Would anyone be willing to post the wording of his or her deferral letter? Some universities, such as the University of Michigan, word deferral letters in a manner alluding to how close the student was to early acceptance. Knowing whether Villanova does this as well could provide more clarity to the state of uncertainty that is early action deferral than that of unreliable comparison from a small sample size of GPAs and test scores.

The committee on admission has completed a careful and holistic review of your application for Villanova University’s Early Action program.
This year, the office of University Admission experienced the largest pool of early action applicants in the university’s history. While there were several aspects of your credentials that impressed our committee, we have decided to defer your application for consideration under our traditional Regular Decision program. I would like to make you aware that the majority of our incoming freshman class will be drawn from the regular decision program.
Our decision in no way reflects upon your achievements to this point, but rather is related to an extremely competitive pool or early action candidates. Let me personally assure you that you will be given every consideration for Regular Decision admission to Villanova and that our decision will be forthcoming in late march.

The deferral letter was a bit more positive than the one I had received from Fordham. Hope this helps!
