It doesn’t mention the specific criteria to get into the Honors College at Ohio State on their website, so I was wondering how good of a chance I have. If I get admitted into the honors college and receive the National Buckeye Scholarship I will likely go here.
Major: Aerospace Engineering
GPA: 3.73 UW, 4.01 W (Taking 1 AP and 3 honors in 10th grade, 5 AP/IB classes in 11th, and 5 AP/IB in 12th). I am top 5% in my class.
SAT: 1420/1600 (760 MATH, 660 R/WR)
ACT: 30 composite (32 English, 34 Math, 27 Reading, 26 Science)
ECs: Varsity Cross Country in 11th and 12th, Varsity Swim all 4 years (2x All-Conference, 3x State Qualifier), Varsity Track, Model UN, National Honor Society, Piano for 10 years, Orchestra, Volunteering for Engineering Camp for middleschoolers.
Essays for all colleges are very good as they have been reviewed by multiple teachers.
I’d say your chances are very good, given that about half the people who apply to Honors get in. Your class rank and test score are right on par. ECs look good, although there could be more leadership. If you had multiple teachers read over your essays, you’ll probably be in good shape there as well. I would say with fairly strong confidence that you’ll be admitted into Honors. I don’t know how many of those scholarships are given out, but you’re above the minimums they list on the criteria page.
By the way, I was admitted into Honors when I went to OSU and had similar GPAs and test scores as you do. I also received a full-tuition scholarship, although I was an in-state student.
@blackcanyon I’m wondering the same thing…
High School is around 7th best in country
Major: Psychology
GPA 4.0 UW 4.385 W
(Total of around 13 Honors and 7 AP classes)
SAT 1340
I started my own school environmental club and am the current founder/president. I’m in NHS, key club, varsity field hockey (District Champions 3x), ultimate frisbee (state champs 2x), HOSA, French club secretary, hospital volunteer etc.
Class rank N/A (my school doesn’t give it out, but I’m around 5-10%)
I’m very confident in all of my essays as well.
Ohio State is my first choice if I get into the Honors program, but I’m just anxiously waiting now, hoping I have a good chance of getting in.
@456swimgirl Normally people with 31-32 ACT are admitted into the honors program, from what I’ve heard. Your SAT is a little lower but your GPA is high so that should make up for it and you have a good chance. They care about ECs a lot and it looks like you have a lot. I got into Michigan State’s honors college with lower stats than their averages (MSU needs 1450 SAT, top 5%), but I have good ECs.
@456swimgirl I was talking about Ohio State. Generally people who are admitted get in with a 31-32 at and top 5% of their class. I was talking about MSU for an example of how I got in with lower than the average stats.
@Banana2504 got an email this morning stating that I was denied and that I got into scholars. The email’s subject was “Welcome to the scholars program” which is confusing because in the email it states that I didn’t get accepted into honors and that I still had to apply for scholars…
The OSU process is confusing. My DD received a Maximus but has not heard about Honors? Does this mean that she will not be accepted into the Honors Program?
My son checked with the staff at the Honors program and they had yet to make a decision on him. They also said not to worry that we hadn’t heard anything yet, because they are still sending out the majority of their decisions. So, sit tight and wait… ugh. I am not good at waiting.
My S has yet to hear about Honors. Its a long shot. He was accepted to aerospace engineering in the first round. His ACT is probably below the range for Honors, but he wrote an excellent essay and has a very strong holistic application. Hopefully they will look beyond the numbers.
