Official Vanderbilt ED1 Class of 2020 Discussion Thread

How do we know if they come out earlier? Will they send us an email saying to check the portal, or will we just have to be checking? And @collegebobollege how early would they release them?

Hey guys I applied ED1 to Vandy. Do we get an email saying that the decisions are out? Or do we just have to check the portal?

@Pugs1798 typically they release at 5 pm CST and they have usually posted on the vandy blog the day before about the decisions being released!

Anyone here from colorado??

Who else has been checking their email and My VU App portal constantly?? The wait is agonizing!!

@waffledancerxox oh gosh yes I have been even though I know nothing will change yet

IMO, it is totally worth it…it can be a big mistake to apply to a bunch of top schools because they are top schools thinking that they will basically give interchangeable experiences (they are not created equally and do not even have the same exact academic strengths). Some of them are just VERY different from each other socially and academically (and thus some should be lumped together with a certain set of schools and others lumped with others despite any differences or similarity in rank). I’ve seen students show up to my alma mater thinking that a major existed that so obviously did not for example. It would make sense if it had been a major that is well-aligned with the other strong points of the school that were well-known, but I’m talking about engineering, for which it was obvious the school didn’t have it. To me, it was quite obvious that some students did not visit, and much less, did very little research about the school. There were also those surprised that the school “felt” a certain way because of its lack of Division 1 sports. That is non-sense! It does not take much research to uncover things like that. The additional research can make it worthwhile as you avoid falling into some of the traps of buying the rosy picture painted by the university’s tourguides and administrators (like when places like Emory or even Chicago tries to sell themselves as “work hard play hard” schools. Versus where? Funny because Virginia, Chapel Hill, and Vanderbilt all said the same thing? Perhaps an attempt to say: “we’re like them!” even though it isn’t true). Prospective students should be more cynical. You’re talking lots of money in most cases and 4 years of time.

Also, I’m not really talking stereotypes more so than actually exploring and researching the school beyond the simple tour or admissions brochures (I know we assume students and parents are smart enough to go the extra mile and they are, but do not assume that they do…there is that “love it first sight” thing that always concerns me where often folks are blown away by things like the amenities and beauty of the school along with whatever is being told by the tourguide). It isn’t that darned hard. Schools have student publications which are often revealing (grab one when available on a tour. Tells one what is going on and what topics are typically hot a school), you can take the time after a tour to actually talk to students not affiliated with the admissions office to ask about certain things (often students on these boards refer to the tourguides experience and demeanor which is nice and indicates the admissions office did a good job selecting them, but it is possible that they are not representative). University websites list majors available so you don’t have to just apply assuming that a top school either a) has or b) is good at “x”. Also, while many people do not transfer from top schools, that does not mean that all of those who chose not to transfer are having a more than “thrilled” experience overall. Many can learn to tolerate whatever situation to just get the prestigious degree and move on. But tolerance is not enjoyment or appreciation.

@collegebobollege tulane is my 2nd choice too and i got a scholarship as well  hopefully i’ll see you on campus either in nashville or new orleans!

@oonaquinn Tulane isn’t actually my second choice, it’s just my safety. I do really like it, but there’s a lot of schools farther up my list. Hope to see you in Nashville though haha

Decisions day is soooo close, and I honestly don’t know what I’m going to do. Either way, you should all go out to eat to either celebrate or not think about, whatever it may be

I have an event the night of the 11th so that’s going to be stressful (even if the results don’t come out then)

Same, so everyone’s going to be asking why I’m crying

December 11th is either going to be the best or worst day of my life I’m so nervous!

I’m glad they don’t defer, I wouldn’t be able to wait until April

I wonder what time on we will find out on Friday

People have been saying 5 PM CST but I’m not sure if that’s accurate

I’ve applied ED with a 4.2 and 35. If I don’t get in I will most likely stay in bed for a couple days. I’m not sure if I’ve ever wanted anything so much in my entire life.

There’s nothing that I want more in life than to get into Vanderbilt on Friday. There hasn’t been a single day in the past 2 years where I haven’t thought about admissions day at Vanderbilt, it’s my die hard dream school.

I also applied to Emory, Fordham, UC Berkeley and a state school as a safety, but I honestly don’t want to go anywhere other than Vandy. I have a relatively low GPA (3.994 W), but have literally everything else to get in. 33 composite ACT, right in the middle of their mid 50%, 36 Science, 33 reading, 33 english, 31 math, 10 writing. I wrote good essays, and I have have amazing EC’s, I work 20+ hours a week at a fine dining restaurant (one of the most acclaimed/expensive restaurants in my city), I’m an IT technician for an orthodox Jewish temple, (I’m also Jewish, which helps at Vandy), varsity captain for the tennis team, had a summer internship at UC Berkeley doing Bio-medical research and may be published in a paper on the results, am a tutor for a dyslexic middle schooler, have leadership roles in clubs and activities, and have amazing rec letters. My councilor has been the head of the guidance department at my school for 30 years (I go to a very diverse public highschool in a suburb where there are 7 councilors), and my councilor personally sends 15+ kids to Ivies every year, plus more to schools like Vanderbilt, Berkeley, Duke and so forth, and she said that I had 3 amazing rec letters, and one in particular was one of best rec letters she has read in her entire career. I had an outstanding alumni interview who said I was the most impressive kid she has ever interviewed, and so on. I also do the full IB diploma programme. Plus I met the admissions director for my state when she came and had a good conversation with her, and my councilor called the admissions office a few weeks ago just to express how much she thinks I should get in (schools like that know and respect her opinion because of her long track record). There are a few other things, but overall I want to think that I am very qualified to get in… except for my GPA. It’s below a 4.0 weighted. I’ve had extenuating circumstances and also learning disabilities which my councilor talked about in the rec letter, but at the end of the day, the main thing they look at is GPA and mine doesn’t even begin to compete, some people on here have a 3.8 or 3.9 unweighted. Can you guys chance me, realistically. The suspense is killing me, but I need to know, do I even have a chance with that GPA?

My question is: What passion did you write about in your essays? sports and clubs are great, internships are great, but what do you care about that you do outside of school? @Rittlemethis87

@Rittlemethis87 I’m Jewish and have a biomedical research internship too!
