On-Line Biology

D needs to take Bio as a Gen Ed and considering taking it over the summer as an on-line course. Do any of your kids have any experience with on-line courses and bio. in particular as an on-line class

My daughter took online chemistry through Johns Hopkins’ CTY program. We felt it was very poorly taught and definitely not worth the steep price tag. BYU has much more reasonably priced online courses that are accepted by the UC system. If we were looking now, that’s where we would go first.

If the gen ed requires a lab science, check on how the lab component requirement would be met with the online course. It’s a consideration. If bio doesn’t work,is there another gen ed she could fulfill instead?

She has to take a Gen Ed with a lab component and while there are many that fit because she also is going for an Education certification it has to be Bio.

Her school offers Bio101 in the summer and she can take it on-line. She has not taken anything on-line but does not want to live at school again this summer. I will have her ask but I think the on-line Bio 101 counts the same way as the regular Bio 101.
It appears to me that Bio 101 is for non science majors to meet the Gen Ed requirements. They offer a Bio 110 which she could also use but that appears to be for students that are majoring in the sciences.

The education certification in NJ requires specifically bio? Is that right? Wow, I wonder why they want bio over chem, or physics, if that is the situation.

Still not sure how the lab component will be met with an on-line class??

northeastmom- they require a category called Physiology & Hygiene there are 5 Biology courses and 2 Psychology courses that fill this requirement but of the seven courses you can select only 2 (Bio 101 or 110) satisfy the Gen Ed. D needs to choose courses with a purpose since she has certain goals that she can meet with proper planning.
Yes Dad is helping by pointing out the various alternatives she has available. See Dad is writing the checks and is trying not to write one for an extra semester or cause her to take out a loan to pay for that semester due to a planning problem.

spring -I think I read that you need to buy a lab kit for the on-line course. I will have my D contact the professor that teaches the on-line course for details. She has time before she decides what to do.

I take it online currently with the FLVS (Florida Virtual School) and it is actually going quite well. Let me know if you have any questions about general online things -I’m assuming you live in NJ.

tom, I see. So the bio 101 or 110 are the 2 that meet both requirements for certification as well as a required gen ed for your D at her school. Is this correct?

Pruneface, glad it’s working out.

Yes nemom that is correct

I see. Taking it online this summer and living at home makes a lot of sense to me. I hope she can manage this because it is a big cost saver to live at home.

I’m assuming that the Bio 101 is a college-level course whose requirements would not be fulfilled by taking a CTY of other high school level course. This means that the OP should look into college distance courses.
