Thumper we do know her college and their calendar, just dont know her schedule yet.
She may have profs who dont have class on Tuesday or Monday.

So, we’re trying to book by daughter’s air travel to come home for Thanksgiving to get the best fare. Her school, Occidental, only has Wed - Friday off but I’m thinking most people will be leaving the Friday before. I know it’s sort of a gamble*

EK…my point…this student doesn’t know what is happening at HER college, or HER schedule, nor the expectations for that Monday and Tuesday from her instructors. Once she knows, she will better be able to make a decision.

My kids would have been reluctant to miss class.

The costs would not have played into our decision…not cheap even the weekend before thanksgiving!

My kid also earned an IB diploma with a 4.6 GPA from a “top 100 HS” and has never been home for Thanksgiving. It is too expensive and too close to finals. Oxy is not a school that draws largely from areas outside the west coast. I doubt most kids will be taking the week off to fly across the country. It may be OK to miss and may not be but it isn’t just safe to assume.

Our kids came home for Thanksgiving most years, but as they were closer than 200 miles, it generally didnt take longer than 5 or 6 hours.
Generally.
One year it took 17 hours. ( train was delayed) many snows in California mt passes
Both kids as freshmen, had work due either before or immediately after Thanksgiving so they only took the allowed days off, and even when they were home, they were studying.

Another thing to consider is missed classes prior to the Thanksgiving break. It seemed like D was always sick that first year of college, probably due to the exposure to all sorts of new germs and living in close quarters to everybody! She missed several classes in November, so taking extra time at Thanksgiving was not an option.

Thats a good point.
Close quarters, higher level of stress due to a new environment, which could also include different weather than they are used to.
Although, that won’t be as big of an issue in California.
