on community college transfer

I heard of this and I just wanted to clarify... If i went to a community college instead of a four-year college/university, would it diminish my chances of transferring into Columbia? would the admission officers immediately rank me as a lesser candidate?

I don't know if it will necessarily mark you as a lesser candidate but it will be tougher due the fact that there is a smaller allocation (number) of open slots for transfers of which (and i am not 100% sure on this) transfers could also include those at four year colleges transferring due to work or whatever. in the end, the allocation for transfers is only a fraction (maybe 10%) of the total acceptances for any given term.

shoot.. so transfer from anywhere at all will be tough

i don't know if it is necessarily tougher per se. i have meet alot of transfer students here. it is just a different ballgame. 1) there is only so many spots to begin with (which you could say there is only so many spots for undergrads out of high school to begin with as well) 2) different requirements (since you will be judge by your community college transcripts as well plus receiving credit in the transfer.

as i said before it is not a question of being viewed as a lesser candidate but rather a competitive candidate in a competitive pool of applicants.

definitely apply. give it a shot. definitely don't expect to get in if you are taking average classes and average loads unless you have something extremely unique going on like running a business or something. push yourself and i am sure admissions will see your value. Columbia is one hell of a competitive place let me tell - but in a good way.
