I got an e-mail from Stanford inviting me to apply for this class called Introduction to Mathematical Thinking, which will run from March 4th-May 30th and can potentially give you college credit. I guess its the first time they've offered such a course and are only accepting 16 students. It includes watching video lectures and a 2-hour class meeting once a week with a Stanford professor. Here is the website for the description/application:

Does anyone think this is a worthwhile opportunity? It is a little bit costly and would take up time but if it is worth it I think it would be to my benefit to apply. I'm planning on either going to MIT(was deferred early action) or Georgia Tech(accepted early action) and majoring in computer science, so while I am not a mathematics major my major will be a heavily math intensive one. I have a 4.0 in high school, have taken pretty much every math class available to me(am currently in AP Calc BC and AP Stats, I got a 5 on AP Calc AB last year) and got a 35 ACT math, 750 SAT, and 800 SAT Math Level 2. Would it be worthwhile to apply to this program, and do you think I have a good shot at being accepted?

I too got the email - it looks like it would be useful. Personally, I’m not applying, as I think I’ve already taken the class (or at least, a college course with the exact same title…), but be warned that it goes on a “Stanford Online High School transcript,” that is, it appears to give no college credit? Not too sure.

But it looks like the skills the class teaches you could be very useful. Bear in mind that if you do a lot of math competitions, you might not gain that much, but if not, this type of thinking could come in handy.

No idea on admissions; they only take 16, and the email seems to have been sent out to a LOT of people, but the 990 dollar price tag should deter quite a few.

I’m not going to sign up. However, I’ve looked at the course on Coursera and it seems very interesting. I might take the course there. Best of all, it’s free.

The first sentence goes: “based on your outstanding academic achievement…” sounds familiar right? It is not sent by Stanford. The organizer just got all our mail list from the collegeboard who sell our info all the time. 990 is definitely deterring a lot of people.

No OHsx is legit. It’s on the same website as the other competitive Stanford programs. I think nobody is just the do not respond email that they use. I feel like everyone who’s taken an SAT got this email… But I don’t remember getting one last year as a junior although I did take my SAT in January. Who knows. Not doing it =.= Does Stanford really think anyone really has the time to take a class like this…
