Oklahoma National Merit scholarship

Thinking about it further, it is possible that the OOS tuition waiver would cover the $365.10 OOS tuition portion for additional credit hours above 15 in a semester, but not any of the rest of it.

gahehhehzhute: Have you taken more than 15 hours in a semester? If so did the scholarship cover the tuition for those additional hours?

STEMFamily: I took 17 hours one semester and had no problem with the tuition waiver covering all of my tuition expenses. Then again, I qualify for in-state tuition, so I can’t speak for those using the OOS waivers.

atomom: I don’t really have a problem with football. I’m actually a pretty big sports fan. Plus Oklahoma isn’t exactly the most exciting place to begin with, so I can’t imagine how boring life would be without the Sooners or the Thunder. I just prefer a place with a better sports/academic balance, like Stanford, Duke, UT, Virginia, Michigan, etc. But that’s my own personal preference.

LOL–sorry about the math errors. (Seemed too simple to be true. . .I was an English major.)
If the bottom-line after all the additional charges/fees is pushing 9-10K per year at OU, NMF’s might want to try for the Presidential Scholarship at U. Tulsa.
Even if you don’t get it, (about 30% of applicants get a full ride) you’ll likely be offered full-tuition–which will leave only room/board–about the same actual cost as OU. And they do have football at TU.

gah–thanks for the info and sharing your personal experience.

atomom: I think it is more indicative of the complexity of the OU scholarship than your math skills  This has certainly been a flag to our family to read offers very carefully.

As someone who visited the National Merit office and is an incoming freshman at OU next semester, the advisers there told me that I could expect to pay about $7000 out of pocket with no other scholarships. They also told me that additional scholarships are very easy to find, especially once you’re placed into your major department.

My only hope is that taking two majors won’t increase costs too excessively.

Just remember to take everything that the recruiters say with a grain of salt. They’re nice people and aren’t trying to straight up lie to you, but stretching the truth to bump their NMS numbers isn’t out of the question for them (or many other recruiters, for that matter).

I wouldn’t say additional scholarships are “very easy” to find, although it does depend a great deal on your majors/departments. I was able to cover all of my additional fees and a large part of my housing through non-university scholarships. Department and major-specific scholarships were a bit harder to come by, though my department doesn’t exactly have a lot of money to throw around. In three years, I’ve been able to earn about $1500 in departmental scholarships. My significant other, who is in a much larger department and is much more involved on campus than I am, has collected around $3000-$4000 in departmental/university scholarships. Keep in mind that we both have very high GPAs and strong relationships with our professors (neither of which are particularly difficult to achieve at OU).

Business and Engineering seem to award the most scholarships. I’m not too familiar with Journalism, Meteorology, Architecture, etc. If you’re a decent student (shouldn’t be a problem for most NMS), you will earn new scholarships. But don’t depend on them to cover all of your additional costs.

OU has a really good package in my opinion. They give $2,750.00/semester for four year. If you’re out of state they also wave 100% of your nonresident tuition which can be pretty expensive plus $2,000.00 a year to help with the left over resident tuition. They’ll also make sure you’re getting at least $5,000 more either through the national or college awards. They also give you a check, I think for a laptop and help with studying abroad too.

From what I understand, the OU scholarship can be used toward graduate programs if you finish early. They do provide semifinalists and finalists with a hotel, not sure about others. And I was also told that at times they have football tickets available.
