Anyone have any experience with official visits, especially in the smaller sports? What goes on? Are prospects often faced with pressure to drink or party? I've heard stories how in one case a prospect ran into some trouble for drinking with their host students, but they are also expected to fit in and are evaluated by host students for how well they do. That places the prospect in a tough spot. Anyone have any experience with this?

Finally, when do prospects normally get invited for official visits. I hear they occur primarily in Sept/Oct of senior year (again, for the smaller sports). Thanks for any input.

My son was a recruit for a smaller sport and went on official visits to top academic schools. He told me recently that the official visits are all about alcohol. Just to warn you. He had a LOT of fun. There is a tradition at some schools that the official visit is where the recruit acquires a fake ID, by paying a hefty some to his "hosts".

for the official rules about how many visits and when I'd suggest going to www.ncaa.org (differs by sport and division) ... CC is a great place to get stories of actual experiences (like WildChild's)

It really depends on the school. If you're being recruited by a top D1 football program they're going to make sure you have tons of fun so that you chose their school over any others.

But theoretically an official visit is time for you to go to a practice, meet the rest of the team, talk to the coach, and see the school, with an overnight stay either in a dorm or a hotel room paid for by the school.

Most schools will have already contacted potential recruits (ie rising seniors) about official visits. Only in rare cases (when a school doesn't get players they had counted on in the ED round, etc) would officials be offered later in the year.

Thanks for the input. When do the invites normally go out (if there is a normal)? My D heard from a number of coaches last spring that mentioned official visits but it's been silent since then. Are the actual visits usually in Sept and when do they start to make the appts? Thx

She should contact THEM. They may not think that she's interested. And unless you make sure a coach remembers you, they'll move on to other kids.
