My daughter is a sophomore and is applying to the Summer 2017 Virginia Governor’s School for Humanities. She is not a kid looking for something to do in the summer. She normally coaches a team all summer long and competes. I was hoping to get some feedback on the admissions perspective and how admissions staff view acceptance and participation in these programs. She is looking for ways to set herself apart from her peers and demonstrate leadership. It appears to be a competitive program in Virginia. Any feedback would be most helpful.
My daughter did the language academy this summer. It’s free, so that’s a plus. It’s a fairly competitive process to get accepted…for my daughter’s program, it was 10% admit rate. You can’t just pay your way in like other summer academic programs. To the extent that admissions offices know and understand that about Virginia Governor’s School, I think it looks pretty good.
Thank you. Your feedback helps.
My son did the Humanities program! It was an enriching experience and, I believe, looks pretty good on college applications. i don’t believe that it really demonstrates leadership but it does show dedication to studies, and, because it’s free, it’s obvious you can’t pay your way in. I know my son had one of the best months (if not the best) of his life!
