Olin - Developing tomorow's innovators

C. M. Rubin: The Global Search for Education: Is Your Child an Innovator? Check out the article in today's Huffington Post

So wrapped up in decision day drama yesterday that I missed this. Great stuff!!

http://www.bostonglobe.com/business/2012/03/30/2OfU6jmGSC7AOZrlSShDZM/story.html</a>

Also the Boston Globe today has a video posted of SCOPE projects for Olin.

Thanks–finally got the link to work. Love that stair climbing robot!

SCOPE looks like a great program. If I were an employer, that’s the kind of experience that would be really meaningful.

I agree that the SCOPE program really helps Olin students when applying for jobs, they can speak about their ‘real world’ experience.

Tony Wagner’s new book, Educating Innovators, comes out April 12th, I believe. My sister-in-law heard him speak a couple of days ago, and talked to him afterwards about the fact that her niece was admitted to Olin. He proceeded to gush, and said that he’s got 20 pages of his new book devoted to Olin. He also said something to the effect of “No one’s heard of them. There’s no way of saying this without sounding egotistical, but after my book comes out, they will.”

I was wrong about the 12th. The book comes out the 17th.

I actually had not heard of Tony Wagner (had to google him). Neat stuff.

Will I have to stop saying that my son goes to “the best little school you’ve never heard of” ?

Neither had I heard of him…but I’m looking forward to reading the book now. Great story, rayrick!

Check out Brett Rowley’s post in the Olinsider at [This Is Gonna Be a Fun One - The OLINsider](<a href=“Blogs | Olin College of Engineering”>Blogs | Olin College of Engineering) . He talks about one of his favorite ECs working with Tony Wagner. Purpose - better telling the Olin story so people understand. While you are there, read Brett’s other posts. He is my favorite example of an Olin student.

Tony Wagner’s book should be waiting for me when I get home today. I’ll let you know how it is.

So, I got my book and I just read the Olin passage (23 pages!). It’s very persuasive stuff. It’s late and I don’t have the energy for a proper synopsis–maybe tomorrow. For now, suffice it to say that even for someone who’s been exposed to as much Olin info as myself, it was quite informative. I’m more sold than ever on the merits of Olin’s approach (and that takes some doing at this point!). I hope it gets a wide readership, and if it does, it should be a very nice boost to Olin’s reputation.

Guess I need to purchase it. Thanks for the info.

That sounds very positive indeed. I’m looking forward to reading it, but we’re getting a gift of the book from someone, and I have to wait for that :(

Tony Wagner’s got a 15-minute TED-like talk on the web now about his new book. Olin gets a brief mention:

I enjoyed Tony Wagner’s talk, thank you for sharing that!

I think I saw him at Olin’s Expo on Monday, and I asked someone who said that they had heard he would be there. Pretty cool!
