On or off campus housing for grad students?

Can someone highlight the pros and cons of both kinds?
Also, where can I find roommates? I tried Uroomsurf but couldn't find any grad students there or anyone who is interested in sharing an apartment.

Someone answer please…

I don’t think too many people here are that familiar with the grad student world, hence the lack of response. The general culture at Michigan is for upper classers to live off campus. The large majority of juniors and seniors do not live in University housing, so I would imagine that holds even more true for grad students. There is some housing that is geared towards grad students I think, like Northwoods apartments, but I don’t know much about it. You should call the housing office and see if someone there can help you to know what is available.

Most grad students live off-campus. There is university housing available for graduate students (Northwood Apartments) but it’s very expensive. You can find cheaper housing in apartments dotted around Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. As a graduate student, I live off-campus because I did not want to be near the undergraduate scene. My neighborhood is safe, quiet, and convenient to stores.

It’s also awful. I’m an undergrad, but I live there right now for various reasons. I would never bother with Northwood if I had a choice. The only real benefit is how close it is to North Campus engineering buildings.

There’s a huge amount of housing out there off-campus; the majority of UM students do live off-campus. Keep on searching.

Beta’s house is a sweet location (they were kicked off campus so they rent their house to grad students now). 2 minute walk from the union.

I agree this is a good looking house. I wonder how much rooms there go for.

How far is it from the engineering buildings and would I have to go through the university to rent a room here? Would it be better than renting an apartment off campus?

AcidBurn, I’m not sure what you are looking for in housing. If cost is a concern, I would advise looking for off-campus apartments and staying away from campus housing.

Cost, safety, and quality were my metrics. I live further away from campus/downtown and my rent is less than $800/month (even less with a roommate). The extra benefit of my location is that I do not get stuck in football traffic. My rent would be higher if I had lived closer to campus (unless you manage to get multiple roommates to lower costs per person). I have access to public transportation that takes me (and other graduate students in my neighborhood) directly to campus.

Cost is definitely a concern, but I wouldn’t want to stay too far away from campus either. ‘Staying away from the undergraduate scene’ isn’t a priority for me…in fact I wouldn’t mind being a part of it. I’m an international student, so this is going to be the first real ‘college-like’ experience for me…So, although safety is a concern…peace and quiet isn’t so high up on the list.

Check that – the IFC just voted to let Beta back on campus. They’re moving back into their house in the fall.
