Is it worth attending Ole Miss for engineering while being part of the honors college, or would it be better to attend a school elsewhere for engineering? I have the stats to get into much better schools, such as Virginia Tech or NC State, but the honors college idea really appeals to me. However, I have not heard great things about UM's engineering. If anyone knows anything about their engineering programs, especially mechanical engineering, please share your thoughts.

I don’t know anything about their engineering programs, so I probably won’t be of much help. My son will be a freshman at the honors college this fall. We just visited the campus 2 weeks ago (from the west coast), and we were very impressed with the honors college.
When we visited, we learned about a new program that will be available this fall, if I’m not mistaken. It is called the Center for Manufacturing Excellence, and if you have any interest in manufacturing engineering, you may want to check it out. (I know you said that you are interested in mechanical engineering, but I just thought I would mention it.)
I hope you get some input from others who have knowledge about the engineering programs at Ole Miss. Good luck with your college search!

cod4pro, Is it worth attending Ole Miss for engineering? The short answer is yes. But in truth it really depends on you and what you are looking to get out of the years you spend in college. I am will be graduating with a BS in Mechanical Engineering from ole miss in 2 weeks, I am a member of the honors college, and I think I was in a very similar situation to you when I came here (had scholarships to several more well known engineering schools) so I think I might have some insights for you. Shoot me and email and I can go into more detail for you. jfish1288@yahoo.com

Mississippi State has a much better Engineering Program.

The new Center for Manufacturing Excellence (CME) program really sounds good. I hope we hear about how the first year of the program is going.

Agreed. I have alot of friends and relatives in engineering, all went to MSU.

I hope you’ll check out these stories about Engineering students at Ole Miss. Some of these students are also in the Honors College. The Center for Manufacturing Excellence is a great new addition allowing students to study engineering in conjunction with business, accounting and public policy.
