Ohio State - Morrill Scholars Program *and* Scholars Program

Hi!

Is there anyone who is both a MSP scholarship recipient and a participant in a Scholars Program? My D received the MSP Prominence scholarship and has been accepted into her first choice Scholars program.

I am curious as to how housing works if a student is a member of both. Does the student live with the MSP Learning Community or does the student live with her Scholars community? I thought I’d ask here before my D calls to inquire.

Also, can (and will) anyone share insight into what the experience is like participating in both the MSP and a Scholars program?

TIA!

I have one part of answer from calling Morrill Program- for their learning community, only a subset actually live there=- I believe they said about 80 students of the approx 300 scholars. You apply and they review to select and I do think it’s competitive. Also, not sure if the 300 includes just incoming freshman, so guess that means there could be upperclassman on their floor too counted toward the number of rooms allotted.

@ballet13, Thank you for the information. It’s helpful. You’ve given me a framework with which to help my daughter ask the right questions.

I’m a recipient of both. I chose Business Scholars and it happens to be that Morrril and Business Scholars are in Blackburn dorm. I imagine they group them by floors, one of the floors for each group. I prefer to room with Business Scholars as I’ll be taking classes with them as well.

Do you know what is the process to be a Morrill early arrival? I’m from OOS and it will help me to get early to settle down prior to the craziness of thousands arriving.

@lab99, I do not know the application process for the MSP early arrival program. I assume that that info is forthcoming to all MSP participants — or maybe has been provided to those who have paid their acceptance fee. (My D has not yet committed to Ohio State. She won’t make a decision until after she visits next month.)

My daughter is a Morrill recipient and a member of a scholars program. She is in the dorm with her scholars, but there are numerous opportunities to engage with Morrill. I do highly recommend the early arrival program - information for that comes out to the group later in the spring. It is competitive (only 80 or so get in), so get your application in as soon as possible after they come out.

@mom1girl Do you know how competitive it is to get in for the Morrill Learning Community? My daughter still needs to do her essay for it. Thanks.

@mom1girl, Thanks for the tip to get the MSP early arrival application done ASAP. We didn’t realize that it’s competitive…Yikes!

@lab99, My D received an email on March 22, informing her that the application for the MSP Early Arrival Program will be available on May 1, 2017. The dates of the program are Tuesday, August 15 - Friday, August 18.

Yes, I received the email. Thanks!

@ballet13 - My apologies - I just saw your question. I don’t really know about the Morrill Learning Community because she lived with her scholars program, but she has several friends who did live there and love it. I don’t think they had problems getting in, but I’m sorry, I don’t have more details.

Does anyone know if there is a page or FB group for morrill? My daughter had applied learning community and met someone she thought would be rooming with next year but other girl’s plans changed. Now she would like see other morrill scholars who may be good fit for each other. Any upper class parents of students who did morrill learning community and feedback?
Wondering if learning community on top of regular morrill activities is not broad enough and should she consider no learning community?
