How come some applicants only had 2 SAT II's? I thought 3 were required for Yale?

No SATs are required if the ACT is submitted, two if the SAT I with writing.

i think you still have to take 3 even if you took the SAT I with writing

You are correct, underthebelljar.

underthebelljar- i love your screenname (i'm assuming it's based off of the bell jar by sylvia plath) i just read the book and it was amazing! have you read her poetry? i haven't, but i'm not a poetry person. is it similar to her novel? i was surprised at the end when esther didn't actually kill herself. ok, anyway... congrats again to acceptees

Subjective:
Essays: one about dad, one about writing/illustrating a children's book
Teacher Recs: One outstanding, other maybe okay..
Counselor Rec: I read it, and i thought it was really good...
Hook (if any): Published and sold my own children's book, and founded and organized teen chinese cultural dance club at my chinese school. our biggest performance was for the ambassador of china and our mayor in CLeveland for the opening of the "CHina exhibit" at science center.
Location/Person:
State or Country: Ohio
School Type: pretty good public school
Ethnicity:Asian....though by appearances ppl say that i look native american.. dammit -_-
Gender: Female
Other Factors: Dad died last year, my grades weren't the best and my standarized testing scores were somewhat hindered. ehhh i don't think thats a fair excuse. overall, i'm just not a very good standarized test taker.
General Comments: I can't say i wasn't expecting it...but still that doesn't keep me from bawling my eyes out. now i gotta go do a ton of last minute applications...and though my first choice is Yale..i think they base the decisions too much off of race and socioeconomic situations. therefore...i'm looking forward to applying to a certain school in boston instead.

Underthebelljar and twisty, I ADORE Sylvia Plath's poetry! I havn't read much, but what I have is good stuff. I love how she's so deep and mysterious in her poems. (Sorry, got carried away. Happens sometimes :p). Choco88, many of us got deferred. I'm hoping race/finances weren't considered...Yale is need-blind, so I would think there's a slim chance of that happening.

Well, I don't really want to post everything, but I'll say that with a 2240, SAT II's at 760, 750, 690, and a 3.74 uw gpa, i was rejected.

Everything else in my app, I believe, was pretty good... a music passion or hook, with athletics, community service, national merit semifinalist, leadership, interest in literature and the outdoors, etc. I had been skeptical of my chances at Yale with such a low gpa-- at a very competitive public high school, I'm barely in the top quarter. However, after talking with a counselor, some extended family members who attended Yale, and many friends, I decided they might not care too much about that if everything else was solid. Even though I can never be sure, I think that besides SAT scores that were perhaps slightly below Yale's average (though maybe not), it was my gpa and class rank that turned them off from me.

I would normally shrug it off, thinking that Yale is so damn competitive, but there's this annoying feeling I have in the back of my mind. For my frosh and soph years, I was serious about school, but had heard so many times from counselors here that as long as you got mostly A's you'd be a candidate for almost any school that I stopped short of really going after a near 4.0. In a 9th grade english class, for example, I had a really cool guy for a teacher, but his ideas of a good essay, I knew, were very strange after already being an avid reader. Rather than just going along with his guidelines like the other "smart kids", I gritted my teeth and settled for a B-. Though that's the lowest grade I've ever gotten, it's a smattering over other A-'s, B+'s and one or two B's that brought me down. I enjoyed school my first two years, but if only I had really made it my intent to score straight A's. Now I just can't remember if that's mostly my fault, or what teacher's and counselors said so often... it's what you learn that counts, not the grade. That might be partially true, but look what its current ramifications are.

Sorry for going crazy with this, but after seeing three of my friends get deferred from Yale, two with 4.0's and in my opinion meager extra-c's, no athletics, no real passion, etc., I pretty much convinced that even if your school is tough, you must be in the top 10%, usually with a 3.9+. If anyone got in or got deferred who doesn't fit that, please make a note of it (i haven't read all 13 pages of posts here).

it's prolly the 3.74 uw gpa that stings.

remember, hyp are poison ivy... they can hurt sometimes

I got deferred and am pretty bummed.

Yale is still my first choice because I researched so many colleges and visited. I just couldn't see myself any where else. I've contacted my regional rep and I'm going to work with him and see what's best for my application.

Well, I'm an interesting case. I was deferred as a homeschooler. I don't know what exactly they thought while reading my application.

How do we go about contacting our regional admissions people? Are these the people that were indicated on the blue sheet Yale mailed a couple weeks ago, the one with our PIN, username, etc.?

yep, like mine, in NE is Christopher Murphy, and that was on that blue letter

So what did you say when you contacted your regional admissions person?

I looooove Sylvia Plath's poetry but I hated the Bell Jar. Those of you who did may like Surfacing by Margaret Atwood.

General Comments: I have a theory that those who were deferred are those who were qualified, but for some reason, failed to stand out. Perhaps it's just Yale saying to us, "Hey you! You're great! Just prove yourself!" At least, that's what I hope. Oh, well. See you all next round!

I'm hoping for the exact same thing americangypsy.

that's just it. It's almost like a, we like you a lot but we need to see the regular pool thing. Not many applicants get a second chance to fix things, ya know?

haha thanks kcrpeterson, i just wish i knew what to fix

talk/call/e-mail your regional admit guy/girl. They might have some advice, and you'd get another chance to really emphasize that you want to go to Yale

Yeah, I sent a letter to my regional rep already, explaining and updating a few things. I changed my intended major from English to a double of Philosophy and Religion and detailed a plan for a future career in academics....I don't know if it was too early or too much. I hope not.
