[/ul]General Comments: This is my first post on CC. I’m one of those people who occasionally read the forums, but never post anything because there has never been anything I wanted to share. However, I really wanted to get my stats out there to show people that being “accepted” to a prestigious college like Wellesley is possible for those who come from a poor background. Rarely do I ever see people (from my school at least) who attend a selective private school and are struggling financially. You just need to have the determination to succeed, despite the many obstacles you will face. I promise, it’ll all be worth it in the long run. I’m really excited about my “acceptance” to Wellesley, especially because it’s such a great school with amazing people. In addition, Wellesley offers a lot of financial aid for those who need it. I know this for a fact because my sister is a senior at Wellesley, and she has been receiving great financial aid for the past 4 years. I hope this was helpful to some of you! PM me if you have any questions.

[] Job/Work Experience:
Internship this spring at a nonprofit that fits with my interests, I’m the “social media and marketing” intern.
[] Volunteer/Community service:
My club has done a lot of community work registering voters and lobbying our administration for various things (that’s what I wrote my common app essay on!), but hard to quantify.
Amigos de las Americas- Lived in Latin America for 6 weeks this summer, training is usually three or four times a month, and this year I’m a trainer so I train new volunteers!
[] Summer Activities:
Oops I guess I kind of said that up there… Lived in a really rural village Latin America for 6 weeks as an Amigos volunteer.
[] Essays: Basically I wrote it about how through my club I had stood up to administration and advocated for something I thought was important at my school, and made change. Implied message= * insert hippie voice * One person can change the world, man! I got good feedback, so I think it was good… personally I’ve read it so many times that I no longer can tell haha. My Wellesley supplement was pretty good…the first sentence contained the phrase “Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry”, so I was pleased.
[] Teacher Recommendation: One was from my gov teacher who loooves me, so I think that one is awesome…the other from my Spanish teacher and I don’t know how good that one was because she only had me for one year, but she really liked me and thought I was super curious intellectually, so yay!
[] Counselor Rec: Solid to very good.
[] Additional Rec:

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Test scores, which showed that my aptitude in more humanities types subjects which is what I’m studying, political advocacy in my extracurriculars, and good recommendations.
[] Weaknesses:
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Tough to say… after stalking some forums about EE results, I’m not really sure, it seems to be such a crapshoot! I think my overall app is just driven and sends a clear message that I’m into politics and advocacy! Colleges are into that, I believe. Also, I demonstrated interest to Wellesley…possible. [/li][/ul]General Comments: I’m super happy, I visited Wellesley in the spring and totally fell in love with it. Waiting until April to see where else I get in, but Wellesley is for sure one of my top choices. To everyone else who got a likely, Congrats! Good Luck to all Wellesley RD applicants!!

[] Summer Activities: I have volunteered every summer at the local library since I was 12. Did not volunteer this past summer due to rehearsal times (I had one of the lead parts in a summer play).
[] Essays: All the people that read them (my adviser, counselor, teachers) said they were really good. One of them (my grammar teacher, I think) even went so far as to say my Common App essay was one of the best, most creative essays she’s ever read. My essays were by far the best part of my application.
[] Teacher Recommendations:
1st rec: Somewhat cliche
2nd rec: Very good; it highlighted a lot of my specific strengths
3rd rec: My grammar teacher really went into a lot of depth about me as a person and my aspirations. It was a very personal and by far my best recommendation.
[] Counselor Rec: Pretty good. She talked about my future goals and how hard I’ve worked to bring up my GPA.
[] Additional Rec: My flute teacher for the past 5 years also gave me a recommendation. He talked about how he thought I would be an asset to the college because of my strong passion for writing and Japanese culture. He then talked about how I have demonstrated these passions. (I want to do a double major in English and East Asian Studies.)
[] Interview: It went really well. My interviewer said that she thought I would be a good fit for Wellesley. She said she would definitely recommend me and write me up a good report, but reminded me that her recommendation could only get me so far. (So true T_T)

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Essay, Recommendations, Interview, Extracurriculars
[] Weaknesses: GPA and test scores
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: GPA. I really screwed up my first three semesters of high school. However, I’ve been working hard ever since to bring up my GPA and have had straight A’s since my second semester as a sophomore, with only 1 C and 1 B. I was really hoping that Wellesley would see past my overall GPA, noticing my strong upward trend and how much I’ve matured since then. Apparently not.
[/ul]General Comments: My God, I’m so depressed. Wellesley was my dream school, and since yesterday I’ve been crying almost nonstop. I was under the impression that Wellesley looked at the person as a whole. It seems to me that they just looked at my overall GPA and threw me in the rejection pile. I really thought I would get a possibly…

UFOninja

Sorry to hear your case. Although you got an “unlikely”, I think it is not final before the formal rejection letter is sent in March. Certainly you have strengths in your application.
My D also got a “likely” though I don’t know all the specifics of her stats. She is happy as well as she can eliminate some of the other schools that she had also applied to. UFOninja, I’m sorry to hear of the preliminary results. You’re enthusiam had many of us pulling for you which we wish the admissions people at Wellesley could see. There may still be that outside chance as people’s minds and hearts change as new results come in. In the meantime, here is the common data set for Wellesley where you can see how you might compare with those that were admitted last year and where you could possibly improve to get into range:
