okay, ANOTHER NEED OF ADVICE FOR THIS OVER REACTING GIRL (ME), w/ dilemma of price

So, some of you may remember me with the "university of oregon" and if i'd be able to get in.

Well, i was pretty confident with my grades and pretty darn sure that i'd be attending there, when I discovered the costly out-of-state tuition, which my mom (single mom) will DEFINITELY not be able to pay.

I know that there is financial aid, yet even with that, I'm not so sure if it would be enough for my mom to pay the tuition (my bro. goes to community college).

So my question is :

i want to attend a university with a GREAT JOURNALISM/COMMUNICATIONS department, tuition for out of state students not AS costly and a bit manageable, plus i want it to be a university where i would have a great chance of getting in (U of O = easy admin. but great program in journalism/comm).

Oh yeah, and I live in cali.... but i do NOT want to attend university here. I want to attend a university out of state, yet let the price be manageable.

I REALLY wanted to go to U of O since it had a GREAT reputation for its journalism/comm..

but... I'm open to other ideas.

OH.

And here are my stats that i posted previously:

Freshman:

Bio Honors: B-/A-
Geometry Honors: B-/B+ (89.7% ugh)
French 2: A-/A-
Geography Honors: B+/A-
English 1 Honors : A/A
P.E/Comp sci (1 sem each) : A/A

Sophomore:

French 2 A-/A-
Algebra II Honors B-/B+
P.E (last year, finally!) B+/A (stupid football coach as p.e teacher)
AP World History B-/A- (only AP that sophomores are are allowed to take)
Chemistry Honors: B+/B+
English 2 Honors A/A

Junior year (this year, i screwed up)

Only grades for first sem. (possible grades)

English 3 Honors B+
Pre-Cal Honors - C+ (aweihfja;ksj i screwed up bad ugh)
French 3 - A-
AP U.S History - B
AP Biology - B
exploratory Art - A+ (for one year visual arts)

SAT: N/A

I'm taking the SATs on march.

ps: no matter what university/college i attend, i will definitely utilize financial aid.
the problem is, i would like the tuition to be manageable (U of O's out-of-state student tuition was around $26,000 including housing, while instates was a mere $6,000!)

anyone??

bump

The sad reality is that most kids can’t attend a college of their dreams. State schools generally don’t give much aid to OOS students, and unless you’re a top student that can get into the few private schools with great aid, your own state schools may just be your only choices.

You need to look for schools that meet 100% of need but they are few and far between. You may qualify for merit aid at some colleges, but until you have SAT scores it’s hard to say.

i’m actually a junior, not a senior.

People say that i have a lot of time, but I really don’t…

Thank you though. :)

Why don’t you apply to cali schools that are farther from where you live?

UCDavis has a good communications dpt, as well as Irvine, Santa Barbara, and the brand new yet underrated Merced.

You realize you are very fortuntate to live in the state with the most extensive and highest quality public school system in the country. You may “not want” to go to school in Cali…but really, you must look inside yourself and understand that statement…because you would be walking away from the obvious answer.

I’m from California too, so I’d like to suggest the WUE program: [WICHE - Student Exchange Programs](http://wue.wiche.edu/)

I -think- U of Oregon is on there. Basically you can get certain public schools in the west for 150% of their instate tuition instead of the out-of-state tuition. Good luck. :)

OOS tuition is generally very high. At the best public universities, it can be as expensive or almost as expensive as private universities. And as hmom5 points out, public universities usually don’t provide much financial aid for OOS students. As a result, it can actually be cheaper to go to a private university because your chances of getting financial aid are increased.

Some universities are more affordable than others for OOS students. Notably, the University of Minnesota at Twin Cities and any of the State University of New York campuses have relatively affordable OOS tuition. Minnesota and some of the SUNY campuses are generally considered to be in the top 100. Any of these will cost approximately $15K per year for tuition and fees (this is after SUNY’s recent tuition increase is fully implemented.)

One could also study in Canada. It’s often significantly cheaper to be an international student in Canada than to be an OOS student in the US. McGill, the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia are considered some of the best universities in Canada.

For a California resident, any of the options outlined above will cost thousands of dollars more per year than in-state fees at the UC’s. They may or may not be worth the extra money. Some states don’t have any strong public universities. Other states invest all of their resources in the “flagship” public university. If the flagship isn’t a good fit for a given student, that student is simply out of luck. But a California resident has multiple good options. Why throw that all away? There may be a reason, but think carefully first.

Ummm…journalism…not exactly a good choice. Newspapers are all dying. All print media is dying. Communications is fine…television. Or PR work.

That industry is less about prestige and more about hard work. Talk to people in local television near you and seek THEIR advice. I bet they say, STAY INSTATE and save your money. If you want a graduate degree THEN spend the money to seek prestige or OOS school.

The other option is applying for financial aid is a snap, CSS and FAFSA and send it in online. The schools know what to do and how much you need and you may be surprised. So go ahead and APPLY to Oregon next year and APPLY for financial aid and then COMPARE the cost with the cal schools you get into.

^News stories are still needed, just not on paper. Instead of writing stories for the paper, you’d probably be writing them for the website.

Check out Ohio University. I don’t really have time to look into tuition and everything, but I know it has a reputable journalism program and is relatively easy to get into.
