I am a geology major at a top university and will be applying to grad school later this year. I'm really worried about a C- that I have on my transcript from a freshman year calculus class. How much will this affect my application?
My overall GPA is 3.5 right now.

It won’t hurt that much if its freshman year, I took two courses pass fail my senior year and still got accepted into one of the top universities in the world.

I got a C+ in Physical Chemistry for the Life Sciences last spring. It was a fluke. I had never gotten less than a B in any college class and all As in all my mathematics courses. I simply got a 20 point question and 10 point question completely wrong on the midterm because I didn’t think we would have to memorize any of the underived formulas that we didn’t use on homework assignments (a stupid assumption of my part, it turns out). I’ve still received invites at 3 of 4 schools (all top schools). So don’t sweat it.

Don’t sweat it for a millisecond.

Thanks everyone; I was fretting about this for a while. Apart from this the lowest grade I’ve received is a B, so that’s really good to know.

I got a C+ in a class IN MY MAJOR and I still got accepted to Princeton for grad school. I wouldn’t sweat it if the rest of your grades are good (which it looks like they are) and you’ve got solid recommendations/experience.
