I just graduated high school this year and will be attending oklahoma university in the fall for petroleum engineering. I graduated with a 4.08 gpa and lots of ap credit. I know petroleum engineering is a very competitive field especially for internships during college and the low gas prices recently, but im ready to work my butt off in college cause i am very passionate about my major. I was just wondering if it is still likely that if i keep up my grades in college if there is still a chance i could get an internship and job out of college. I also plan to apply for the accelerated MBA program my junior year. Any advice or comments help thanks!
How likely it is that you keep your grades up depends completely on you. The first year of the petroleum engineering curriculum isn’t too bad compared to the rest. If you want to get one of the competitive internships, make it your first priority to get a 4.0 your freshman year. That’s extremely important and will pay dividends in the long term. I’d also try and join at least one engineering “team” on campus. This shows that you can work in a team environment on an engineering project and have social skills. There are engineering projects that build different kinds of cars, develop new materials, etc. Find one that interests you and really get involved in it. This can also give you friends in and around your major who can give you advice on internships, classes, and professors.
