Ohio State Merit Chances: OOS Student

Hey Guys, From NY,desire to enter the business school. Ohio State University really appeals to me, and i am in need of serious financial help so i was wondering what my chances for merit scholarships were?

STATS

I’m glad to hear your interested in OSU! It’s a great university and the college of business is even better. Like you, I was an OOS student looking for financial aid and I was able to receive merit scholarships. Here were some of my stats:

GPA: 3.95 UW and top 10% of class
SAT: 2000 with math/reading= 1400
ACT: 31 English: 28 Math: 36 Reading: 29 Science: 31
AP: About 5 classes? cant remember exactly
EC: Baseball 4 year, NHS 4 years

As you can see your SAT is higher than mine and the fact that you will have 9 AP courses will help you stand out. OSU also likes to look at your class rank for different scholarships so that will affect you too.

In my opinion you basically have a 100% chance of getting scholarships lol… You are limited to what you can get based on your ethnicity, financial need, etc. Go to this link: Scholarships and look under the merit scholarships. These are the scholarships available to everyone (not ethnically based).

You dont qualify for the eminence scholarship (basically full ride) because it requires math/reading 1520 for your SAT.

The next three scholarships (Maximus, Provost, Trustees) are all the same type with just different qualifications and amounts. You can only get one of these even if you qualify for all of them. Your SAT scores qualify you for the top one however it will depend on class rank. If you’re in the top 3% you will get maximus, otherwise you will get Provost.

Lastly is the National Buckeye Scholarship that helps cover OOS tuition. You will definitely get this one.

In the end Ohio State is still an expensive school but well worth it. I suggest looking for more scholarships outside of OSU to try and help cover some of the cost due to the limited scholarship opportunities. Also, each college within OSU has their own scholarships that they give out to students. Go to the buisness college’s page and look to see what they have to offer. As always, you can fill out the FAFSA and get financial aid from the government if you qualify. Goodluck!

@TexasBuckeye7 Thanks so much! i know i don’t qualify for eminence. I’m hoping Ideally for National Buckeye + Maximus(although if i dont get this i think i will get provost or trustees at worst)…I am of iranian decent, a first generation american in my family(not first gen college). Should i apply for the Morril Scholars? how does that work?

also my school doesnt do rank…so how do i figure that out

If your school doesn’t do rank then I’m not really sure. Try asking your high school counselor about this because scholarships for almost all schools look at class rank. I would imagine that OSU would just look at your SAT scores and see that you qualify for maximus so you should get that or provost at worst.

I’m not sure how the Morrill Scholars Program works but from what I read on here: [OSU Office of Diversity and Inclusion | Morrill Scholars Program](http://odi.osu.edu/future-students/morrill-scholars-program/morrill-scholars-program/index.php) it sounds like you qualify and would just need to write the seperate essay for it. There are 3 different levels of the scholarship and if you get one it replaces all other scholarships from OSU. The program offers you alot of good opportunities for research and study abroad programs too.

I’m not familiar with this at all so if you are interested in it I would suggest contacting someone on the website for more information. Check to see what the program actually is because you might be required to do things or take certain classes.

@TexasBuckeye7 will do. Thanks so much!

You don’t need to include the class rank. They will rank you based on the pool of applicants (I did not include a class rank and received both the National Buckeye and the Provost). For the major scholarships, you’re set!

For Morrill, you might have a difficult time with that unless you bring diversity to the university. That includes socioeconomic diversity.

@CaptainMcNeil How does a first generation born american of iranian descent from a lower middle class family sound for diversity? i’m kindave confused as to what they want for morrill

If in your essay you include Iranian (since I believe Common App classifies that as ‘white’) that might help.

How ‘lower middle class’ are we talking about? Enough for financial need grants? I don’t need to know specifics. But if you could conceivably get the Scarlet and Gray grant (use the OSU net price calculator to find out), then that would be a good indicator of socioeconomic diversity.

@CaptainMcNeil i dont think that low, but my family has zero assets, a declining family business and we lost our home. We still have a decent income of about ~110k give or take a few thousand but we have literally zero assets with nothing to fall back on…so we are not exactly living “comfortably” in middle-upper middle class…pretty much paycheck to paycheck.

110k is not lower middle class. So socioeconomic diversity is probably not the way to go for you.

Losing your house (if the story is…I hate to say it but ‘dramatic’ enough) might help.

@Captain McNeil. I know it’s not lower middle persay but thats not what gets brought home…being deep in debt…its not really 110k if that makes sense…most of it goes to debt
