Ok i am just plain ****ed now....

According to a friend of mine, this girl at my school got accepted into the Virginia Governor's School mentorship program for marine biology. This program only accepts 6 people I believe in all of Virginia. I applied for Math, Science, and Technology, which accepts 200 people, but I have not heard from them yet, so I am assuming I was rejected. Even if I was accepted though, this is still an outrage... I do not understand how there are not 6 other applicants in all of VA who are more qualified than her. Since this is a science program, you are supposed to list things in science you have done. I believe all she has done is honors chemistry. No awards and No ECs i think, very little at most. I on the other hand am taking 3 sciences, 2 of them honors, finished 2 semesters of computer programming, am part of the Colonial Virginia Aeromodeler's Club(I guess thats kinda connected with engineering), was the team captain of my school's JV JETS team, participated at the VA regional Science Bowl, won the geometry award in 9th grade for top freshman in that subject, and the USAA national science merit award. Btw this is just the stuff I put on my application then, Ive done a couple more things since then. On top of all that, im pretty sure my grades are higher than hers too. She is in pre-calc instead of honors algebra2/trig which Im in, which is a small step up i guess but that is it I believe. Im guessing my essay was not terrible and that hers was not the best in the world. I dont see why my teachers would write me bad reccomendations. So right now, im pacing around my room trying to figure out why in the world shed get into this super competitive program while I get rejected from possibly one of the easiest to get into...Ill check again with the dean next week to see if I got in. Even if I do, id still be pretty mad, but if I dont, I think I should write a letter to Gov School. This just isnt fair....

Well sometimes these programs practice arbitrary admissions and don't admit the most academically qualified. Passion in marine science may be huge in this program as well.

Don't lose hope just yet - sometimes, programs don't announce decisions on the same day. SSP is one example.

Life is unfair and I hope that you'll get into EPGY. Unfortunately summer programs are becoming more like college admissions and people will have to apply to a lot if they really want to do something over the summer. And if you fail everywhere - try contacting a professor or taking an EPGY course.

I dont see any indication of passion in marine biology from her. None of the essay topics would have given her an easy way to communicate that to them either if she was. She put down her ECs in other subjects like model UN and and Tri-M honor society I think, although the directions specificaly instructed to put down ECs that are only related to the field you are applying to.

oh yeah about EPGY, my dad is now refusing to pay for it, and refusing to let me pay for it, so I dont know how ill convince him if I do get accepted
sigh

the only statement i dont agree is the fact that you said alg2/trig is higher that pre-calc. i'm sorry but that is not correct. be patient grasshopper.

it isnt, sry if i didnt write that correct. Pre calc is higher and thats what she is in is what I meant. Thats pretty much the only way shes outdone me in math and science i think

I feel your pain too. My parents are also extremely reluctant to pay for any summer programs. In fact once I was accepted to a free summer program that pretty much closed the door on all of the other summer programs I applied to, even though they were both research oriented.

Unfortunately, alg2/trig does not look very good for sophs because many sophs will have been at Pre-Calc or even Calc. The situation doesn't even look good for sophs with Calc - I know at least 3 sophs with Calc who got rejects from SSP. I'm a sophomore with Calc and AIME and I got 4 rejects, 1 acceptance, and 1 waitlist.

If all goes wrong, maybe try for a Pre-Calc class over summer? It would really llook better if you had calc next year. Pre-Calc is mostly a review of Alg 2 however so if your school si really flexible then I would try for Calc next year and something else in the form of a distance course. DIstance courses may be cheaper than summer courses and should b more worth the price.

that wouldve been out of my power to change most likely. Some students skipped a math level, i dunno how. Despite being at the top of my geometry class last year, I wasnt offered the option to skip, and I doubt they wouldve let me although I didnt ask so I dont know. Im asking this year and i hope theyll let me. If they dont then yeah ill ask if I can take a course over the summer to skip.

What ****es me a lot about the EPGY program though is that my parents will let me do governors school + the NSLC for engineering, which would total to over $3000. EPGY is the same price, with plane tickets $1000 more at most id imagine. Not a big difference, yet they are reluctant to pay, even if I chip in.

How many girls apply...maybe that had something to do with it...maybe she did something you are unaware of...maybe she lied...just know she will probably not do well if this isn't her strength, and that will very quickly become apparent if she is doing something she is not prepapred for.

I know that doesn't help you. I understand the frustration.

Females of all races are at an advantage when it comes to math and science programs because there's a scarcity of women who are getting doctorates in those fields.

crazyglue it amazes me how concerned you are about others, why do you care about others fortune? worry about yourself, sometimes rejection is needed for a stronger future, i know that from experience
