There's Pratt Institute, Clemson University, Savannah College of Art and Design, Winthrop University and College of Charleston. He's been accepted to all with majors varying from Visual Arts, Graphic Design, Fine Arts etc. Any advice to which might be best. I know this is all opinionated and it all depends on the individual, but as a mom I just need some suggestions.

Have you visited any of these? Which feels right? Are there financial considerations?

Apart from other considerations, what happens if you want to change majors part way through college? Will you be able to do it without transferring to a new school?

Personally (and take this with a grain of salt, because neither of my kids were Arts majors), I would choose Clemson or CofC for the variety of well-rounded college experiences the kid would get. But I know most of those on this forum would disagree with me. SCAD and Pratt are very prestigious, but… but…

Clemson: $25K; CofC: $21K; Winthrop: even less; SCAD: $42K; Pratt: $52K (doesn’t that make a difference?)

But, I think for a serious student that working in NYC would be the place to be!

I see your dilemma.

I think it really depends on how committed he is to pursuing arts. If he’s wavering and has interests in other fields, I would definitely pick a comprehensive university in case the whole art thing doesn’t work out. However, if he’s dead set on the arts and art is his life, I would splurge for Pratt or SCAD.

It’s quite a different environment to study art at a comprehensive uni/liberal arts school vs at an art school. At an art school, since everyone committed to studying primarily the arts, there’s generally a higher level of quality and drive when it comes to art-making. It’s a lot harder to be the ‘best’ and I think if he’s dead set on a career in the arts, it’s a better place to push yourself and be pushed.
