for being interested in Penn. I didn’t have a comparable connection to the other Ivy schools I applied to, and I didn’t get into any of them. Also, I don’t know if this had anything to do with it because I never got a response, but I did email Penn an “update” on my activities around early March and stated that Penn had become my top choice.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Georgia Tech Honors Program, University of Georgia Honors Program
Rejected: Yale (after being deferred early), MIT, Dartmouth, Columbia, Stanford, Brown, Rice

[/ul]General Comments:
I was absolutely amazed that I got in because I’m completely terrible at writing. I got rejected from so many schools that I was feeling really down on myself, but Penn was my top choice, and I’m THRILLED to have gotten in!

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Business/International Focus of lifestyle and extracurriculars, recommendations.

[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I was probably one of very few students applying to Huntsman with Italian skills, I had a strong business and international background considering I am from WI, showed genuine interest

Penn intro discussed how I am an individual but I try to help others and form connections when I can. Other Penn essay talked about my experiences with urban and suburban lifestyles.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Physics B teacher - probably really good, I was the only one to get a 5 that year and I love physics. I didn’t read it so I don’t know for sure.
U.S. History teacher - didn’t read, but he loved me and he is a great writer.
[] Counselor Rec: She liked me a lot, but I doubt it was anything too special
[li] Interview: never offered one :(
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): New York
[] School Type: Suburban ho-hum high school, doesn’t offer many good classes or extracurricular opportunities, 1-2 get into Cornell and maybe a few other top schools every year
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: < 20000
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First generation, low-income

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: GPA in 11th and 12th grade, SAT, Questbridge, essays
[] Weaknesses: Extracurriculars/volunteering , rank
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: One of my Penn essays really seemed to fit with what they have to offer as a university. I’m really surprised I got in, and they even told me I was in the top 15% of admitted students D:
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Penn, Vassar, University of Rochester; Waitlisted - Cornell; Rejected - Princeton, MIT, Stanford, Yale, Brown, Duke, Columbia

[/ul]General Comments: I’m probably going here and I’m visiting for the Scholars Preview next week! I’m so happy to have the opportunity to attend a school of this caliber, because I was so sure I would get rejected everywhere. They also gave me amazing financial aid so I am pretty much set.

Decision: Accepted - CAS

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2200: 700 CR, 740 M, 760 W
[] ACT: N/A
[] SAT II: 800 Math IIC, 720 USH, 720 Bio E
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.75 or 3.76…can never remember
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Top 5%
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): 5 Eng Lit, 5 BC Calc, 5 Bio, 4 USH, European hsitory and Spanish for this year
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
[] Senior Year Course Load: Orchestra, AP Spanish, European lit (hardest English class at my school), AP European history (hardest history class in my school), Journalism II honors, Yoga, Global leadership (graduate with special diploma), Gender in society nonlevelled. Multivariable calculus at Harvard extension school, paid for by my school.
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): None, except for a few awards at Model UN conferences and school awards
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Sec-gen of Model UN (president), head of MidMUN (subprogram of Model UN where high school students teach Model UN for middle school students. I expanded the program from 1 to 6 schools), Managing writing editor of school newspaper, columnist of the school newspaper, writing coach, honors peer tutor (for students failing MCAS, a state exam), president of the orchestra.
[] Job/Work Experience: None, really.
[] Volunteer/Community service: MidMUN, Writing coach, honors peer tutoring, a few hours at hospitals.
[] Summer Activities: High school summer school (before 9th grade), JHU CTY (before 10th grade), Math Camp (PROMYS, before 11th grade), psych and philosophy at UMass Boston (before 12th grade)
[] Essays: Main one about my first playdate with a white kid, experiencing the awkward clash of cultures and explaining my appreciation of this awkwardness in order to experience other cultures. EC one about why I do Model UN. Optional intro to Penn about how teachers always mispronounce my name, but this year they don’t because many people know me for my interesting column pieces in the newspaper - hence, “making a name for myself.” (I thought it was incredibly witty)
[] Teacher Recommendation: Good and good, if not, good and decent. One from my math teacher who I’ve had frosh year and junior year. I jumped a year ahead, but I was always very quiet in my classes. Another from my history teacher junior year, who is fascinated by culture and has had many interesting conversations with me about my Asian American culture.
[] Counselor Rec: Good or decent. I always freaked out to her about college and life and stress and homework and would leave her office after she’d say (rather helplessly), “Everything’s going to be okay…?”
[li] Interview: Not offered.
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): MA
[] School Type: Public, about 1800 kids.
[] Ethnicity: Asian American
[] Gender:Female
[] Income Bracket: $35,000
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First generation, low income in a high income city

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: I am not the average Asian applicant…yet to some extent, I am. But not really. Also, took lots of really hard classes and carved out a niche for myself.
[] Weaknesses: GPA (3.75), volunteer
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I tried to make myself appear as human as possible, capable of awkwardness and bad-ish grades, but I emphasized my passion for culture. For this, I stood out from other Asian applicants. Also, I took a lot of hard courses.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Georgetown school of nursing and health, Tufts (with guaranteed research stipends), BC. Waitlisted: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, UChicago, Johns Hopkins. Rejected: Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, MIT.

[/ul]General Comments: Was not expecting to get waitlisted and denied at the places I did! Also, I tried Questbridge this year and they didn’t accept me, which threw off my plans of applying early to Cornell which may never have brought me here. Lots of financial aid, lots of spontaneous laughter in my family as a result, and I can’t wait to go to Penn this fall.

Decision: Accepted

[] IB (place score in parenthesis): None.

[] Job/Work Experience: None.
[] Volunteer/Community service: Recycling community service leader, 4 years.
[] Summer Activities: Research Fellowship during Junior year, travel the rest of the summers.
[] Essays: I spent a lot of time writing them and perfecting them to the best of my ability. I think they were a very good reflection of me and were well written.
[] Teacher Recommendation: One was spectacular, the other was very good too, but not written very well.
[] Counselor Rec: Wonderful, she and I have a very good relationship.
[] Additional Rec:
[] Interview: Very good!

[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Caucasian
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: <$50,000
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Not exactly “hook” by definition, but “woman in science” may have helped in some schools.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Schedule, APs, focused extracurriculars, essays.
[] Weaknesses: No outstanding national awards.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I feel very fortunate overall. I think being an immigrant and a QB finalist really helped me standout.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Harvard, Yale (likely), Dartmouth (L), Columbia, UPenn (L), Cornell (L) , Northeastern.
Rejected: Stanford
Waitlisted: MIT, Princeton

[/ul]General Comments: Congratulations to everyone for making it through this process, and to the amazing schools you have gotten into. If you didn’t get in to your top school, don’t beat yourself up over it. As everyone else will tell you, this process can be very unpredictable and those who get in do not always know why. You will succeed anywhere you go if you take advantage of all the opportunities provided. To those who will be applying in the future: don’t obsess over one school and don’t stress out about this entire process more than you have to (I did a bit too much). Work hard on your applications, don’t leave them to the last minute and once those applications are out of your hands, let the chips fall where they may.

Last week, I was rejected from every Ivy League School, except for Columbia, where I was waitlisted. These are my stats.

36 ACT
4.4 GPA (4.0 unweighted)
2 Year Swimming Captain, 4 Year Varsity
President of a BuildOn Club, 2 years
2x All State Swimming
National Merit Finalist
US Presidential Scholar Candidate
Multiple other Minor Awards
250 Hrs Community Service
National AP Scholar
12 AP Classes
Worked tutoring ACT and SAT Classes
Both teachers I had do my recommendations are very close to me, as well as my counselor.
Contacted Coaches to walk on to swimming programs
And my application essays were reviewed by friends at Harvard and Yale, and they were decent at least.

As can be seen, I expected to be admitted to at least one school, however, I was not, and I am very disappointed. I did receive another minor honor this week, and though it itself may not be the best grounds for appeal, I believe my current situation warrants a second look. Anyone have any advice? I could really use some help.

In addition, I am an Indian Male.

[] Summer Activities: FBI Multicultural Youth Academy (got in pilot year, volunteered as a leader the second year)
[] Essays: CA one was decent.
[] Teacher Recommendation: I’d say pretty strong for both
[] Counselor Rec: A little above average, I suppose
[] Additional Rec: Kinda small, but used the supervisor from the Youth Academy
[li] Interview: I actually thought it was my worst one, but turned out to be one of the best. The guy was genuinely interested in having me explain my many “potential career interests”. I thought I was presumptuous and unspecialized, but he thought I was extremely versatile; a classmate of mine said he alluded to me in his interview 0.o.
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: I reread my general essay and it solely focused on civic and international duty of Penn. I think that was my main ticket. My Huntsman one was a fairly okay essay on oil now that I look at it.
[] Weaknesses: Volunteer hours. I didn’t have many international/business oriented activities but I don’t think those are major prerequisites at all.
[] Why you think you were accepted: I reread my general essay and it solely focused on civic and international duty of Penn. I think that was my main ticket. My Huntsman one was a fairly okay essay on oil now that I look at it.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Reject (Other ivies)

[/ul]General Comments: I didn’t really take the SAT II for Spanish, which is my target language… I’m really kinda astounded. Yet grateful, nonetheless as Penn was my first choice. I know assuredly there were plenty of other well-qualified applicants, but I trust their decision. I don’t post on CC often, but I’d like to return the favor since I looked at quite a few decisions threads the past year or so.

You were rejected because you got beat by the school quota. Usually one person per one thousand at your school. Most Ivies group schools together.

I know, it’s kind of late… but after looking at these threads for the last two years, I really felt the need to contribute to this thread.

Reflection
Strengths:GPA, Class Rank, work experience, Essays.
Weaknesses: Standardized test scores were horrible, especially my SAT 2.
Why you think you were accepted: Penn has been my top choice for a while (I wrote a thread about this in November lol). I showed a passion for Penn despite never visiting.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Rejected at all the other ivy leagues. Wait listed at JHU, Williams, and Vanderbilt.

My advice to future applicants is to cast a wide net. You’ll get lucky somewhere, like I did lol. I applied to maybe 15 top schools and was only accepted at Penn. Oh and also SAT scores are not everything, but its probably what kept me out of most of the other ivys. Show a passion for the school in the essays if you can. Everyone is qualified, its the person who writes the best essays that gets in.
