[] Volunteer/Community service: 16 hrs at NYCares.
[] Summer Activities: See work experience and volunteer service
[] Essays: The Common App essay was really powerful. It discussed an important time in my life (too personal to mention on CC) and how I grew/learned from it. My Vassar Supp. essay was honsetly, kind of generic. I was passionate about what I said, don’t get me wrong, but I think that what I said is what everyone else said (I like the small size, special attention, 10:1 student-faculty ratio, etc). My Common App essay was definately the strongest of the two.
[] Teacher Recommendation: I’m pretty sure both recommendations were excellent.
[] Counselor Rec: See teacher recommendation.
[] Additional Rec: N/A
[] Interview: It was amazing! I honestly was a bit skeptical about it at first but I think the interview is what helped me to get accepted. Prior to the interview, I wasn’t really looking at Vassar as closely but after the interview, Vassar became one of my top choices.
[] Strengths: Essays, Interest, Interview and applying myself in HS.
[] Weaknesses: SAT scores,
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think I was admitted because of the strength of my application as a URM. No, I am NOT saying I was admitted because I am black, I just think that they admitted me because I am a strong URM candidate for Vassar. My application told a story and I am glad that Vassar loved that story.

I don’t know if anyone ever came upon this, but the following thread was about me and a mistake I made on my Vassar app. Ironically, Vassar was the only non-safety to which I was accepted… lol

[] Teacher Recs: One is phenomenal, the other’s pretty good.
[] Counselor Rec: Excellent.

I’m pumped. Really pumped. Vassar wasn’t my top choice, but it was definitely up there. I’m very happy to have been accepted here, despite my rather poor performance elsewhere in the college admissions process. 9:1 odds say that I’ll see you all next year!

Decision: ACCEPTED

Stats:
SAT I : 710 (CR); 700 (M); 720 (W)
SAT IIs: cant actually remember without looking…they were just okay if i recall
APs: US History (5). This year, I’m taking US Gov, Brit Lit, and Physics.

Job/Work Experience: Secretary at real estate agency

Essays (subject and responses): My Common App essay was about my love of black holes and relating it to the way I take on challenges. For “Why Vassar?,” I wrote about how I really didn’t know anything about Vassar until a family friend forced me to visit. I just wanted to get to NYC so I was upset we had to stop in the middle of nowhere, but we took the tour, and I feel in love.

Teacher Recs: One was pretty good (hard and strange AP physics teacher who teaches at the college level; he made us write our own recs and submit them to him just so he could show us what difficult work it is to write a rec for someone :stuck_out_tongue: ) Second was GREAT (AP english teacher who adores me and also went to vassar)

Counselor Rec: Excellent…we had to take personal interviews with her before she would write them for us, but she hit on a lot of details we wanted to include.

Applied on: wow that was a long time ago…lol

Hook (if any): I did all the extra stuff…my picture was a photo of me shark diving off the coast of the island I live on, the extra “essay” was actually a pair of purple pants that i bought at walmart and i wrote my essay/poem on that (which i kinda want back to wear for myself :stuck_out_tongue: ) and i sent in the music supplement. Also, the great recs probably helped. And my location…there aren’t a lot of people from Hawaii at Vassar from what i understand…

[ b]Location/Person:**[ list]
State or Country: Hawaii
School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): Competitive, episcopalian, all girls, private

[/list]General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:
I’m actually pretty stoked…I was reading everyone else’s stats and it’s amazing how smart everyone else is! I can’t wait to surround myself with such people. I only applied to 6 schools, all competitive and on the east coast. Of the 6, i was rejected at one, wait listed at two, and accepted to 3. I received scholarship to all three, but Vassar is giving me the most (half tuition). Most likely will end up here. Its far away, but Im excited!!! :D

(for my son)
