[] Summer Activities: Shad Valley, Internship, Consulting Work
[] Essays: My Common App general one I really, really, really liked. I thought that it really showed who I am and how I evolved. I thought that it really incorporated the whole me. 10/10
Why Penn: It was kind of conventional but I think the two essays complement each other well. I really liked my ending. Uhm. Other than that, it wasn’t like super amazing or anything. Probably an 8/10
[] Teacher Recommendation: Both should be amazing. Both really like me and have a track record for giving great recs. Plus, I read the recs they wrote me last year. If they were anything like that, they should be awesome.

[] Interview: I thought it went really well. Uhm lasted for about an hour. My interviewer and I had a lot of similarities. We really bonded.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Being from Canada
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I didn’t apply anywhere else in the states for the early round. Did not apply anywhere in Canada either. Accepted to St Andrews in Scotland and a likely for Oxford (I was told to “expect an offer after Christmas”). Rejected from LSE for Economic History and Economics.

[/ul]**General Comments: **
I’m actually, surprisingly, not that upset. Very disappointed of course, but it isn’t the end of the world scenario I was envisioning.
And uhm, to all you future applicants, good luck. Be true to yourself and don’t be afraid to share. That really is the key to getting in. And in the end if it’s meant to be then it’s meant to be. Everything will work out for everyone in the end.

Teacher Recommendation #2: AP Biology and Science research advisor, she knows me really well and chose me as president after popular vote and she is also my teacher. We have fun talks about politics too so she put that in there so I think it was really good.

Counselor Rec: She likes me (well she liked me when she wrote it before college apps and I drove her crazy haha), but she kinda straight up told me I wouldn’t get in, but I don’t think would write anything less than a glowing rec.

Additional Info/Rec: Didn’t submit

Interview: REALLLLYY AWESOMMME – she went to my school and so did her 3 kids and she said everything I want to do and am like is perfect for Penn and that I would do really well there and we had a whole conversation about what it was like for her to be the only asian in our school at the time and all about her kids and what they’re doing now and how 2/3 kids went to Penn and it was so great I was so happy. And then I went home to watch tv and I decided to watch Transformers for whatever reason and like half of it was set at Penn I started crying I was like THIS IS A SIGN FROM THE LORD, but yeah it was awesome :)

Writing (Subject, 1-10 rating, details):
Why Penn: 9; about my visit, super personal and passionate, dropped a little humor in there but I had a hard time saying everything I love about Penn without it seeming kinda listy, but hopefully it turned out nicely.

Any dual-degree program essays: Nope – CAS
CommonApp Essay: 9; transition from childhood to adulthood, it was funny and showed a lot about me as person and how i’ve been like that since a young age and how I’ve changed over time and how things have affected me and changed me etc, etc.

I’m not a great writer, but these turned out surprisingly well because I wrote like 45 drafts for each one and showed all my family members etc. My friend didn’t like my commonapp (even though like everyone else I showed did, but this is my best friend so I think she would be more honest with me) but I still sent them in because I was proud of my work :)

Other Factors: Uhmm I have AD/HD but I only dropped it in my interview … but yeah I didn’t say it anywhere else because I didn’t know whether or not that could be used against me in some way. I hope this might have explained my struggle with my grades instead of showing that I have issues.

I’m really upset right now and I didn’t expect to get accepted at all, but I was hoping for at least a deferral. But good Luck everyone else!!! You all deserve happiness, great schools, and success in life – I wish you all the best!

Reflection
Strengths: Yes, I lift. jk from a rural area and a small school where no one ever goes ivy except for one girl two years ago. Two of my friends were deferred from Princeton
Weaknesses: Probably dead lifts. White boy middle class (I honestly don’t think any of that matters) haha I could be a better writer, take more classes (my school doesn’t have a lot) I said a lot of stuff, but didn’t back it up. For example, I produce electronic music – I should have submitted a song.
Were else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted: McDaniel, hopefully University of Michigan, hopefully Maryland, hopefully Drexel.
What would you have done differently?: Submitted my app sooner, gone through high school like I was trying to get in an Ivy. (I decided like 6 months ago ahaha)

Overview: Reading I was deferred was painful, but I’m like super happy right now I am gonna do everything I can to get in because Penn is the best school ever. I guess being deferred just means I get the 5:00 excitement all over again! Congrats to everyone who got in, I feel ya to my homies who got deferred, and I am really sorry to everyone rejected. I could not have handled that. Just go to Harvard; it’s second best ;)

[ *] Teacher Recommendation #2: AP Physics teacher. Should be decent.
[ *] Counselor Rec: I know my counselor on a fairly personal level. I’m sure he had good things to say.

[ *] Interview: Interviewer said I was very mature for my age (although I find it hard to interpret the connotation of this comment) and have a lot to contribute to Penn through my personal experiences. I think we both enjoyed the conversation very much.
[ b]Writing:**[ list]
[ ] Common App Main: I wrote about all the countries I have lived in due to my father continuously switching jobs and how the experiences affected me. I tried to discretely weave my interests, observations, and social/ethnic commentary into the narrative. (8/10)
[ ] Why Penn: I wrote about Penn’s emphasis on interdisciplinary education and international level opportunities. I tried to keep it entertaining and informative by integrating short anecdotes about my travels around world.
[ b]Other

[ *] State (if domestic applicant): Micigan
[ *] Country (if international applicant):

[ *] Gender: Male
[ ] Income Bracket: Around 50k (I didn’t qualify for Questbridge because it was 70k last year.)
[ ] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I don’t know if this counts for anything, but I attend an elite prep school in NYC freshman year before moving to Michigan. I have a hard time believing they will treat me as an east coast applicant, so this either destroyed me or helped me in some way.
[ ] Strengths: Don’t lie. I know someone out their is thinking “this kid didn’t even have a chance.” I appreciate the sincerity.
[ ] Weaknesses: Test scores, ECs, etc…
[ ] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I applaud the admission officers for their fine work. I didn’t deserve to get in an they clearly saw right through my pity ruse. I’m glad I wasn’t granted placement in a position that could have been potentially stripped away from a more qualified applicant.
[ ] What would you have done differently?: I should have probably taken the standardized exams before all those family problems started intruding half way through my junior year. The PSAT went great since my head was still clear back then.

[ b]Other Factors:

Teacher Recommendation #2: 8/10, hilarious Psychology teacher who wrote about how I was a disappointment as a student cause I only ever brought him one coffee and it was cold
Counselor Rec: Should be good, knows me well, I’m well known in my school
Additional Info/Rec: None
Interview: Mixed feelings… Interviewer was a little rude and swore a lot, rolled his eyes when I talked about my favorite Latin quote, but laughed a lot when I talked about how much I’d love Penn’s foodtrucks

Writing (Subject, 1-10 rating, details):
Have no idea how to rate these, so just gonna give an overview
Why CAS: about my love for collecting hotel toiletries throughout my travels, and how it relates to linguistics, I decode the various languages on shampoo bottles and stuff. And the pieces of Penn that relate to my collection, kinda quirky but I thought it was good

Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development): perhaps from an under-recruited area, pretty sure no one else in my whole province applied to Penn ED

Reflection
Strengths: ECs, essays, recs
Weaknesses: SAT, SAT II, course rigor (no APs/Honors, but weren’t offered at school and counselor said I took the Most Rigorous Available)
Were else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: nowhere yet, waiting on a few
What would you have done differently?: Raised my SAT and SAT II! Seriously I think this was the ultimate killer, one look at my scores and I’m definitely not Penn material. I’d really hoped my passion for rural education and learning languages could have made up for it, though. Surprisingly, I’m not too disappointed because I guess I had already convinced myself I wasn’t going to get in previously. My school has never sent anyone to an Ivy League before, and McGill and Toronto are what my classmates pray for.

Other Factors: After browsing CC results boards for over 2 years, I have finally made my own. Just disappointed that the headline has to say Rejected!

@chancemaster12 - Don’t be bitter. UPenn probably saw promise in that other student from your school that they accepted - I’m sure it wasn’t solely because they had a 4.0 (plenty of people with less than a 4.0 get accepted to UPenn.) Live and let live.

@bigtimeseller232 That is not a deciding factor.

@bigtimeseller232 - YOU’RE** - and, get off his/her case. I hope you’re joking if you think that UPenn or any world class institution of such caliber would reject an applicant based solely on their performance (which was excellent, regardless) on a single subject test. Do you really think that admissions officers at one of the most prestigious universities on Earth really sit around and say things like; “Well this fellow right here got ONLY (cough) a 700 on the Math I subject test. Clearly this invalidates the rest of what is an incredibly competitive application. Definitely not ivy material.” Give me a break.
