Ohio State

What do you think of Ohio State, as far academics go? Anyone know what the people are like, social scene, etc?

Is it worth the money to attend OSU as an out of state student?

Depends on what your interests are academically. It is a very good school for the sciences such as optometry. I however don't think it is a good school for an undergrad education. Too big, too many people, etc. There are a good number of international students so the diversity is there and provides a great experience. The social life is okay and the greek system is strong. The sad fact is that it is located in Columbus, Ohio, the capital of the state of Ohio and the entire city revolves around OSU and OSU athletics. It has gotten somewhat more difficult to get into the university which is good that they are raising their standards as a state school. I finished my undergrad there and obtained my masters from there, but cannot see sending any of my children there for undergrad work.

What's your big state U so we know what we're comparing it to? All of my son's freinds are going there next year. I think the honors program is supposed to be good and they have become tougher on overall admissions. Everyone we know that's gone there has loved it from a social/athletic scene standpoint. Personally, I feel it's too large and while Columbus is a great city, the area where the university is located isn't the best. There have been some stories of rioting after games, too.

The OP lives in Georgia.

Don't go to OSU; I don't think it's worth the out of state money. GTech and UGA are better and much cheaper.

I live about 10 minutes from OSU. A lot of kids from our high school go in to the honors program at OSU; if they don't get in to the honors program, they generally choose to go elsewhere. The honors program has a lot of valuable perks; the other kids have a hard time getting an education--ridiculous class sizes, difficulty getting needed courses in sequence and at in appropriate semesters, TAs not speaking English, etc.

If you haven't a clue as to a major then it is absurd to spend that kind of money on out of state tuition. If you have an idea of your interests then you need to look at universities that are strong in your areas of interest. OSU is a great grad school. I am not impressed by the class sizes etc in the honors program. As for the area of town, much could be said for any university in a large city. There isn't a large city with a university the size of OSU that doesn't have some of the same situations that OSU has incurred. Campus Safety is campus safety no matter where you are and that is not rocket science.
