Official WashU ED 2017 Discussion and Results Thread

I still find it hard to believe…why would they do that?

I see. Does anybody know when ED applicants will be finding out?

Well no one really knows what goes on behind the doors of the admissions office. Maybe the RD applicants were just very strong candidates? I wouldn’t get too hung up about it.

Most people here believe that decisions will be released Friday December 7th, based on decision dates from previous years. I’m guessing we’ll all be receiving emails in the coming week about the actual date.

Good luck everyone, I’m sure you’re all just as nervous as I am.

I dont get it… why would wustl accept RD students earlier than the ED decision date…
lol maybe we all should’ve applied for RD…

A few thoughts based on last year:

 1. you will not receive an email in advance on when the ED acceptances will come out.
 2. you will find out first by checking on your pathway account - Friday, Dec 7th 5:00 PM CT
 3. you will get some decision when it is posted - acceptance, deferred, wait listed or denied
 4. I believe the acceptances were posted over a few hours - don’t panic if you dont have anything when others received their notice; you will get some notification
 5. within a few days (probably the next day) you will get an email; a few days after that you will get a package in the mail with your contract and other stuff.

My only guess on RD applicants receiving acceptance early is that it is related to an athletic team. If it is true, I wouldn’t worry about it - it has no impact on you.

btw does anyone know whats the last acceptable SAT date for WashU regular decision?

When were early decision notifications posted in the past few years?

My S applied ED. For whatever reason, he hasn’t visited the school or had any interview there. He did, however, schedule a campus visit and interview on Dec 7. Will this be too late to show his interest since ED result will be posted on that day according to this thread? To make it worse, he is thinking about to change his visit date to next Spring. He told me he would like to have an overnight experience and talk to more students there. Due to busy exam schedule, he didn’t get the overnight permission on Dec 6-7. He also thinks it would be hard to chat with students freely in the next two weeks. Anyway, the time is not right for his visit. But I know WUSTL is his dream school… Will this (not visiting school) impact the ED outcome? Are there other ways to show his interest? Any advice please … Thanks!

How big a deal is it to make the trip (how far away do you live)?
Goal#1 get accepted ED - I am assuming his Dec 7th trip was scheduled through Admissions - I would keep that - they know he is coming; if he cancelled it before they make decisions it could be a negative (they may think he isn’t as excited).

Visiting in the Spring is an “I would like” from your son. It is after the decision. What impact will it have? A nice to have - if you can afford it, have him visit then also. I would suggest the Summer Weekend offered to enrolled students before an overnight in the Spring.

You said it is his dream school then focus on goal #1.

Other ideas - talk to his Admissions rep (assigned on Pathway). Ask if there is alumni in your area that he can meet with. Fyi, the interview is overrated - its purpose is to provide a forum for the applicant and the applicant is not evaluated.

Okay, so we know that last year, 2011, WashU notified people of their ED decision December 9th, a Friday. Does anybody know when they notified people in 2010? @onecot59 I agree with you, but why do you think that it will necessarily be on the 7th? This year is also leap year, so maybe they could push it back to the 14th.

Here’s my advice. You can either decide to take it or not, it’s your choice. But I’ve been seeing these threads for years and here’s what I’ve determined is (in my opinion) the best option:

Just stop worrying. Stop checking this site. Stop trying to figure out when the results will be released. College is a huge deal, especially early decision, but there’s not a damn thing that you can do about it anymore. You’ve sent off your application; everything the admissions office will ever get to know about you (at least until you may be deferred and send them more materials) is already in their hands. No matter what happens between now and the time they release decisions, there is nothing more you can do to influence your decision.

So why does it matter when you find out? Sure, it’s always nice to know and just get it out of the way. But nothing will change your decision or the release date. Why bother yourself by frantically checking to find out when the results will be released? You’re just stressing yourself out as you approach your first semester final exams. Keep in mind that those exams could be very influential for your future should you be deferred or rejected from Wash U. They could influence your regular decision application at Wash U and many other schools you’ll (unfortunately) have to apply to. Best to maintain your composure and focus on high school. You’re not a second semester senior yet.

So my advice to you is just stop worrying. Rest assured that you’ll know before your Christmas break, and there’s no need to keep checking up until that point. You’ll get an email when the decisions are up.

Of course, nobody will take this advice. But if by some miracle you actually do, I’m sure you’ll thank me sometime down the road.

RaVNzCRoFT, I mostly agree. The email I received on my ED acceptance last year was at least 1 day after it was posted on Pathway. It does matter when you find out because college is a huge deal. Since it has been a few years for you the desire to kwow may not be as fresh. I was excited that all my effort was rewarded and relieved that I got in the school i was most interested in (by a lot).

Max, in 2010 the decisions came out at 5:00 PM CT on Friday, Dec 10th. I know because I was in your shoes last year and some of us looked back at the 2010 thread.

omg…i submitted my ED application about a month ago and I have managed to push it out of my mind so far but now it’s really hit me…i’m soooo nervous…wash u is my dream school…i really hope i get in

are you sure about the ED decisions being released on Dec. 7th? I read on their website: “Decision letters will be mailed on December 15, 2012. Regrettably, we cannot release admission decisions over the phone.” So do they release the decision on the pathway first?

is there anything else u need to know?

Onecot59 -
you mentioned that the admission responses will be one of the following: acceptance, deferred, wait listed or denied. Are you sure wait listed is a possibility for ED. Why would they not just defer you?

I thought wait list and defer were the same thing? Or is there a difference?

I honestly don’t know how I’m going to continue my college application process if I don’t get into this school. Anyone on the same boat?

mominfl- I’m pretty certain onecot just mis-typed. I’m fairly certain WashU does not waitlist anyone in the ED pool.
(That being said, I’d imagine if you’re deferred you can later learn you’re waitlisted come March).

jgli95 - no, they’re not. Waitlisted means you may or may not get in (most likely not), but you won’t hear from the school until after the May 1st date. Deferred is for the ED pool. It’s a “we like you, but would rather wait to look at your application with the RD pool, so you’re not going to know until March.” If WashU defers your application, the ED binding contract is no longer applicable (ie you are not obligated to attend if you get a March acceptance).

Ah, thanks for clearing that up. Never really knew the difference. Of course I hope that I won’t have to become familiar with that term come Dec 7! (or whenever decisions are released)

Good luck everyone, I’ve been checking the WUSTL pathway constantly. Seems like “Your application for admission is complete! Please check back often for important updates.” will never change!

Sorry for the confusion. Deferred with ED and Waitlisted with RD.
Last year about 500 applicants were accepted ED (1/3 of total class).

Hi everyone. I too applied ED to WashU. I won’t bore any of you with my stats. I’ve been looking back at previous threads and all of them have had decisions notified sooner than the 15th date. Whether that is this Friday, I don’t know.
Furthermore, does anyone else find it strange WashU doesn’t relase ED stats? In my opinion that could mean 1) ED acceptance rate is higher and the school doesn’t want people applying just for the statistical advantage or 2) The acceptance rate is lower and the school doesn’t want to discourage applicants from applying. I hope its the first one!
