Okay, I am looking into flights for the Thanksgiving holiday, and things will be simpler and cheaper if d flies back on Monday (missing a few classes) rather than on Sunday.

Is this common? Is there the potential for serious repercussions if she cuts classes for a day?

It depends on the class. My D is a rising senior and in several of her classes they are allowed a total of 3 absences for the semester, excused or unexcused. In past years she has had to leave a day early or return a day later and had no problem after taking the time to talk to the professor. Being OOS does help because many understand that logistically and financially it’s a bit tougher to travel to and from CAE than those who are in-state.

She will know her options after the first day of classes for each class when the syllabus is passed out and class rules are explained.

One more thought; The Clemson/USC football game is a home game on the Saturday after Thanksgiving and many/most want to be there for the big rivalry game. You might find a less expensive fare if she is heading back Friday morning/evening rather than on Sunday if she is wanting to be at that game…just a thought.

fendrock,
Keep in mind that unless D is staying in one of the dorms that remains open over break (Roost, apts, etc.) the majority of dorms close at 10 AM on Wed. the 25th (and re-open on Friday the 27th at noon.)
This caught me off guard when my son was a freshman and thought he would go back a few days early over Christmas break to do some work on a project while the dorms were quiet—fortunately before he went back, we realized the dorms were closed!
The parents calendar that is linked on the parents page website lists the times the dorms open and close over various breaks.

Collegeboss seems to be posting in forums for Dartmouth, Stanford, Brown, Princeton, U. of California (several campuses), Harvard, Duke, Johns Hopkins, MIT, Cornell, and others with similar comments, and has been reported to the moderator.

My D just informed me that many teachers schedule exams that week as well so missing classes can be problematic. That said, the class syllabus should also have exam schedules.

I also wouldn’t book air travel until the student sees the syllabus…especially for a freshman
Keep in mind by that time your student may know people driving up to Charlotte for flights so you may have more options…also, there is a shuttle service (private, they advertise in the student newspaper) to the Charlotte airport.
Also, you may be able to fiddle around more with a prior to Thanksgiving Tuesday takeoff, many classes get cancelled, or there may be after classtime leeway to catch a later flight
we’ve had schedule success with a Tuesday-saturday night return schedule. Wasn’t much of a difference between returning sat night or staying home another night and leaving early on Sunday.

S has never had a problem with parking at Charlotte for holiday periods.Newer airports in newer areas are better planned than older ones in areas like yours and mine!.
JRWriter-
Its true professors may plan things for that Tuesday, but others def cancel their classes. Also, unless you have evening classes, theres time afterwards to make a later flight w/o cutting any classes.
