once again, the system assumes cordial relationships with the non-custodial parent

I can't at all recall how I dealt with this last year (I can't access my past financial aid applications), but my sister is having trouble with FAFSA's requirement for my father's social security number. The thing is ... we're not in contact with him and we can't remember it. Additionally, my sister has won merit scholarships to a specific school but they recently sent her a letter to fill out this "missing information". Any pointers?

Pull up last year's FAFSA on the web - you'll find his SSN on that.

P.S. Why does you sister need the SSN for the non custodial parent for FAFSA?? FAFSA only requires custodial parent info. Leave the SSN blank for father if his financial info isn't used.

Also - why does a scholarship need his SSN? I don't think I'd want to give that.

FAFSA is complaining for some reason, and so is her school.

Also, I have no idea how to pull up last year's FAFSA.

Did you provide any other info for dad? Is it mom's info you are using to fill out financial info? Did she say she's married? Sorry for the questions - I'm just trying to figure out why you'd be asked for non-custodial info on FAFSA.

To get to last year's FAFSA, go to the FAFSA homepage (FAFSA.ed.gov). If you remember the password you used last year, you can open a saved FAFSA (middle box). If you don't, though, there is a way around it - go to the right-hand box & choose correct a FAFSA. You will be able to make up a new password (you won't need the old one) - and you can just exit without submitting any changes.

That's funny -- my father's SSN isn't on there.

I think my sister should have listed my father as an NCP -- that's what I assume, and I'll double-check, but it seems that both the school and FAFSA for some reason is sending a "missing information" letter asking for my father's SSN.

Your sister must have made some mistake in filling out the FAFSA. A couple ideas: 1) she listed your parents as married; 2) she gave some info on your dad - financial or otherwise - somewhere on the FAFSA that prompted them to automatically assume his info is needed. The FAFSA does NOT require NCP info - that is why I assume your sister made some small mistake that is now a headache. Ask her if you can look at her FAFSA & compare it to yours. I bet you'll find the mistake. If she corrects it, the problem should go away. Good luck.
