Reflection

Strengths: The objective
Weaknesses: The subjective
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Great question. Probably because my essays were subpar and my EC’s were not up to Williams’ standards.

General Comments: Super bummed! Williams is my first choice, so it is disappointing that they deferred me.

Decision: Accepted

Objective:

SAT I (breakdown): 2280 (800 CR, 730 M, 750 WR)
ACT: N/A
SAT II: 800 US History, 780 Literature
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0 (But homeschooled, so decide for yourself how impressive that is)
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1/1 (Homeschooled)
AP (place score in parenthesis): N/A
IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
Senior Year Course Load:
Calculus, Physics, French III, Existentialism in Philosophy & Literature, The Black Experience (Dual Enrollment), Psychology of Sex & Gender, Honors (DE), Microeconomics (DE), Principles of Sociology, Honors (DE)
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): None to speak of.

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Nothing, really.
Job/Work Experience: I did an unpaid internship at an solar company, is one thing.
Volunteer/Community service: I volunteered a bit during the 2012 presidential race, but that’s about it.
Essays: My CommonApp essay was just a retool of my Windows on Williams essay, and I didn’t really like it. My supplement was kind of weird and pretentious, but I liked it.
Teacher Recommendation: Pretty good. I had two community college professors write for me, and one of them is an English Prof., so I assume that they were at least okay.
Counselor Rec: I’m homeschooled, so my mother wrote it. Very brief, kind of cringe worthy but hey they required an counselor rec.

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I went to Windows on Williams, but I’m not first-gen or anything. I’m pretty poor, if that’s a hook.

Reflection

Strengths: Stats, maybe? I have no idea; I didn’t screw up too hard in any area of my application, which might’ve been part of it.
Weaknesses: ECs were pretty weak, but I’m from a not-rich background so competition dressage or whatever was pretty much out of the question for me.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Probably because I went to Windows on Williams but I have no idea how I got into WoW, so, who knows?

General Comments: Naw, I don’t want to comment too much. Draw your own conclusions, people.

Decision: Deferred

Gender: Female
Income Bracket: 100k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None

Reflection

Strengths: ECs (although there are only a few, I dedicate a significant amount of time and effort to each)
Weaknesses: stats (I’m not going to lie, I’m not a particularly good test taker. I tend to make silly errors rather than conceptual ones, and wow do they add up)
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: GPA (I have no regrets…I challenged myself by taking extremely challenging courses at an extremely challenging school and I am a better student for it)

General Comments: Honestly, the decision was crushing (but I guess somebody has to be disappointed). Williams is the perfect fit for me. I know that I’d get a lot from Williams and truly believe that I’d add to the community. I just wish the admission officers could see who I am as a person.
Best of luck to you all (and congrats to those who were accepted)! I’m sure that you are all really amazing individuals, so please remind yourselves of what makes you special and don’t forget to love yourselves

This thread if proof that test scores do not mean everything when it comes to college admissions. Four of us who got deferred were at or above Williams 75th percentile for test scores.

Um, zuh?

Does anyone know what percentage of those deferred eventually get accepted?

@straydog pretty much 0%. If you’re deferred, move on.

@straydog a close friend of my D15’s was deferred ED in the 2014/2015 admissions cycle. She was then waitlisted after the RD round. Finally, she was in fact offered a spot off the waitlist that April (which she gladly accepted). It is certainly possible but hard to know from year to year what percent are eventually admitted. Definitely best to turn attention to other schools so you have options you are happy with come spring.
