[] Number of Apps from Your School: 1
[] Other stats:
[/ul][ b]Subjective:[ul]
[] ECs listed on app: National History Day state finalist, Varsity swimming (3 years - NCS qualifier and various awards), Water polo (4 years and various awards), Rec league water polo (4 years), rec swimming for 11+ years, Civil War living history presentations (approx 400+ hours community service), band, History Club (president), attended Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College as merit scholarship student this summer, also judged NHD California regional finals for the junior division, etc etc etc
[] Job/Work Experience: lifeguard / water safety instructor (35 hours/week)
[] Essays (subject and responses): 1 essay, wrote about passion for studying history, partic. the American Civil War and connected it to being adopted etc etc etc. I thought it was good, but that's a kind of biased point of view.
[] Teacher Recs: 1 from AP Lit teacher (who is close family friend), 1 from 11th grade APUSH teacher, they were probably pretty good.
[] Counselor Rec: Fairly decent but probably impersonal as school is huge.
[] Interview (feel and general location): At the guy's office, it went pretty well.
[] Hook (if any): I'm a Korean adoptee/Civil War person? I don't know. Probably none.
[/ul][ b]Location/Person:
[ul]
[] State or Country: CA
[] School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): public school, less than 25% go to 4 year institutions
[] Ethnicity: Korean
[] Income Bracket: decline to state
[] Gender: female
[] Hooks: See above
[] Strengths/Weaknesses: Weaknesses: SAT scores are horribleeeeeeeee x 10^23984713; I'm kind of bland, like mashed potatoes. Did not cure cancer or climb Mt Kiliamajaro. Am Asian. Strength: I have a lot of community service and am fairly well-rounded. I think my essay was strong and I have a distinct passion and have done everything I could to pursue it/be involved/blah blah blah. I took 2384123 AP classes, but so have the rest of you. My school kind of sucks, so maybe I looked good in context? I don't know. My brain hurts.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I was deferred because I'm clearly not qualified to be accepted. I'm still baffled as to why I even got deferred. I was kind of happy. Sort of. Whatever. I don't know. I'm kind of indifferent.
[/ul]Other Factors: I have rainboots.
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: Congratulations to everyone who got in. Good luck to those who were deferred. Yay, Yale. Beat Harvard.

amnesia...we had a girl with 1950 get in over an asian with 2370

and just a page ago there was a mexican with like 1900 composite who got in over us.

aa is alive and well

coquettish - You are NOT a failure as a human being. I am a parent and was for a year on the admissions committee at Yale Med School. You cannot believe the kind of people that got rejected. In your personal case it may have been that the original two people that screened your application just didn't resonate with you. They in turn present to the rest of the committee. Unless they are very enthusiastic, the other members are not going to jump in because they have their own set of candidates they want to push. Had another set of evaluators read you first, you may have been accepted.
I am also a parent and I can tell you your parents love you no matter what, and I would love to have a daughter that thinks like you. There was a Spartan saying "The office does not make the man, the man makes the office". I will tell you straight right now- your parents are proud of you. Now you need to be proud of you. I don't know you, yet the few words you have typed on a message board impressed me. You will continue to impress other people as you go along in life, rest assured of that.

**General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: **CONGRATS TO ALL THOSE WHO WERE ACCEPTED! To fellow deferrees- I hope to hear from you all in the future to find out where you end up :) We were just too cool to be accepted right away lol Best of luck to everyone on CC!

I am also a parent and I can tell you your parents love you no matter what, and I would love to have a daughter that thinks like you.

I would like to second that. I am a parent of four, one of whom is at Yale. What makes me proud of my kids is the kind of people they are, not where they go to school. The fact that you are upset about disappointing your parents speaks volumes of you as a person. Anyone who would be concerned for someone else's disappointment can't possibly be a failure in the things that truly count. You sound like a sensitive young woman and I'm certain your parents are very proud of you.

Coquettish, honey, you have NOT failed your parents. From reading your posts it is clear to me that you are an extraordinary person! All of us parents on these boards are proud of you and all of the kids here! You WEREN'T rejected! You were deferred! Considering the fact that 1/3 of applicants were outright rejected, you're in a good position! Go ahead and bawl tonight. Cyberhugs from this mom are coming your way! Then, tomorrow, take a long look at your Yale application...then make it better! Revise your essays if they need it and send them in again! Send another essay! Send another teacher recommendation! Send other things that show the admissions officers who you are and why you deserve to be admitted to Yale and to all of the other colleges you are applying to! Best of luck! I'll be praying for you!

Just checking in here after a note in the Parents Forum with a word of encouragement to the Rejected and Deferred (most of whom will be ultimately Rejected as well):

My daughter was outright rejected two years ago. (3.9uw/2370 equiv./1570/great EC/rec/etc. Wound up being one of the best things that ever happened to her though it was extremely painful at the time because she wasn't used to defeat. She's now a top student at a highly regarded LAC and has had opportunities in her first year and a half, both research and EC's, that she would never have had at Yale. Her outlook for top Law School/Grad school is outstanding. At this point, she'd turn down Yale if they magically called.

The moral is: as dark as the clouds may be right now, some of the linings may turn out to be spectacular. Hang in there.

Yale has failed.

Seriously.

They simply screwed over the northeast this year.

No doubt about it.

BobBobBob, you need to let go of the AA riff. The # of AA-related admissions is a handful out of the total and all of them are capable of doing the work. Statistically, you could eliminate every "diversity admit" and the odds are heavy that you'd still be rejected. Meanwhile, Yale would be worse off. As one student put it in a memorable quote, "What's a seminar table circled by nothing but upper-middle-class white kids going to say about discrimination?" A pointed example, but everything from being African-American/Hispanic to being the daughter of a goat farmer in Texas brings additional viewpoints and intellectual capital to the campus.

Fwiw, I'll bet that Yale is still heavily over-represented by students from the Northeast, relative to the population. It's no longer a Northeast preserve. And good for 'em.

im not talking about only the AA. Yale screwed our entire region...schools in my area that normally send 4-5 and lucky this year if theyre getting 1.

obviously something is up.

Seriously, if they were going to do this, they should have announced it. Why should we use our scea on a school that is actively going to discrimiate against us?

Im not completely against AA. If a kid in a lower income bracket who is a urm has similar stats (NOT 400 POINTS OFF), then I understand the choosing of a urm over a middle class white kid.

But when urms with a 1950 get in over asians or white kids with 2350s...come on. and please dont bring up that they may have ecs or something like that. every kid, unless he is one of the few that has an AMAZING ec, has pretty much the same stuff.
