Ohio State Essay HELP!!!!

I have no idea how the admissions people want me to answer this question.

Prompt: Why do you want to attend the Ohio State University? (300 words max)

I want to attend the Ohio State University because I feel it will give me the best opportunity for a successful life after college. Ohio State has over 40,000 economically, ethnically, and socially diverse student body. This will help prepare me for a globally interconnected future. To me, Ohio State is more than just a college. It’s a community that will prepare me for a successful future no matter what path I choose to take. Even though the school has a very large number of students I feel that I will be able to find my own small niche while taking advantage of the opportunities a big school has to offer, such as studying abroad and becoming a member of a few of the many clubs the school has to offer. Another appealing aspect of Ohio State is its passion. I have attended a few of the universities football games, and I have never seen and felt such a great amount of pride for a particular school. Those Saturdays in fall really opened my eyes to the connection you have with the alumni and current students of Ohio State. To see over 100,000 strong all wearing scarlet and grey watching the “Best Damn Band in the Land!” perform the famous script Ohio left me with a feeling I will never forget. Not only does Ohio State show passion on the field but it does so off the field as well. One major reason for me wanting to become a student of Ohio State is their focus on academic success. Ohio State is one of the top research universities in the country. This will help me prepare for a constantly changing world, where technology and research changes so drastically in such a short amount of time.

To be honest, this prompt is awful. There is no way to answer it without flattering the school in some way. But i love the school and want to go there. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I’m with you dude, the prompt does suck. It’s hard to be creative with it, and like you said, it’s impossible not to flatter the school. I’d say that your essay is decent to good and if you’re stats are good enough that you are fairly certain that you will be admitted, then this essay is fine. If you feel like there’s a decent shot you might not be admitted though, I would completely scrap this and try to come up with something creative that will make it stand out.

Yeah, I hate this prompt as well.

Though, OSU is my safety, so it won’t be a huge deal how good my essay is, but I think mine is decent.

I just graduated from Ohio State, and I miss it already! I feel for you though, writing those essays is annoying, especially with such a terrible prompt.

Your essay isn’t bad and it’s pretty well written. However it doesn’t stand out from any other college admissions essay. I agree with Browniez and I think you should come up with something creative! Ohio State is getting more and more selective every year, so you need to come up with something that helps you stand out from the thousands of other applicants. If you have any unique hobbies or interests, you could talk about how you appreciate how Ohio State is so large and diverse that there is something for everyone. Talk about how you want to start a club.

Good luck!

Ok thanks guys! I revised the essay big time. Here it is.

I want to attend The Ohio State University because it will prepare me for a successful life after college. The university is more than just a college; it is a community that will allow me achieve my goals, no matter what path I choose to take. The diversity of the student body will help prepare me for a globally connected future. Even though the school has a very large number of students, I know I will be able to find my own small niche while taking advantage of the opportunities a big school has to offer, such as studying abroad in Italy, and becoming a member of a few of the many clubs, such as ski club. Another appealing aspect of The Ohio State University is the pride and passion of the university community. I have attended a few football games where I experienced this pride and passion. Those Saturdays in the fall opened my eyes to the connection I would have with the alumni, current students, and staff of The Ohio State University. Watching the “Best Damn Band in the Land” perform the famous script Ohio along with 100,000 other loyal fans, left me with a desire to be part of the university community. On my campus visit I saw this pride and passion also occur off the field. I saw how technologically up to date The Ohio State University is. The resources I would be using, such as the Thompson Library, proved to me how devoted The Ohio State University is to their students’ academic achievement. The Ohio State University has all of the elements I need to succeed.
