On Campus Jobs

I'm an incoming freshman, and I really need to get an on-campus job to help pay my way to Rice. (No work study though, just me).

I've found the job listing site online that you log into with your net id and everything, but I'm just wondering if anyone has insight into when to apply. Are the jobs listed right now for summer positions, or just in advance for jobs starting in fall? Will more be posted later during the summer?

Thanks for any advice you can give :)

Lifeguarding at rec center? My S has done that for over a year. One idea for you and good luck.

I recently went up to Rice for a visit and got some coffee from a student-run coffee shop in the same building as the bookstore. They said they will be needing workers in the fall. They were very cool and whipped up a custom-made “healthy” latte for me. :)

My DD did not have workstudy, and worked several great jobs on-campus. I think the non work-study work is called “Riceworks” or, at least, it used to be. There were tons of Rice job opportunities even for non-workstudy students, and also lots geared toward Rice students and listed on the website, such as tutoring high school kids privately etc. You can probably wait until you are on campus to check it out… but look into it early on when you get to campus.

Riceworks is the website to search for full-time employment at Rice, not student jobs. You can find the student jobs board at this link [Rice University](http://jobs.financialaid.rice.edu/index.cfm)
You will need your Rice NetID to log on to it, though. It’s called the Financial Aid Job Board, but not all of the posted jobs are work-study. Actually, most of the ones posted right now are not work-study positions.

The Hoot (late night “restaurant”) is opening another branch! Only 2-4 hours a week though, but it helps

If you like sports, look into being a ref for the IM. My son started his freshman year. Good source of income. Plus if you like writing, you can write for the Thresher. You won’t get rich writing an article a week, but its a little spending money and a great experience.

I worked for the Housing department while I was at Rice. Rice Athletics has a lot of positions open as well.

Here’s my coffeehouse plug - we take applications at the beginning of each semester and we’ll definitely be hiring this fall due to the expansion. Minimum 6 hrs/week.

Also, there are a ton of jobs on campus that won’t necessarily be listed on the job board. Just talk to people - upperclassmen or ask an office if they need student help. Here are some good options off the top of my head: student-run businesses (Willy’s Pub/Coffeehouse/The Hoot), the Thresher, Fondren Library, Rec Center/IM sports, Rice Gallery. Don’t forget to think about what hours you’ll be able to work though - during the day/at night, weekdays/weekends.

How exactly do you apply to write for the Thresher? Do you simply express an interest during O-Week?

they have a booth at the club fair. Just go there and sign up

Oh, ok, thanks!

Keep checking the posted student jobs regularly. D was initially told that the next semester’s jobs wouldn’t be up until later in the summer, but she applied in early July for one that sounded right for her and was hired sight unseen as an incoming freshman after applying and then sending the requested resume. She needed to know she would have the income, so this worked well for her. And she worked there all four years, but many people try several on campus jobs during their time at Rice.
