Ohio Northern Univ. - How is Dance program?

My D is seriously considering the BFA MT program at Ohio Northern. We are wondering how the dance program there is. Our D is an advanced dancer and is considering a Dance minor. Does anyone have any information on this program?

My D is also an experienced dancer and I trying to get a bit more information on the Dance at Ohio Northern. I understand that you can take a Dance Minor to increase the amount to dance classes. I was wondering if there are any students there who are dancers that can give some information on the dance program.

My daughter is a junior MT major at ONU. She can dance but is not classically trained per se, more show choir, tap, jazz. She never wanted to take ballet and now is regretting that choice. I will say as far as I know she can “move” and has been challenged by the dance program at ONU. I suggest calling the department and talking to them to get more information. I am sure they would be more than happy to answer any questions you have about any aspect of the program. My daughter is quite happy there and very busy. Rehearsing for Nine which is in a few weeks.

My daughter contacted Dr. Laurie Bell about the Dance minor and the dance opportunities at ONU. Dr. Bell was kind enough to make the time after hours to talk with my D and answer all of her questions in detail. They do have advanced training and about 8 - 10 master classes a semester. They do brin in professional choreographers and dance companies for performances. Those visiting companies and choreographers often integrate the students in the performances. Or they might being in a guest choreographer for a musical (such as this year).

After talking with Dr. Bell at length, my daughterfeels that this would be a good place to get her training. She is really hard pressed to decide between Ohio Northern and Rider University.

I forgot about the professional dance companies that come in to perform. Freshman and sophomore year my daughter had the opportunity to work with the groups that came in and LOVED it. This semester she has 2 dance classes and always has taken at least one dance class each semester, so there IS a dance emphasis for sure. MTDancerMom I see you are from Houston. There are several MT students from the Houston area.

Would love to hear any information regarding the dance in the MT program… D was accepted here at Unifieds and we are seriously considering. Any information would be wonderful.

My daughter loves to dance. She goes to ONU and took a Dance minor so she could take more dance classes. Now she is dancing daily. They have a dance company come in the fall and students can audition to join them and they have their own dance performance in the spring. My D is a freshman and is loving the school. (It took a little while because it is a small school and in the middle of nowhere) She is getting call backs and loves the people they bring to the school. (go on the web site and search Wings to see one of the fall workshops.

Feel free to message me, I would be glad to get more information from my D

We were a little freaked out when we watched a clip of their Millie rehearsal… one student said it “challenging” for them because most are movers - not dancers. We were like…… oh. :frowning:

@SpottyMom - when you say you were freaked out after watching the clip, was it because they were or weren’t good dancers? Just trying to get a feel for the type of dance program offered. I’d love to see the clip too. Would you mind posting the link?

I don’t mean to imply that they weren’t good dancers - they might be great… We were just surprised to hear a student describe themselves as “movers” not dancers. Here’s the clip:

<a href=“Thoroughly Modern Millie - YouTube”>Thoroughly Modern Millie - YouTube; around 2:00

Maybe she’s vocal - so she doesn’t take as many dance classes? Not sure. It raised a red flag - and we’re going to really try to pin them down on how much dance - and at what level they offer. Millie can be a bit of a challenging show if you’re not a dancer - but our HS just did it - my 9th grade daughter was in it and they did a bang up job. Fantastic dancing - both the girls and guys tapped in several scenes… and they are just HS students.

I wish I could see a clip of their final performance to see what they considered challenging?

Here’s a clip of 42 street. We liked this - <a href=“- YouTube”>- YouTube;

I think the term movers means they were not classical trained as dancers. They move well and can pick up choreography and look good doing it on stage

You might be right - I don’t know. I’ve not heard another school describe their students as movers rather than dancers. My concern with that term is once my child graduates from college I want her prepared for a career in MT - and that will require dance to make her competitive. The whole triple threat thing. Based on what others have posted, it sounds like ONU offers master dance classes - and a dance minor. I would want to verify the skill level is challenging for students who have grown up taking a lot of dance classes. The OP described her daughter as an advanced dancer. Surely she doesn’t want her child to be the sole dancer in a class of movers. Hopefully that’s not the case.

When I watched the clip I noticed that the student who said that about them being more “movers than dancers” was a Communications Arts Major. That may have something to do with it?? Not sure. I will definitely ask more when I am there as my daughter is definitely a dancer and will be wanting to do a dance minor if she attends.

@NAtlantaStudio Do the students have to audition to do a dance minor? My D is a dancer also and would also want to minor in dance. When is your visit?

When my D asked about the Dance Minor she was told that you audition the first week of school. It is for dance placement and to be in the Dance Minor. We are going to be there next Monday. We will bring a full report :)

We are headed to the campus tomorrow… it’s going to be a long week but I think we will be getting to the end and ready to make a decision!!! Looking forward to our visit tomorrow and Monday!

@NAtlantaStudio Safe travels and have a great trip Hopefully you can post something about your visit.

I will definitely give you guys an update!

Okay…so we have finished our day trip here at ONU. I have to say that we are very happy with the time we have spent here. As for the person who commented that they are more of “movers” than dancers I would have to say that must just be that particular person. We were able to attend both a Musical Theatre Dance Styles class which is a class where the students are taught original choreo from shows such as Oklahoma, West Side, etc… I was very pleased to watch the class and have D participate some there. I can say that while there are some kids that were not dancers per se, there were many who were. We also got to sit in a Jazz III class that was a very good level of dance and left my D and pleased with what we saw.

We also got to attend a Business of Musical Theatre class taught by Jeremy Cznariak… this a Jr/Sr class set up to help the kids make the transition into the “real world”. I thought it was a really good class with real life applications that the kids were able to apply and start using. I really liked this class.

D is currently watching their rehearsals for “Footloose” and says that it is really good and that she is having a blast watching. All in all I feel that this is a great option and definitely a “hidden gem” that I have heard others call it here on CC. The reception from the students and staff here is extremely warm and the Inn on campus is extremely nice and was very comfortable for our family!!!
