On Campus Jobs

Is it too early to apply for on campus jobs?
I haven't had AOP yet so I don't know my schedule...
Is it hard to get a job?

Are you willing to work any job on campus? There’s always positions open in the cafeterias. I’m working as a receptionist in my hall this fall. Training starts on the 15th of August. Can’t wait to make the trip back!

Do you have work-study? If so, you can work at AmericaReads/AmericaCounts. It pays better than the caf and you get to work with kids (which I personally like but obviously it’s not for everyone lol).

I am willing to work any job, but preferably anything not in the caf, anything else is fine though. What about cashiering?
And I don’t think that I can do work-study because I’m international and it has something to do with FAFSA…

^Oh right I totally forgot that you were international. Sorry! :).

The caf isn’t a bad job at all. If you like night jobs, night receptionist is nice because you just do your hw the whole time. You can apply to work at any of the bookstores or Sparty’s on campus. Just try to apply as soon as you get to campus because jobs tend to fill up fast (especially in this economy).

Sorry for my ignorance, but do you need to get special permission to work in the US? Or is that part of your student visa?

No problem
I can work on campus without permission, but not for many hours as citizens. Working off campus is permitted on my visa, but there’s so many stipulations before I can do it that its ridiculous. First I have to find a job, get a job offer letter, take the letter to get an SSN, show all of this to immigration, then wait it out.

And thanks a lot, would not knowing my class schedule when I get on campus be a hinderance? My International orientation starts on the 23rd but my AOP isn’t until the 29th.

I doubt it. You should be fine. The international people will probably help you set up a job if you ask them. They’re trained for this kind of thing lol.

go to myspartancareer.com and search under keyword query “MSU.” That will pop up most of the on-campus jobs available. Others, such as the receptionists, cafeteria, and facilities jobs have applications either online or in the front desks of residence halls. I found my jobs in my college postings that the career guide sends, but there are all sorts of resources you can look through to find jobs. I’d start applying in early August, that is when a lot of job postings for the fall go up. Then when you first go to campus, ask around every single place on grand river if they are hiring, many of them will give you their apps right then and there (and some might tell you to come back at a certain time). I know bookstores especially need people for the book-buying rush (if you are able to go early to campus, the better chance you have to get a job).
