On the verge of breaking down, PLS HELP!!!!!matter of life and death.

Dear all,

I am currently situated in a very chaotic situation and I need some adivce and words of wisdom from you guys who have shown willingness to help others.

I was
born in Maryland but my family moved back to HK when I
was three. I then went to school in HK all the way
until form five. I studied in Belilios Public School
where I got to meet your other cousin, Mrs. Kung. Mrs.
Kung is my English teacher. After she left BPS, we
still keep in contact through emails. I went back to
Maryland after the HKCEE (Hong Kong public examination). My parents wanted me to go
to high school, however, the school placed me in
junior 11th. ( I should be in 12th). We all thought
that by getting good grades in high school, I would be
able to get into a university that I want to go to.
Yet, reality is not the same. Since I came to high
school in the middle of the 4 years, my GPA has to be
derived from both in HK and my junior year. Though I
worked hard to get straight A in school, my GPA didn’t
raise up a lot as HK has a different grading system
than in here. Provided that my SAT score (1300 for the old one and 1800 for the new one)isn’t as high
as the more competitive kids in my school, I started
to realize that my dream in getting to a UC school are
shattering. Applying as an out of state applicant is
even harder. I am afraid that I wont be able to get
into any of the more renowned universities that I want
to go to even if I stay in high school for another
year. This is why I planned to come to study in a
community college in CA then transfer to a UC school.

Should I stick with high school and get into University of Maryland, college park?

Is graduating from a better school, say like UCLA over UMCP do me good in terms of applying to a grad school even if i transfer from a community college?

and since my parents are not in CA, do anyone of you know people who are also from out of state and pay in state tuition after transfer to UC by proving being financially independent?

my stats:

unweighted gpa 3.6
weighted 3.8 (hk doesnt have honors classes)
SAT old one: 1300 new one 1800
SAT 2. math2c: 650 biology: 690
AP bio: 5
junior year's gpa: 4.0

I would appreciate if you guys can help me out a bit. I really want to get into a good university, but i am not sure if i am making the right decision.

PS: would studying in a cc for the first two years make me less appealing or competitive when applying for grad school?

THANK YOU VERY MUCH. may god bless u all.

I hate it when people lie just to get responses. This is a matter of life and death? Either you are trying to get some attention, or you actually need some serious help.

I don't think college is a matter of life and death... I think you may have a shot at the lower UCs. The only think holding you back a bit are your SAT IIs which you may want to retake.... Write a decent essay, and tell them what your telling us...

i am not trying to lie or anything. to me, it's a matter of life and death. a man without a dream has no life at all.

Don't joke, this sounds serious. If you really believe this is life and death you need to immediately seek help from a professional.

Pls, i beg you guys, i need real constructive advice. thanks a lot.

Why do you guys have to be so criticizing to the poor guy? To him, this matter is serious and if you are not gonna try to help him, just don't even post. People have different values in real life, and if this guy had been dreaming to go to one of UC's schools all of his life, the fact that he may not be able to can strike him pretty hard.

K, dreamweaver, I think this is what you should do right now. Study hard for the SAT's again, and try to raise the SAT I score to 2200+ and SAT II scores to 700+. Since you seem so determined to go to one of the UC's, I think you can pull that off. (besides, math should be pretty easy for you cuz u r from hong kong, shouldn't it?)

If by any chance you don't make it to a UC tho, I don't think spending a year in a near community college is such a good idea. There are plenty of other decent colleges that you can attend. Your future is shaped by how assiduously you study in college, no matter what college you go to.

However, though, I want you ask you something. Why do you want to go to a UC? Right now, I get the feeling that you only want to go because of their prestige, not because you have a definite goal that you want to achieve in your life. You are the carver of your future. The college isn't. As I've said above, if you have strong determination and put your best effort into it, your future will be successful.

So, like I said, just try to raise your SAT scores and put your best effort into the remaining time at high school. If you achieve your goal, phenomenal, if you don't, it's not such a big deal.

I know my advice wasn't so constructive or useful in terms of information, but I just wanted to provide you with a more positive answer than the above worthless censure.

Good luck.

Pls forgive me for trying to capture attention from you guys, but i am really desperate to seek advice from you all. Pls do help me out. This means a LOT to me. thank you very much.

Thanks coolness_rookie. I really appreicate your help.

I am not really blindfolded by the reputation of the UC schools. Getting into a UC school has been one of my sincere dream since I was small. I like it better in the UC schools than UM here mainly becoz of the renowned and outstanding research program offered in UC and their stellar programs in biology.

Actually i have been working my butt off to raise my SAT score, but since i was mainly raised in hk where english is only like a foreign or second language, it's really hard for me to improve my reading and vocab power over such a short period of time.

since i have already got my high school diploma in HK, this is why i dont want to waste another year in high school and seeing that no matter how hard i try, i may not be able to get into the better uni i wanted to go. due to my unique situation, i dont want those admission ppl determine where i end up at, I want to pave the road to my dream school myself.

This is my story. my pathetic one.

umm, believe me, th ere is nothing that great about the UCs. they actually kind of suck. no, i mean they're great schools and all, but they aren't all that.

if you're that obsessed about UC< just apply. if you dont get in, well ok, go to CC and then transfer. geez.

If a UC is your dream, 2 years at a community college and then transfering is a good strategy although you may be able to get into one of the lower ranked UCs now. However, do expect to have to pay oos tuition. Many try to avoid that and few succeed.

It doesn't matter what college you go to, but what you make of it...

Preparing for SAT 2's might be a better use of your time than preparing for the SAT. If you can get several scores of 770 or higher, that might offset the low SAT score. And I couldn't agree with you more that a man without a dream has no life at all.

You should try to get into the best school that you can. As long as you are from a top 50 college, you should be able to get into a good grad school if you get A's undergrad.

To pay for college, you should look into scholarships. Your guidance office should have info on local ones, which are easier to get than national ones.
