General Comments: My admissions results and those of my peers made me realize how much of a crapshoot college admissions can be. Penn was my dream school since sophomore year and I was tremendously disappointed when I was first deferred and then ultimately rejected. I will be attending Columbia University (CC) in the fall.

ACCEPTED TO PENN AND WILL ATTEND. COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES. BIOPHYSICS MAJOR WITH POSSIBLE PHILOSOPHY MAJOR. MED SCHOOL TRACK.

Copying the user profile stats profile, with more specific class rank because of importance and some other additions (sorry but this is quicker).

Nonetheless, I am proud to be going to Penn and congrats to all of you as well. I never thought I’d turn down Princeton, thought to be the best undergrad university to me until the last minute (no slight to Penn, but Stanford is my favorite university overall by a significant margin, and I have even been there, but I am from Ohio and moving out for the first time with potential anxieties and hardship, I could not be that far away, so it will be my med school goal even with the total unpredictability for top med admissions – I can still have a goal, unless Penn changes my mind because I did love their med campus, just sick of cold and snow).

*Note: was an athletic recruit but decided not to play and informed on this final decision midway through the recruit and admit process; was dropped as a recruit to UVA because of soccer program selectivity. Best soccer program that had firm offer on table was Duke.

*Funny thing: University of Akron is close to my home, and it is a serviceable non-selective large state school but not anywhere as academically prestigious as all my other choices, YET I love the principle and specialized prestige of their soccer program, was a die hard fan, and had the single best coach I ever saw in Caleb Porter before he left to move on to pros, and I was lightly considered for what is/was the the best soccer program if the last eight years in the country, including the school’s only team national title, but it was always conditioned on would be hard to ever find much playing time unless I improved, so with that and Porter moving on, it made the decision more logical to attend a better academic school not just letting my emotions go on a roll out of fandom!

End.

phileecheez,

Your situation is kind of surprising, as you said. I always wondered if colleges reject perfect scores because they like to throw around the stat of how many perfect scores were rejected. Still, they need a reason. In my experience, undergrad admissions has been very consistent with my friends. I don’t know about you, but I do know my school, although public is very well known by most top school admissions. The school supposed strength prestige SEEMS to make a difference when I compare, even if they say it is about what you make out of the school you attend; I don’t believe that is totally true.

But, you did get into Columbia and will attend. As seen in my profile, I did not apply or look at Columbia. New York City was just too much of a major move. But you really are at a place as great as any undergrad school there is so congrats. Dartmouth was also an impressive admit. But the schools that rejected you do at least to have sub-20% admit rates. Cornell can be deceptively hard because the Arts and Science college is more like 12%-13% and not the ~17% of the entire undergrad university. Best of luck enjoying Columbia because you obviously can handle any school, and even the ones that rejected know it (hence why it can look like a crapshoot, though not as absurd as med school decisions, which are baffling sometimes). If I could only choose Dartmouth or Columbia, I’d certainly have to consider closely even if I did visit Dartmouth. Columbia is just a “more powerful” name in the overall university context. Hard to turn down (kind of like me choosing Penn over Princeton, though Penn has an entire med reputation that Princeton doesn’t have with no med school and all, but that was only part of the reason, much of it being at that level I don’t see a difference in academic quality or investment, which would include Columbia too). Would be interested in your preliminary major/career interest.

^Honestly, I think Phileecheez made the classic mistake of applying to way too many colleges. If he had buckled down and applied to only 3-4 really elite schools and focused all his efforts on those schools, I think he would have had much better admissions results. Even still, an acceptance to Colombia is nothing to scoff at (especially considering its technically more selective than Penn lol).

NHS 2 years, a youth philanthropy board, 20 golf tournaments a summer. School newspaper. Homecoming royalty
[ *] Job/Work Experience: cleaned pools for elderly neighbors
[ *] Volunteer/Community service: youth philanthropy board called “teen trust” and lots of volunteering thru NHS and the swim team
[ *] Summer Activities: lots of golf tournaments, some swim meets, some goofing off and getting in trouble
[ *] Essays: must have worked, wrote about a golf shot my junior year that took a lot of confidence and how it was a culmination of me gaining confidence through my life by coming out of my shell. Others were about swimming and a few books I read I think. A penn essay was about how I secured some funding for a local preschool that had been devastated by a flood.

Reflection
Strengths: Extremely committed and dedicated to things I love/am interested in, rowing recruit
Weaknesses: Weak GPA
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I had the support of the lightweight rowing coach. Without the coach’s support, I would not have gotten into Penn. I still had to meet many academic standards though.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: UC Davis, UCLA accepted. Denied: Princeton, Yale
General Comments: Find what your passions are early in high school. When you really love something, it will shine on your application and they’ll notice it. I fell in love with rowing, and it helped me get into Penn. Despite my low GPA, the coach was able to help me out, so I’m really glad that I pursued rowing.

To Winfred95:
I am a Penn alum who had family income a little more than yours and attended on City of Philadelphia and Mayor of Philadelphia scholarships. I have served as a first reader at a major university. You earned your spot in the Class of 2017. YOU are the reason why the University was founded and YOU are the reason it continues to exist.

Admissions offices don’t make mistakes and they don’t admit students out of pity. Don’t worry about why someone else did or did not get in Penn or anywhere else. You didn’t get to read their app. A lot of experienced people read your app and discussed it and reached the conclusion that you would thrive at Penn. Go with it!

You have been given a place at the table. Now make sure you eat your fill. And enjoy the meal! Oh yeah-- at some point in your life-- either for your own kid or a stranger’s-- help someone else find the dining room.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! ENJOY!!! Penn is going to enrich your life in every way possible!!!

@Winfred, you look like you took advantage of everything available to you, you sound like a humble person, very interested in learning and grateful for you acceptance.

Just a guess.

If true, you accomplished a lot for someone in an economically difficult family situation. My guess is that your parents made sacrifices for your education though they may not have much time and money to invest, they must’ve given you emotional support. You scored well on your tests, better than what your gpa, course load and economic station would seem to permit.

I think the admissions folks probably read about you and thought what can this person do given the advantages and resources we have to offer.

Just a guess.

But I agree that you are not a charity case. I think the expectations for you are high that you will take all those advantages offered and do great things with them.
