****OFFICIAL UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA CLASS OF 2019 ED RESULTS THREAD****

After reading this thread numerous times during my college search experience, I feel like it’s time to give back as these have really helped me (and I certainly wished there had been more nursing applicant profiles!). With that said, however, I will be pretty general to protect my identity.

Hooks:
I am a first generation immigrant and college, father was an illegal immigrant. He died of cancer when I was in 6th grade. My mother does not speak any English, I had to take care of the family business and my mother since then. We used my father’s health insurance money to pay for my first year at Boarding School but was kicked out because we can’t afford the next year. I then moved to the East Coast from California with my mother and my first Sophomore year I had a lot of family issues. Second Sophomore year a prep school gave me a scholarship to attend, and there I strived as you can see. My years before boarding school I lived in the ghetto (literally) and thats why I did not do so well at boarding school. Sophomore year 1 had a lot of family issues.
I am also fluent in Mandrain and Cantonese. Almost there in Spanish.
My school is a feeder to Penn sending 10+ kids annually out of about 100.
I am also a Philadelphia city resident which helps a lot.

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/deferred/rejected:tulane full scholarship, michigan, fordham, dartmouth all accepted
The most unique thing in your application:

@kobeballsohard‌
I’m confused. How could you be accepted into both Penn and Dartmouth; they are both early decision schools.

@desie1 - I don’t want to speak for @kobeballsohard but he is posting as a recruited athlete. Not sure if he was recruited at all the schools listed or if he formally applied, but it is routine to get an admissions pre-read for acceptability if you are an athlete long before you ever actually apply. I’m guessing that’s what Dartmouth did for him and told him that he would be accepted if he applied and remained a recruited athlete by that particular coach. Perhaps he will post and clarify.

Decision: Accepted - SEAS (Questbridge Match. late to the party! Got busy with school work)
Objective:

SAT I (breakdown): Superscore 2220 (CR 700, M 800, W 720)

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Math League & Math Honor Society (President), NHS, Science League, Girls State (Girls Nation Alternate), years of taking art, National Social Studies Honor Society (founder… so proud), and a bunch of little things
Job/Work Experience: Caricature Artist at six flags yay!
Volunteer/Community service: Local library stuff and NHS. Pathetic hours to say the least compare to my peers.
Summer Activities: Girls State! Then I worked like everyday.
Essays: Common app essay is a little bland, even though it was a great topic. Supplement essay is ON POINT. I talked about a upenn professor I have been stalking… I mean following his work for a very long time and my eagerness to work in that environment.
Teacher Recommendation: My two favorite teacher. My AP chem teacher (10/10) is my mentor and best friend who has always been here for me. I have no doubt in my mind that she wrote a fantastic recommendation. My AP Spanish teacher admires my determination and it was probably a 8/10,
Counselor Rec: She knows me really well, but it was probably a very generic recommendation.
Additional Rec:
Interview: AMAZING. She is also a First-generation Chinese who came here in her teens. She is so sweet and understanding. Even though the interview was only 30 minutes via skype, we had so many similarities. She even sent me a card and penn sweatshirts after I texted her that I got accepted. She is an absolute joy to be around.

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Aha, here we go. First Gen. I came here from China a little more than 4 years ago knowing only a dozen words. I have worked really really hard to learn English (I got 5 on AP lang man) and Spanish too. Moving here was very hard for my parents because of the language barrier. That probably is one of my biggest motivation to make them proud.

Reflection

Strengths: Recommendation, Class Rank, Compelling background story, Interview
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: That I will work very very hard to get where I want to be. Even if I am ten steps behind everyone, I will run when they rest (My motto for the past few years trying to catch up and outrun everyone.)
Weaknesses: Mediocre SAT and extracurriculars; essays were not too great.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/deferred/rejected: Hard work pays off.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/deferred/rejected: I didn’t get into Princeton, Yale, and Stanford which are ranked higher on my match. I got accepted in November to Rutgers Pharmacy.
The most unique thing in your application: the whole came to US a few years ago thing, and the fact I learned to speak decent Spanish even when I am still learning English. There is nothing you can’t accomplish. If you are reading this, please remember that along your journey people are going to tell you that you can’t do something because they can’t do it. Don’t mind them. Keep on dreaming!!! One day you will be standing on top and they will be wondering why that’s not them up there.

Essays:
Common App: 9.5/10
I spent weeks trying to come up with a topic for my personal statement, then one day it just came to me. It was very personal, and there was a lot of voice in it. I also had a very strong opening and closing.
Penn supplement: 9/10
I did a lot of research on the school and definitely showed that in my writing. I also made it personal which I think was the most important part.
Teacher Recommendation: 9/10
Both were quite strong. My english teacher who adores me is a brilliant women who wrote a stunning rec. She actually let me read it and it was so dazzling. I didn’t see the second one from my bio teacher but he told me he put some pretty good things. He is also a really smart guy so I’m sure it was great.

Counselor Rec: 9/10.
My counselor is also my vice principal and was my English teacher last year. We also had a very good relationship and she knew how hard I’ve worked to get into this school so I’m sure hers was great as well.
Additional Rec:n/a
Interview: 7/10
My interview wasnt bad at all, but I found it hard to talk to my interviewer. I couldn’t really make him laugh at all and it just kinda seemed like a questionnaire thing. We didn’t have much of a real conversation. However, I think it helped that we were both asian, and I went to the same high school as his daughter.

Reflection

Strengths:
-essays: made them both very personal and got them revised by several teachers
-extracurriculars: team sports and visual arts
-recommendations
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself:
I really tried to emphasize my participation and leadership in team sports and visual arts. I feel that although everyone who applies to the Ivies is very well rounded, a lot are focused a lot of music or individual sports.
Weaknesses:
-test scores
-rigorousness of course (not in IB diploma)
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/deferred/rejected: I think I was accepted because of my essay. I was very honest and it was very personal. It really showed that I was well-rounded and hard working and definitely showed my personality.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/deferred/rejected: didn’t apply anywhere else
The most unique thing in your application: I’m Canadian, in a bunch of team sports and recognized for my visual arts.

Summer Activities: Statistics class at community college for the heck of it. Visited campus
Essays:
Why Penn: 9/10 My essay was very unique to Penn, I think I truly captured how much I love Penn in my essay and how Wharton was the only place to give me the education and experience I desired. Also made it very pre-professional
CommonApp Essay: Tbh idk how to rank this, talked about being hispanic and it was a heavy subject, it was more of a hit or miss but I guess it worked out because I got in. Really focused on my goals to be a leader and image for hispanic women everywhere, very powerful. Controversy existed in the stereotypes I denoted.
Teacher Recommendation: APUSH teacher: Probably pretty good, really likes me as a student. CALC teacher: Pretty good. I’ve had him for two years now, told me it was very easy for him to write it and he focused on my work ethic.
Counselor Rec: Amazing, I have the closest connection to him than anyone at my school. Knows me better than anyone on campus, like I’ve cried in his office multiple times.
Additional Rec: none
Interview: Pretty good, things didn’t come out the way I wanted them to with some things due to nerves but she was really impressed with my “Why Penn” answer, the interview lasted over an hour, and conversation got very casual and lighthearted as she started talking to me about the party scene and local bars/clubs

Reflection

Strengths:
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: Being Hispanic definitely gave me an edge (very represented throughout my app: counselor rec focused on it, NHRP, common app essay), pretty rare for a hispanic to have a 4.0 UW GPA so that was a hook. I had a good amount of work experience centered around business.
Weaknesses: SAT score, SAT II score, not many leadership positions, not as many AP classes as I might’ve liked to take, very average awards, not much involvement in the community whoops

Essays:

Common App (10/10): Talked about my life as an abandoned child and how I crossed the border illegally to reunite with my mother. Extremely sad/tear-jerker, shocked the teacher who proofread my essay.
Penn Supp. (8.5/10): Spot on. Discussed how I want to be a doctor but I am also interest in languages and Penn has a class that teaches medical terminology in Spanish, which would help me aid Spanish-speaking community (and professionally communicate with their doctors).

Teacher Recommendation:

  1. 8/10: French teacher may not be very original (last year she asked us for ideas for her to write in a student’s recommendation letter as she was doing it during our french class!), BUT I am one of her favorite students because I skipped a year of French, so I wanted her to tell Penn how I was able to handle that.
  2. 8/10: English teacher was chosen because I figured English teachers have the ability to write better, she has known me for three years (taught me in two, her husband in the other). I don’t know what she could have talked about except things like overcoming the language barrier (accent) and improving myself in a second language.
Counselor Rec: No idea. She knows me, and she knows my story of freshman year when I started at the bottom (all level 3 classes) and ended up going up the ladder (going to level 2, then Honors for all the classes that offered it). Then how I had to double up in maths and sciences to catch up to my more-intellectual peers the following year.
    Additional Rec: Nope.

Interview: Over the phone. It was okay. Not great, but not bad either. It seemed a little robotic. She extensively answered my first question about Penn and then started to finish the conversation before I could ask another question, but she called me back a week later after the acceptance and was really nice and offered advice.

Essays (rating 1-10, details): 8-10 I think my Common App essay was fantastic, and other people have told me the same. I used the “describe a place where you’re perfectly content” prompt and wrote about waking up early for Jazz Band juxtaposed that with how it has helped me grow into a leader. I also wrote in the additional comments section explaining the sharp contrast between my freshman year grades and the rest of high school.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: 10. My Latin teacher whom I’m very fond of and is also fond of me wrote this one.
Teacher Rec #2: 7 or 8. This one came from my junior year math teacher, and math was really not my thing…
Counselor Rec: 10. My college counselor knew me pretty well, and always talked about how seriously she took ED letters. We had a great relationship so I’m sure it was fantastic.
Additional Rec: N/A
Interview: Penn interview went well (at least I thought).

  • Common App: “Transition into adulthood” prompt, wrote about how my dreams were blatantly shot down by a certain someone in my family when I was a child, that I would not succeed and how I was told I would starve, and that I became an adult when I devoted myself to proving him wrong and actually felt in control of my life and deciding what path I would walk for myself

Teacher Recommendation: My history teacher from freshman and sophomore year and my Extended Essay mentor who I believe I have the closest relationship with, my English teacher for three years of high school… Did extremely well in both of their classes, but did not get to read any of their letters.

Message to future applicants:
Penn was my dream school, I knew that since the end of my sophomore year. When I applied ED, I met only doubt and half-hearted hope and support from my peers (as one might expect when applying to an Ivy League school with pretty low test scores). My guidance counselor even once proposed the idea of applying ED to a different school that I “statistically” had better chances of getting in. No one expected me to be accepted (and for a time, I didn’t think so either), so beating the odds and getting accepted made decision day the happiest day of my life. Honestly, ANYTHING can happen, so just put your best foot forward and good luck!
(Also, if your scores are low like mine: standardized testing isn’t everything!!)

Essays:
Why Penn: very similar to my uchicago and columbia essays since I value the same characteristics ( I say a 7/8)
Common App: didn’t think much of it at the time but it hasn’t gotten me rejected from anywhere so yay! It talks about my struggle with languages both internally and with my community questioning my desire to study other cultures. Talks about what I learned about myself and the world. I’d say 9/10
Huntsman: reused my gtown topic and added on more information about economics and then tied it back to huntsman~! 8/9
Teacher Recommendation: ap spanish teacher from sophomore year ( junior class but I fought to take it, and it showed my maturity and love of languages. She wrote a beautiful letter) 8/9
Counselor Rec: she knows me well since I work in her office every day haha. She touched about my special circumstances and passions 8
Additional Rec: APUSH/APWH teacher. Not my facorite rec in terms of length but the content was very touching 7
Interview: I thought it went horribly because he stared me down and questioned my favorite book ( Candide) and then I kind of said my nick name which involves North Korea and yeah I didn’t think it was so hot. Turned out I was the best applicant that he interviewed that year o.o so yay? 9?
Other don’t think I submitted anything unless they looked at my QB app
