Made my teachers cry so that’s a good sign.
Penn Supplement: About my passion for neuroscience and my dream to study at Penn with a major in the Biological Basis of Behavior
Teacher Recommendation:
AVID teacher - She’s been my teacher for three years and understands my passion for service learning and my involvement in extracurriculars
English teacher - teaches the hardest English class in my school. I was at the top of his class and he considered me to be one of the most “divergent” thinkers he’s ever had
Counselor Rec: Tbh I think he hates me but he submitted all the basics so that’s good
Additional Rec:N/A
Interview: Amazing!!! We really connected. It was only about 45 mins long but we discussed so much. I even showed her the plan I wrote about in my essay and she got teary eyed when I told her about my life story. I still talk to her if I have any questions about Penn.

What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: my story and passion for education and being self taught in various aspects (water painting, playing the cello, etc) due to my determination
Weaknesses: ACT and SAT scores.
Why you think you were accepted: Memorable, well written essays (I literally made 7 drafts of each)
Where else were you accepted:Unknown. I applied to 8 other schools but UPenn was my number one so through Questbridge I’m not allowed to know if any of the other schools I ranked below it also accepted me but I honestly couldn’t care less because UPenn is life.
The most unique thing in your application: My UPenn essay. I wrote about the how the A to Z Encyclopedia of Serial Killers triggered my love for neuroscience. It’s my favorite essay.

bump

Applied for Financial Aid?: I will but haven’t sent it in yet.
Intended Major: English
State (if domestic applicant): NY
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public, Top 100 in state
Ethnicity: Did not disclose
Gender: Male
Income Bracket:
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None.

Reflection

Strengths: Applied as English major and have very strong English scores and extras. 100 average for 4 years, president of three English related clubs, great relationship with my English teachers.
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: Made it very central to my major. Talked about favorite books.
Weaknesses: No hooks (urm etc).
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/deferred/rejected: ACT is on 75th percentile for UPenn. GPA is average for people normally accepted from my school. Recs definitely helped because I was told they were glowing. ED provides a strong boost for UPenn applicants (25% acceptance rate – highest in Ivy League).
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/deferred/rejected: None. Only applied UPenn ED.
The most unique thing in your application: Leadership positions across multiple clubs. Father was diagnosed with brain tumor and I wanted to research neurology so I got an internship working for the head of neurology at a hospital.

Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development): Nada

Reflection
Strengths: Leadership, Essays, Unweighted GPA
Weaknesses: Test Scores (especially SAT and Math II), Class Rank, not that many AP’s taken
Were else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Nowhere yet
What would you have done differently?: I would have taken more AP’s and I would have tried harder to get and A+ rather than an A- Freshman and Sophomore year.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Not enough AP’s. I’m a white male from Connecticut with average test scores for Penn.

Decision: Deferred - Wharton

Objective:

SAT I (breakdown): 2290; 770 math, 760 reading, 760 writing

AP (place score in parenthesis):
IB (place score in parenthesis): 6 in calculus, 6 in computer science
Senior Year Course Load: full IB
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): national merit commended, national honors society, a couple others nothing impressive

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):

Overall, around 400 hours of community service from teaching Aikido, tutoring, volunteering at the hospital, etc.

Job/Work Experience: Refereeing youth soccer games for a year
Volunteer/Community service: over 400 hours
Summer Activities: Microsoft high school camp
Essays: Common App: 8.5/10 UPenn supplement: 9/10
Teacher Recommendation: Did not see either, suspecting they are good probably 8/10
Counselor Rec: Very good 9/10
Additional Rec: Excellent, written by my aikido instructor for the past 7 years 10/10
Interview: Excellent, was told that I was a perfect match for Wharton 10/10
Other:
I am also doing a research project on cryptography under a mathematics professor who got his B.A. from UPenn and a PhD at University of Washington. It is very intensive and I mentioned it in my Wharton supplemental essay. I think both of my essays are somewhere between good and excellent. I talked about my transformation from when I first started Aikido when I was in 1st grade to how I teach now.

Applied for Financial Aid?: Nope
Intended Major: Finance
State (if domestic applicant): Washington
Country (if international applicant): United States Citizen!
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: 400k+
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none

Reflection: I am sad that I have not been accepted into my dream school. Although I was deferred, my chances of acceptance are now extremely slim. I guess I need to shift my focus to the other Ivies! Good luck everyone.

Strengths: Strong overall. Solid SAT and GPA, rigorous curriculum, and good ECs. I think my teaching experience in Aikido was unique.
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: I focused heavily on my teaching experience in Aikido and my research project in cryptography.
Weaknesses: My ethnicity, as well as the fact that this is Wharton. Sure my GPA could have been a 4.0 and my SAT a 2400 and chances are I would probably be accepted. I tried my best, and well I was deferred. I am honored that an institution as selective as Wharton saw me as worthy of a second consideration. I hope that they reconsider and I am accepted.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/deferred/rejected: See Weaknesses.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/deferred/rejected: I have not applied early anywhere else. I have submitted RD to UC Berkeley, UCLA, and the University of Washington already. I plan on applying to a number of other schools such as Brown, Harvard, and theWashington University in St. Louis to name a few.
The most unique thing in your application: I think my Aikido experience coupled with my Japanese international exposure was very unique.

Decision: Deferred - Wharton

2: 7/10 - she had a ton of letters, was probably a bit bland

Counselor Rec: Average

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Business Economics & Public Policy
State (if domestic applicant): Vermont
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: Middle-low
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First-Gen college student

Reflection

Strengths: Extracurriculars, Recommendation letters, lots of leadership
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: I focused mainly on being first generation, about how I went through the whole college admissions process by myself.
Weaknesses: ACT, essays
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/deferred/rejected: Extremely competitive applicant pool (and applied to Wharton!) My ACT score is just below the 25% mark, that definitely didn’t help. Rushed through my Wharton app.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/deferred/rejected: Accepted to Fordham University! Will be applying to UChicago, Occidental, Northeastern, American… and others.
The most unique thing in your application: I was lucky enough to get a letter of recommendation from my college professor. I took Principles of Microeconomics, as well as Macroeconomics at University of Vermont. I really got to know the professor (and did well in the class!) When I asked her about a letter of rec. she was ecstatic. She let me read and edit the essay as well.

Anyways, congrats to everyone that was accepted! I really wasn’t shocked to be deferred, and I’m excited to apply to other schools.

Teacher Recommendation:

Applied for Financial Aid?: No
Intended Major: Computer science

School Type: Private all girls
Ethnicity: white
Gender: female

Reflection

Strengths: Fairly good testing, grades, specific essay, personality shone through in personal statement, visited
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: girl applying to engineering
Weaknesses: First semester junior grades
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/deferred/rejected: Because it is so competitive these decisions are practically arbitrary. Honestly this whole idea of rating each other and guessing if we will get in is silly. There is no way to properly represent yourself in a single application and one’s worth is not defined by these factors or their college acceptances.
The most unique thing in your application: I’m queen of the world. That’s pretty cool.

Decision: Rejected - CAS

Objective:

Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Russian-Jewish/Israeli
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: Middle Class
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Not much other than my intense passion for studying history.

Reflection: Meh. Hope I get in elsewhere.

Strengths:
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: My love of history,
Weaknesses:
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/deferred/rejected: I had a rough 10th grade year because I was sick with digestive pains for most of the year. Missed a lot of school (17 days) because of doctors appointments and that dragged my GPA down from a 4.1. I also couldn’t do much outside of school because I would literally come home nauseous or with nasty cramping in my gut. My guidance counsellor explained that though.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/deferred/rejected: Accepted to Penn State (safety)
The most unique thing in your application: My unique interest in studying cold war history and my emphasis on my russian-jewish cultural background.

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): legacy, which is the real reason I got in

Reflection

Strengths: Non-reading SAT scores, ECs, Essays, Interview, Science Research/Baseball Research, legacy
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself:
Weaknesses: Weak SAT 2 scores, no traditional senior science, not a unique applicant
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/deferred/rejected: Legacy, Essays, Interview… no glaring weakness
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/deferred/rejected: None
The most unique thing in your application: Creating my own baseball formula to model pitching, better at predicting future ERA than any other publicly available pitching stat. Still wouldn’t have mattered w/o legacy

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none

Reflection

Strengths:
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: had a very strong Why Wharton essay. Solid EC’s.
Weaknesses: Mediocre numbers. Asian. Also feel like there is a big backlash against California this year from all top-tier schools. Plenty of 2400/36/4.0s with fantastic essays were straight rejected from HYPS/ivies. My common app essay could have been better.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/deferred/rejected: see weaknesses
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/deferred/rejected: have applied uchic early. probs going to end up at berkeley lol.
The most unique thing in your application: top 3 nationally at that EC. Wharton didn’t get my update in time tho, so maybe RD will look better.

Teacher Recommendation: Never saw, but I love those teachers dearly and I’m sure they’re great.
Counselor Rec: She doesn’t speak English well… so… not bagging on her, but the essay itself probably wasn’t great.
Additional Rec: Chemistry teacher who I TA for now. Presumably amazing.
Interview: My interviewer didn’t like Penn, said he mostly partied with the Frat guys - specifically said he didn’t take advantage of Wharton’s special internship opportunities (which was a big reason I applied).

Reflection

Strengths: My leadership and EC’s.
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: Politics was my number one focus.
Weaknesses: Everything else, I suppose.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/deferred/rejected: Class rank. I came from a school with no advanced classes Freshman year so I didn’t know they existed. Then when ranks came out Sophomore year I was ranked 49 because I didn’t know what AP was. I guess I basically shot myself in the foot.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/deferred/rejected: Accepted - UT Red McCombs (only other school I applied to)
The most unique thing in your application: I talked about how the political problems we’re experiencing today aren’t that foreign and America has actually solved them before, it just lacks leadership - and I wanted to be that leadership.

Essays: Common App: 9/10: I wrote about why I’m different and do things differently. I thought it was good, looked at it yesterday and thought it sucked, and then I guess it was okay!
Penn Supplement: 9/10: I wrote about my past as writing to the newspaper about politics when I was 12. Had a funny spin on it but passionate about Penn and why I want to go there.
Teacher Recommendation: Spanish teacher (7/10): He probably wrote me a great letter. He doesn’t speak native English, so I’m sure it was good. I guess it worked out well.
History teacher: (10/10): She loved me. I always did well in her class and she was extremely proud of me for getting a 5 on AP Gov even though it wasn’t offered at my school. I’m sure it was glowing.
Counselor Rec: (8/10): I’ve only known her this year, but she was extremely supportive of me,
Additional Rec: (9/10): Synagogue youth advisor. He loves me and he is my mentor, so I expect it was great.
Interview: It went extremely well! It was last minute, but we were very similar. Being from St. Louis, we happened to be watching the Ferguson grand jury decision in the middle of the interview and it somehow made the interview more important. It went well.

That I’m different, do things that other kids don’t
Weaknesses: Maybe ACT, definitely SAT and Subject Tests
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/deferred/rejected: Maybe because I live in St. Louis and there aren’t many applicants. Also idk I like to think I’m intelligent
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/deferred/rejected: No where

Reflection
No complaints about my test scores and grades, but I do wish i stacked up a lot more on my EC’s. Other than that I think my application was all that I could have done with my ability. I tried my best, and that’s what counts I guess.

Strengths: Grades, standardized test scores, and my chem awards.
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: Nothing in particular- I guess my common app was pretty interesting, and I talked a lot about my passion for energy in my why Penn essay.
Weaknesses: EC’s were really weak, and my complete joke of a literature SAT II score.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/deferred/rejected: My Chem awards were pretty good, as were my grades. I think my common app really said a lot about my personality though.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/deferred/rejected: Deferred MIT
The most unique thing in your application:
