This is a perfect example of what is wrong with american math education. This is a very basic math problem, requiring only a little bit of abstract thought to arrive at a solution. However, rather than do this, the OP wonders if there is a formula for it. Why do our schools teach kids to know formulas rather than to solve problems? No wonder so many Americans hate math so much.

I realize this thread is very likely a joke. But the fact remains that, whether in jest or not, it demonstrates a very serious problem...

lol thats not a problem that requires thinking, its just a sequence problem. if u look in an algebra book, u'll see theres a formula. and PLEASE dont ANYONE quote me and ask me "show me where the formula is," this problem, if u know the formula, it'll take u 5 seconds to do, if u dont, might as well guess. btw, i dont knwo the forumla i just know there is one cause i learned it but forgot it.

Do 5 * 100 - 3. Then you get 497. its 5 more and u already have the 1st one (3). So u dont include 1 out of 101. So its 100. Now, its 5 more every time. SO times 5. THen finally you add negative 3 to it. this give u 497. do u Follow me man?
