Official "we don't have a chance" thread but we still love Brown!

Okay, so I’ve been reading people’s threads about how they don’t think they have a chance when clearly there SAT scores speak for themselves. I’m not saying that anyone can accurately predict what your chances are but if you score in the middle 50 % range of a colleges admitted pool, including having the high gpa and great extracurriculars, as well as a great package, chances are you have a better chance then another applicant who’s scores are low (me) and gpa is not that high (me) but have great extracurriculars and everything else is fine.

so here it goes, this is a chance thread for all those applicants that REALLY think they don’t stand a chance. to display what I mean these are my stats:

why brown essay- Talked about my experience at Summer@Brown and observations of a friend who goes to Brown (how he's intellectually matured, etc)

...No chance. Especially compared to other students at my school who have applied.

I'll join the no-chance crew :)

Location: Canada
Gender: male
Race: African and Indian
School: Catholic
GPA: 4.0 UW (converted from Canadian system)
Rank: top few % out of 220
SAT I: CR 580 M 720 W 670 - I hate reading/didn't prepare well enough at all, and i hate tests like that. Math is my favourite subject, but i've never hated it as much as i did during SAT.. ran out of time in sections in all subjects, even tho i had very few wrong :(
SAT IIs: Just did math I and II, hoping for 780+ on each.. not sure though

I have a solid essay, and great recs, and in terms extra curriculars i'm a varsity athlete in 3 sports (2 outside of school). I'm good, but fall just short of being recruited so it kinda sucks.

My SAT I is gonna kill me... i know it :D but im keeping some hope anyways

lilygraces- I think you have a chance : )
never compare yourself to others, bc we're all supper unique! Have hope! : )

100Canadian- again, you do fall in the middle 50 % range! I have confidence you'll be pretty competitive, I mean I don't think I've ever met an African and Indian canadian before (lol) pretty diverse! Hey at least you play a sport, I love volleyball and soccer and track. But the closest thing to a sport I can say I do well is cheerleading, which I never list on my EC's bc some people tell me it doesn't count! Lol. Soo not true! You need a great bod to be a cheerleader (hehe-lol)

Both of you, enjoy senior year & hopefully Brown can see past our numbers! lol
:)

Haha thanks superwoman :)
Ya i have the diversity thing going for me, but the 580 is scaring me cuz only 10% of admitted applicants have that score :( but thanks for ur confidence haha
And if i was a cheerleader I'd put it on my list, and ur right about the body thing i guess haha :P
Anyways good luck!

I'll join the club since my Critical Reading score is crap.

@ 100Canadian

i'm pretty sure math 1 and math 2 do not count as 2 seperate subject tests

Fb lalaland are u from ottawa by any chance

And bicyclekick they do... Well if they count at harvard im guessing they do at brown. Plus i didnt have many other options anyways lol

No. Vancouver, BC.

fblalaland- dont compare yourself to the other students. there must be something that makes you more unique then the others. soo just kick back & relaxx. lol. did you have an interview yet?

mcvcm92- 202 is really good for PSAT especially first time soo with prep im sure you can go up significantly also, try to take the ACT and go see Brown. Bc its really hard to apply to schools youve never seen..well for me it is. Good luck though!

I really don't think you guys have bad stats... though I know I do... my gpa itself is only a 3.51 UW and I rank 181/750. My SAT I is only a 1910 (1960 superscored). But I do have a 31 on the ACT. Besides my gpa and rank, everything else is pretty much okay...

BUT there are many people at my school who also really want to go to Brown who also applied so I truly think my chance of getting admitted is close to nothing.

Location: Maryland
Gender: Male
Race: White
School: Public
GPA: 3.68 UW, 4.1W, slight upward trend
Top 10%
ACT: 29
SAT I: 640M, 630CR, 620W
SAT IIs: Much worse than anyone here; I didn't submit them.
ECs: Not great or bad, I guess.
Essays: I thought they were REALLY good. My opening sentence to common app was, "I had my first encounter with a pedophile at age 10."
Recs: I read them and they were very nice.
APs taken: us government, biology, english lang, psychology, chemistry, english lit, and calc AB.

I think I'll do reallllllly well on my interview.

xSteven- im sorry to hear about your encounter. i had a similar horrifying experience with a stalker last summer who tried to rape me, but thank the Lord i got away. i hope you do well on the interview! sometiwhen negative things in my life occur I always turn it into something positive, especially since theyve made me a stronger person. again, its unfortunate things like that could ever occur to a child : (
Good Luck!

Um, good job taking over this thread when she was talking about bad stats.

As for my essays, they actually were pretty creative. My "Why Brown?" short essay was a rap/poem, and my other Brown essay ("tell us about an interesting learning experience, book, project, etc..yada yada) was about Hamlet and its various interpretations...I even mentioned "The Lion King," haha.

Haha, but still no shot. They would only give me a chance if I got to fully explain that 70% of seniors go straight to community college, I'm the first AP scholar in my school's forty-year history, and I was the first sophomore to ever take an AP class. I did explain this to my interviewer, though.
