One field of interest ok for top schools?

Hi everyone… as I’ve been looking at the different ECs of students on cc, I’m beginning to question my one field of interest- writing. My school has no clubs or open leadership positions or anything… but that’s not my excuse. The thing is- I’ve gone really far with my essays, creative writing and poetry (won international prizes and publications), but I play no varsity sport, and I don’t play in a band or any other activity. I’ve been playing piano for over ten years, but those qualifications are pretty limited, and nothing that really sets me apart.

So- should I maybe start something new, or will colleges appreciate the fact that I’ve done one thing and taken it far?

Colleges would much rather you have one or two ECs that you show amazing interest and leadership in than a laundry list of ECs that are just there to pad an application.

This is the problem with lurking on cc.

Absolutely agree with @THRUSSIANBADGER . Admissions love to see a couple really strong ECs. Being recognized on a national level is huge too. Continue writing, do some volunteering, and I think you’ll have a solid application.

Chance me?

If you want to get into , you have to drop everything you love and become a one person EC machine. If you don’t then you have no chance. Sorry.

8-| Just do what you want. Most people on college confidential don’t get into elite schools, why should you do what they’re doing?

Being recognized Internationally for your writing is truly fantastic! That and Piano,[ and great grades and test scores] will be enough!
Colleges are just fine with students who are outstanding in one very strong EC, and who are strong overall academically. Relax.

Agree with menloparkmom. Writing and piano with a great academic record are all you need. Don’t bother chasing ‘volunteer work’ or ‘leadership roles’ or other ECs that say nothing important about you. They just distract from the clarity, accomplishment and dedication you have shown to what you really care about.
